Overview

The MC14541B is a programmable timer device, designed for various timing applications. It integrates a 16-stage binary counter, an oscillator that can be configured with external RC components, an automatic power-on reset circuit, and output control logic.

Function Description:

The device's primary function is to provide programmable timing intervals. Upon power-on, an internal reset circuit initializes the counter. An external reset pulse can also be applied to re-initialize the counter. The integrated oscillator, when used with external resistors (Rtc, Rs) and a capacitor (Ctc), generates a clock frequency (fosc). This frequency is then divided by the 16-stage binary counter. The output frequency is fosc/2^n, where 'n' is the selected counter stage.

The MC14541B can operate as either a 2^n frequency divider or a single transition timer. In frequency divider mode, the selected count is continuously transmitted to the output. In single transition timer mode, after a reset, the counter counts up to 2^n-1, causing the output to change state. It then remains in that state until another reset or a change in the mode pin level.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Supply Voltage Range (VDD):
    • 3.0 Vdc to 18 Vdc with Auto Reset Disabled (Pin 5 = VDD)
    • 8.5 Vdc to 18 Vdc with Auto Reset Enabled (Pin 5 = Vss)
  • Output Selections: Provides outputs at 2^8, 2^10, 2^13, or 2^16 stages of the counter.
  • Oscillator Accuracy: Built-in low power RC oscillator offers ±2% accuracy over temperature range, ±20% over supply, and ±3% over processing at < 10 kHz.
  • Input/Output Current (DC or Transient):
    • Input Current: ±10 mA (per Pin)
    • Output Current: ±45 mA (per Pin)
  • Power Dissipation (PD): 500 mW (per package, with derating for "D/DW" packages: -7.0 mW/°C From 65°C To 125°C).
  • Temperature Ranges:
    • Ambient Operating Temperature (TA): -55°C to +125°C
    • Storage Temperature (Tstg): -65°C to +150°C
  • Clock Conditioning Circuit: Permits operation with very slow clock rise and fall times.
  • Output Drive Current (Source/Sink):
    • Source (IOH): Ranges from -2.37 mA (VDD=5V) to -9.24 mA (VDD=15V) at 125°C.
    • Sink (IOL): Ranges from 1.09 mA (VDD=5V) to 10.9 mA (VDD=15V) at 125°C.
  • Quiescent Current (IDD):
    • Pin 5 High (Auto Reset Disabled): Ranges from 150 µAdc (VDD=5V) to 600 µAdc (VDD=15V) at 125°C.
    • Pin 5 Low (Auto Reset Quiescent Current): Ranges from 1500 µAdc (VDD=10V) to 2000 µAdc (VDD=15V) at 125°C.
  • Switching Characteristics (CL = 50 pF, TA = 25°C):
    • Output Rise and Fall Time (tTLH, tTHL): Ranges from 40 ns (VDD=15V) to 200 ns (VDD=5V).
    • Propagation Delay (Clock to Q):
      • 2^8 Output: Ranges from 0.9 µs (VDD=15V) to 10.5 µs (VDD=5V).
      • 2^16 Output: Ranges from 2.5 µs (VDD=15V) to 18 µs (VDD=5V).
    • Clock Pulse Width (twH(cl)): Ranges from 85 ns (VDD=15V) to 300 ns (VDD=5V).
    • Clock Pulse Frequency (fcl): Ranges from 3.0 MHz (VDD=15V) to 0.75 MHz (VDD=5V).
    • MR Pulse Width (twH(R)): Ranges from 85 ns (VDD=15V) to 300 ns (VDD=5V).
    • Master Reset Removal Time (trem): Ranges from 100 ns (VDD=15V) to 210 ns (VDD=5V).

Usage Features:

  • Programmable Output: The time select inputs (A and B) allow selection of one of four counter stages (2^8, 2^10, 2^13, or 2^16) for the output.
  • Oscillator Bypass: The internal oscillator can be bypassed if an external clock source is available. The external clock should be applied to Pin 3.
  • Master Reset: An external Master Reset (MR) input (Pin 6) provides a way to reset the internal counters and latch, independent of the automatic reset operation.
  • Q/Q Select: The Q/Q Select pin (Pin 9) offers flexibility in output logic level. It determines whether the Q output is initially low or high after a reset.
  • Mode Control: The Mode pin (Pin 10) allows selection between continuous frequency division (Mode = "1") and single transition timer operation (Mode = "0").
  • Auto Reset: The Auto Reset pin (Pin 5) controls the automatic power-on reset. When set to "0", the counter is initialized upon power-on. When set to "1", it provides a low power operation and disables auto-reset.
  • Digital Timer Application: The device can be used as a retriggerable one-shot timer. When MR receives a positive pulse, the Q output goes high and remains high until the selected number of clock pulses are counted, then goes low. The accuracy of this "one shot" is dependent on the input frequency.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pb-Free and RoHS Compliant: These devices are designed to be environmentally friendly, adhering to lead-free and Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directives.
  • Automotive Qualification (NLV Prefix): Devices with the "NLV" prefix are qualified for automotive and other applications requiring unique site and control change requirements, meeting AEC-Q100 standards and PPAP capable. This indicates enhanced reliability and quality control for demanding environments.
  • Package Information: Available in SOIC-14, SOEIAJ-14, and TSSOP-14 packages, with detailed dimensions and soldering footprint information provided for proper board assembly. This information is crucial for manufacturing and ensures correct integration into electronic systems.
