Overview

The OSCAR ONE SERIES is a sophisticated navigation system designed to enhance safety and performance on boats. It functions primarily as a vision unit, providing advanced object detection and navigation assistance. The system is intended for installation on the mast or signal mast of a boat, at a minimum height of 7 meters above the water surface, ensuring a clear, unobstructed view to the front. Proper positioning is crucial to avoid interference from other instruments like wind sensors, antennas, or lights, and to prevent damage from sails or ropes.

Function Description

The OSCAR ONE system utilizes a vision unit to detect objects in the boat's path, contributing to collision avoidance and improved situational awareness. It integrates with the boat's existing NMEA 2000 compatible bus and can be accessed via a compatible Multi-Function Display (MFD), an onboard computer, or a portable device through the boat's Wi-Fi network. The system processes visual data to identify potential hazards, providing alerts and information to the user. Its core functionality revolves around its ability to "see" and interpret the marine environment, offering a layer of intelligent navigation support. The system's software is designed to guide the user through the installation and setup process, including aligning the vision unit for optimal performance.

Usage Features

The OSCAR ONE offers several features to facilitate its use and integration into a boat's navigation system:

  • Flexible Access: Users can interact with the OSCAR ONE via a dedicated app ("OSCAR Navigation") available on Google PlayStore and Apple App Store for Android tablets (V 7.0 or later) and iPads (5th Gen, iOS 11.0.1 or later). Alternatively, it can be accessed through a web browser (Firefox, Chrome; latest version) on a PC/MAC via its default IP address (http://192.168.1.11/WebContent/page/welcome.html) if a Wi-Fi router is available.
  • NMEA 2000 Compatibility: The system seamlessly integrates with the boat's NMEA 2000 bus, allowing it to receive and process boat data for enhanced functionality. A separate backbone for OSCAR ONE with an NMEA bridge connection to the boat backbone is highly recommended for optimal performance.
  • Power Supply: The OSCAR ONE operates on a 12 to 24V DC power supply, requiring a dedicated switch on the switch panel for easy power management.
  • External Buzzer Control: The unit includes an in-built switch to control an external buzzer. This buzzer provides continuous alarm intervals generated by OSCAR ONE, ensuring critical alerts are heard.
  • Adjustable Mounting: The mounting bracket allows for a +/- 15° adjustment to compensate for mast rake or other mounting surface orientations, ensuring the vision unit is correctly angled to the horizon. The OSCAR App assists in achieving the optimal angle during the initial setup.
  • Wind Sensor Bracket (Optional): An optional Universal Wind Sensor Bracket is available, designed to mount wind vanes (B&G, Garmin, Raymarine) on top of the OSCAR ONE, addressing limited space on mast tops. This bracket has pre-drilled clearance holes for common wind vane patterns, with provisions for drilling custom patterns if needed.
  • Guided Setup: The installation process includes a software-guided setup for camera alignment. This involves a second person physically adjusting the OSCAR ONE Unit on the mast until the software indicates correct alignment with a green checkmark.
  • Boat Bus Configuration: Users can select their boat bus source and configure the primary MFD through the OSCAR application's settings panel, ensuring proper data flow and display.

Maintenance Features

Maintaining the OSCAR ONE system ensures its longevity and consistent performance:

  • Software Updates: The system is designed to run the latest available software. Regular updates, which can be performed via the OSCAR APP or a web browser, provide frequent feature and performance enhancements.
  • Lens Cleaning: The camera housing and lens require occasional cleaning. Image quality degradation or excessive dirt buildup indicates a need for cleaning.
    • Cleaning Procedure:
      • Clean the vision unit body with a clean, soft cotton cloth, optionally moistened with a mild detergent.
      • Rinse the camera lenses with fresh water to remove dirt and salt deposits, then allow to dry naturally.
      • For any remaining spots or smears, gently wipe the lens window with a clean microfibre cloth or a mild detergent.
      • Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) can be used if necessary to remove persistent spots or marks.
    • Important Cleaning Precautions:
      • Do NOT wipe the lens windows with a dry cloth or abrasive materials (e.g., paper, scrub brushes) as this can scratch the protective anti-reflective coating.
      • Do NOT use acid or ammonia-based products.
      • Do NOT pressure wash the unit.

By adhering to these maintenance guidelines, users can ensure the OSCAR ONE continues to provide reliable and high-quality navigation assistance.
