Overview

This document outlines the installation and safety instructions for Light Curtains designed for Overhead Door RapidFlex Models 990, 991, 992, 993, 994, and 995. The manual is intended for professional use by trained door systems technicians.

Function Description:

The light curtains serve as a safety mechanism for advanced performance service doors, which are large, heavy objects moved by electric motors. Their primary function is to detect obstructions in the door's path, triggering a reversal of the door's movement to prevent injury or damage. The system comprises a transmitter and a receiver, which project and detect a series of light beams across the door opening. When an object breaks these beams, the system signals the door to stop and reverse.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models: The light curtains are available in 3-foot and 6-foot models.
  • Electronics: The electronics for both 3-foot and 6-foot light curtains are provided in a single model, SG 17.
  • Beam Patterns: Curtain beam patterns are detailed in Appendix 1 of the manual, illustrating the distribution of light beams for both 3-foot and 6-foot models.
  • Transmitter/Receiver Identification: The series is marked on the back of the light curtain, as well as on the transmitter (SGT-17, black cable) and receiver (SGR-17, grey cable).
  • Power Supply: The transmitter and receiver operate on +24V (Brown wire) and 0V (Blue wire).
  • Signal Wires:
    • Transmitter: White wire for Transmitter White (likely a sync or signal output), Black wire for N/C (Not Connected).
    • Receiver: White wire for Receiver White (likely a sync or signal input), Black wire for Programmable input.
  • Sync Wires: The white sync wires from the transmitter and receiver must be connected to each other with a wire nut (500229-0001) for correct operation; they do not connect to the controller.
  • Programmable Input: The receiver's black programmable input needs to be configured as "photoeye1" with a logic set to "NC" (Normally Closed) for the light curtain to function correctly. Any unused programmable input on the controller can be utilized for this purpose.
  • Bracket System (KIT 825707.0001): Designed for versatile installation across various door systems. Light curtain clips can be installed vertically anywhere along the light curtain. Horizontal distance can be adjusted using slots in the brackets or by adding/subtracting pieces.
  • Cord Grip (826310-3444): Required for installing cables into the bottom of the controller case.

Usage Features:

  • Safety Integration: The light curtains are an integral safety component for RapidFlex doors, designed to prevent severe or fatal injury by detecting obstructions.
  • Installation Flexibility: The light curtain can be positioned either in front of or behind the door curtain. The receiver (SGR grey cable) should be placed near the controller, and the transmitter (SGT black cable) on the far side of the door opening.
  • Visual Indicators:
    • Green LED: Both the transmitter and receiver have a green LED to indicate power is on. If not lit, check the 24 VDC with a multimeter.
    • Amber LED: The receiver has an amber LED to indicate a clear light curtain path. It turns off when an object is in the path and flashes on power-up if beams are blocked. If no amber LED is present, check for misalignment or blockage.
  • Reversing Function: When an object is detected in the light curtain's path during door closure, the door will automatically reverse and open fully.
  • Professional Installation: The manual explicitly states that installation is intended ONLY for professional use by a trained door systems technician.

Maintenance Features:

  • Daily Checks: The door is equipped with a sensing edge, and its operation should be checked daily. Any necessary repairs must be made to keep it functional.
  • Overcurrent Device: All models include an overcurrent device that requires manual resetting after an overcurrent condition.
  • Troubleshooting:
    • No Green LED: Check 24 VDC with a multimeter.
    • No Amber LED/Flashing Amber LED: Indicates a blocked or misaligned light curtain path. Raise the curtain or remove the blockage to clear.
    • Testing Reversing Function: Close the door and place an object in the light curtain's path to verify the door reverses and opens fully.
  • Power Disconnection: Before any installation or servicing, especially when removing the Control Panel or motor cover, the electrical power must be turned OFF to prevent severe injury or death.
  • Wiring Precautions: When replacing the Control Panel cover, ensure wires are not pinched or near moving parts. The operator must be electrically grounded.
  • Documentation Access: Installation Manuals, including additional safety warnings and precautions, can be accessed at https://connect.overheaddoor.com.
  • Technical Support: For any questions or lack of understanding regarding the presented information, technical support can be reached at 1-800-929-4692 (Option 2).
