C. Engine Retarder Does Not Work
NOTE: Use this section only if retarder does not work. If none of the SmartWheel functions work, go to Section A.
C1. Symptom: Engine retarder will not turn on (all engines).
C1-1. Possible cause: No accessory power to electronics module.
C1-2. Possible cause: Problem in retarder wiring.

Check Result What To Do Next
C1-1A
Unplug 14-way connector from elec-
tronics module. Turn on ignition.
Check voltage between connector
pin 12 and a cab ground.
Voltmeter reads battery voltage.
No voltage. Go to C1-1 B.
Go to C1-2.
Go to C1-1B.
C1-1B
Check MPX ACC. See CEP on pre-
vious page.
Circuit breaker/fuse OK. An open circuit exists between the
CEP & the electronics module. Trace
circuits. See CEP on previous page.
Circuit breaker bad/fuse Replace circuit breaker or blown.
fuse. Determine cause for fuse to
blow.

Check retarder circuits between
electronics module 14-way connec-
tor pins 9,11, 14 and engine ECM.
DDEC: 953, 979, 583.
CAT: C993, E716, E717.
Cummins: 588, C96JB, C98JB.
Wiring, connectors OK all circults
have continuity.
Go to C2-2.
Wire broken, connector unplugged,
loose or corroded.
Repair or replace wires and/or con-
nectors.
