Adding The SCA to The Heavy-Duty
Coolant For Maintenance
Heavy-duty coolant of all types REQUIRE periodic
additions of an SCA.
Test the coolant periodically for the concentration of
SCA. For the interval, refer to the Operation and
Maintenance Manual, “Maintenance Interval
Schedule” (Maintenance Section). Test the
concentration of SCA.
Additions of SCA are based on the results of the test.
The size of the cooling system determines the
amount of SCA that is needed.
Use the equation that is in Table 34 to determine the
amount of Perkins SCA that is required, if necessary:
Table 34
Equation For Adding The SCA To The Heavy-Duty Coolant
For Maintenance
V × 0.023 = X
V is the total volume of the cooling system.
X is the amount of SCA that is required.
Table 35 is an example for using the equation that is
in Table 34 .

Cleaning the System of Heavy-Duty
Coolant
Perkins cooling system cleaners are designed to
clean the cooling system of harmful scale and
corrosion. Perkins cooling system cleaners dissolve
mineral scale, corrosion products, light oil
contamination and sludge.
Clean the cooling system after used coolant is
drained or before the cooling system is filled with
new coolant.
Clean the cooling system whenever the coolant is
contaminated or whenever the coolant is foaming.
The cooling system must be free from rust, scale,
and any deposits, before corrosion inhibitors can
be effective
To clean the cooling system of heavy-duty antifreeze,
perform the following steps:
1. Drain the cooling system.
2. Fill the system with suitable distilled or deionized
water.
NOTICE
Most commercial cooling system cleaning agents are
corrosive and their use is not recommended by Per-
kins. If these cleaning agents have to be used to
clean heavy deposits, then they should not be left in
the system any longer then recommended by manu-
facturers. Also the engine temperature should not ex-
ceed 30° C (86° F).
The system must be thoroughly flushed with distilled
or deionized water after use of cleaning agents.
NOTICE
Cleaning agents for industrial cooling system must
not be used. These cleaning agents are very aggres-
sive and cause damage to cooling system
components.
3. Dissolve a suitable cleaning agent in water: use
non-foaming detergent to clean oil contamination
or a cooling system cleaner to clean deposits.
Consult your Perkins dealer for suitable product.
4. Run the engine for approximately 30 minutes,
leave the engine to cool down, and drain the
system.
5. Take a sample of the solution from the system.
Allow the sample to sit for at least 30 minutes and
check for signs of oil or deposits. If contaminant is
still present repeat step 1 to step 4.
6. Flush the system with distilled or deionized water.
7. Fill the system with new coolant.
