Overview

This document is an operator's manual for Phoenix Tillers, manufactured by Unifarm Machinery Corporation. It provides comprehensive information for the safe and efficient operation, setup, and maintenance of various tiller models, including T5, T5GE, T10, T10GE, T15GE, T20GE, T25GE, and T30GE.

Function Description

Phoenix Tillers are agricultural implements designed explicitly for tilling land. They are attached to tractors via a three-point lift system and utilize a PTO (Power Take-Off) shaft to power a rotating rotor equipped with tines (blades) to break up and aerate the soil. The primary function is to prepare soil for planting by breaking clods, mixing organic matter, and creating a fine seedbed. The manual emphasizes that any use other than tilling land is considered inappropriate and jeopardizes operator safety and machine integrity.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual includes a detailed "Technical Data" table covering various models and their specifications:

  • Models: T5, T5GE, T10, T10GE, T15GE, T20GE, T25GE, T30GE.
  • Width: Ranges from 100 cm (39 inches) to 305 cm (120 inches).
  • HP (Horsepower) Compatibility: Ranges from 15-35 HP for smaller models (T5, T5GE) up to 90-160 HP for larger models (T30GE).
  • Weight: Ranges from 130 kg (290 lbs) to 1310 kg (2908 lbs).
  • Working Depth: Consistent across all models at 18 cm (7 inches) or 20 cm (8 inches) for T15GE/T20GE, and 25 cm (10 inches) for T25GE, and 28 cm (11 inches) for T30GE.
  • Side Drive: Models can have either Chain or Gear drive.
  • Blades (Quantity): The number of blades varies by model and width, ranging from 20 to 72 blades.
  • Blade Type: Blades can be Curved or "L" Shaped, with specific models indicating compatibility with one or both types.
  • Gearbox: Some models are equipped with a gearbox, allowing for changes in rotor speed.
  • PTO RPM: Unless specifically marked otherwise, the PTO RPM is 540.
  • Torque Specifications: A table provides recommended torque values for M-threaded screws/bolts of different grades (8.8 and 10.9) and thread sizes (M6 to M18), ranging from 11 Nm (8.5 Lb-ft) for M6 (grade 8.8) to 475 Nm (350 Lb-ft) for M18 (grade 10.9).

Usage Features

The manual outlines several key usage features and setup procedures:

  • Attachment to Tractor: Phoenix tillers are designed for attachment to tractors with a three-point lift system of the correct category and suitable ball ends. The attachment position can be adjusted by releasing bolts and modifying plate positions (T5, T10, T15, T20) or by changing the lower position of floating brackets (T25, T30). Proper alignment and secure connection of lower arms and the top link are crucial, ensuring the central unit axis is parallel to the ground to minimize PTO stress.
  • PTO Shaft Connection: Emphasizes checking RPM rating and rotation direction match between the tractor and tiller. Critical safety instructions include ensuring plastic pipes overlap by at least 1/3 of their length when fully extended and maintaining a 1-2 cm clearance when retracted. PTO shields must be anchored and turn smoothly.
  • Working Depth Adjustment: Achieved by adjusting the lateral skids. Raising the skids increases working depth, and lowering them decreases it. Specific instructions are provided for different models (T5, T10, T15, T20 vs. T25, T30).
  • Drag Board Adjustment: The height of the rear drag board can be adjusted to achieve a more compact and smooth ground finish.
  • Gearbox (T25, T30): These models are equipped with a gearbox, allowing the operator to change the rotor speed independently from the tractor's PTO speed by removing a cover and inverting gears.
  • Chain Adjuster (T5, T10): These models have a chain drive, and adjustments must be made by an authorized dealer or workshop.
  • Start-up and Shut-down: Detailed procedures for safe start-up (lifting the tiller, engaging PTO, lowering to working position) and shut-down (lifting to transport position or lowering to ground, stopping PTO, parking brake, engine off, key removal).
  • Road Transport: Operators must follow local traffic regulations, slow down, and ensure SMV signs, warning lights, and reflectors are visible.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides a structured maintenance schedule to ensure the longevity and efficiency of the tiller:

  • First Check: After 50 working hours, change the oil in the gearbox and ensure all screws and bolts are tightened.
  • Every 8 Working Hours: Grease the rotor support through the grease fitting and grease the PTO shaft crosses.
  • Every 50 Working Hours: Check the oil level in the case/bevel gear pair and the side transmission and rotor support. Add SAE EP 80W90 oil if needed. Check all screws and bolts, especially on the blades, for tightness.
  • Every 500 Working Hours: Change the oil of the case/bevel gear pair, side transmission, and rotor support using SAE EP 80W90 oil.
  • Blade Replacement: Blades should be replaced if broken or bent to maintain optimum efficiency. The manual specifies that T5, T10, T15, T20, T25, T30 tillers are equipped with 6 blades per flange, but this can be reduced to four blades per flange (except for T25, T30) if ground conditions require it. Bolts must be placed with the screw head on the blade side and the washer/nut on the flange side. When replacing multiple blades, replace one at a time to maintain the helical layout.
  • General Maintenance: Emphasizes cleaning fittings before lubricating, using correct oil types, performing maintenance with the engine off and equipment on the ground, and regularly checking all machine guards. Proper disposal of old oil according to local laws is also highlighted.
  • Spare Parts: Instructions for ordering spare parts, requiring equipment type, width, part number, description, quantity, and preferred transport type.
