Effect of the wind
Wind (head, cross or tailwind) affects aircraft’s ground speed (GS).
Headwind on takeoff or landing causes the takeoff and landing distance length to shorten as the GS is
smaller during these two flight stages. The opposite holds true for tailwind on takeoff and landing as
tailwind prolongs takeoff and landing distances significantly.
WARNING! Tailwind affects takeoff and landing performance by more than twice as much
as headwind does.
The table below provides data about the effect of headwind (+) and tailwind (-) on the runway length
required for takeoff and landing (referenced for sea level conditions, airplane at MTOM). Relative effect
is maintained at any elevation.
