Overview

The Polaris Vac-Sweep 180 is an automatic swimming pool cleaner designed for efficient and dependable service, cleaning an average pool in 3 hours or less. It operates by traveling randomly throughout the pool, vacuuming, sweeping, and scrubbing the bottom, sides, and most steps and swimouts. The cleaner is intended for use with a Polaris Booster Pump, which should be installed by a licensed electrician according to applicable electrical codes.

Technical Specifications and Components:

The Polaris 180 comes with several key components:

  • All-Purpose Bag (#24): Collects debris from the pool.
  • Sweep Hose (#4): Assists in cleaning and preventing debris from getting trapped in corners.
  • Head Float (#31): Keeps the cleaner stable and in an upright position.
  • Cleaner Head: The main body of the cleaner.
  • Complete Feed Hose: Connects the cleaner to the pool's dedicated cleaner line.
  • Back-up Valve (#51): Pulls the Polaris away from potential obstacles and increases its random pattern, cycling approximately every 2 minutes.
  • Sweep Hose Scrubber (#28): Helps keep the bottom and sides of the pool clean and prevents the sweep hose from spraying water out of the pool.
  • Quick Disconnect (#44) with Universal Wall Fitting (#40): Allows for easy connection and disconnection to the pool wall.
  • Universal Wall Fitting Pressure Restrictors (#39): Includes one red and one blue restrictor to help the Polaris operate at its optimum level of efficiency by regulating water pressure.

Installation Features:

  • Dedicated Cleaner Line: A 1-1/2" dedicated cleaner line, approximately 6" below the water level with 1-1/2" female threads, is recommended. If the line has 3/4" female threads, a 3/4" x 1-1/2" coupling (part #G-9) is needed.
  • Over-the-deck Installation: An optional over-the-deck kit (part #G-12) can be used if a dedicated cleaner line is not available, running an aboveground feed line from the booster pump over the pool deck.
  • Universal Wall Fitting Installation: The universal wall fitting, with a blue pressure restrictor pre-installed, screws into the return line. The quick disconnect then secures into the wall fitting.
  • Feed Hose Sizing: The feed hose must be properly sized to ensure optimal cleaner performance. This involves straightening the hose, measuring the deepest part of the pool, and cutting the clear and white hose sections to specific lengths. Floats (#48) should be evenly distributed (1-1/2 to 3 feet apart) on the white hoses, with one float against the back-up valve and another 2-3 feet upstream on the clear hose.
  • Assembly: The clear hose attaches to the feed mast, and the filter bag is fastened loosely around the clear hose with a velcro strip.

Usage Features:

  • Operation Sequence: Always turn on the filtration pump at least 30 seconds before turning on the booster pump. If using time clocks, set them so the Polaris turns on 30 minutes after the filtration pump and shuts off 30 minutes before the filtration pump.
  • Optimal Performance: The Polaris 180 should travel randomly, vacuuming, sweeping, and scrubbing. Its wheel RPM should be between 28 and 32 for proper operation.
  • Thrust Jet Adjustment: The thrust jet (#26) position determines the cleaner's direction. Loosening screws allows adjustment, with the standard position being straight back. Moving it to 12 o'clock increases climbing ability.
  • Head Float Adjustment: The head float (#31) maintains cleaner stability. Its standard position is 1/2 to 1 inch from the feed mast. Moving it forward increases climbing ability, while moving it out from the feed mast keeps the nose down.
  • Sweep Hose Adjustment: The sweep hose (#4) should move in a gentle sweeping motion. Turning the sweep hose adjustment screw (#16) clockwise decreases its motion.
  • Pressure Restrictor Usage: The universal wall fitting includes a blue restrictor for less water restriction and an optional red restrictor for maximum restriction. These work with the pressure relief valve (#43) to maintain optimal water pressure. If RPM is above 32, switch to the red restrictor or unscrew the pressure relief valve. If RPM is below 28, ensure no restrictor is used.
  • Connecting/Disconnecting: Turn off both pumps before connecting or disconnecting the Polaris. Lubricating the quick disconnect o-ring periodically can ease this process.
  • Operating Time: Start with 3 hours of operation and adjust as needed to keep the pool clean. For heavy debris, run two shorter cycles daily and empty the filter bag between cycles.
  • Winterizing: Remove the Polaris from the pool and drain all water before storing for winter. Also, drain the booster pump by removing the drain plug (part #P-20).

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Bag Cleaning: Release the velcro, open the closure, and dump debris. If the velcro loses grip, rinse, dry, and clean with a stiff brush. Reconnect tightly to the vacuum tube.
  • Periodic Maintenance: Regularly check and replace wear items not covered under warranty.
  • Filter Screen (#41): Located inside the quick disconnect, it prevents debris from entering the Polaris. Clean by pulling it out, rinsing, and pressing it back into place. Running the Polaris without the filter screen can cause damage.
  • Wear Rings (#37): Protect the sweep hose. Rotate them as they wear and replace before the weights on either side begin to wear.
  • Tires (#12): Provide traction and protect the Polaris and pool bottom. Replace when edges become rounded.
  • Sweep Hose Scrubber (#28): Replace when worn to maintain cleaning effectiveness and prevent water spray. Rotate it to maximize its life.
  • Backwashing Pool Filter: Always disconnect the Polaris from the pool wall before backwashing the pool filter. Run the filtration system for at least five minutes before reconnecting the Polaris.
  • Backwashing Polaris: Turn off pumps, remove Polaris from the pool (leaving it connected to the wall), disconnect feed hose and bag, and remove sweep hose. Remove the thrust jet assembly (#26) by unscrewing two phillips-head screws (ensure o-ring is removed). Insert the feed hose down the vacuum tube over the jet, hold a finger over the feed hose mast and sweep hose barb, and have someone turn on the pumps for about one minute. Turn off pumps and reassemble.
  • Storage: Never store in direct sunlight or with the feed hose coiled. If coils form, lay the hose in the sun or soak in hot water to straighten.

Accessories:

  • Sweep Hose Weight (Part #B-2): Can be installed if the sweep hose or thrust jet sprays water out of the pool.
  • Ladder Guard Kit (Part #G-21): Prevents the Polaris from getting hung up around pool ladders or handrails.
  • WaterStars (Part #7-400-00) and WaterStars WF (Part #11-100-00): Fountains that connect to the universal wall fitting, allowing quick switching between cleaner and fountain.
  • Leaf Bag (Part #A-15): A larger, more durable bag for collecting heavy debris like leaves and acorns, especially useful after storms.
  • Disposable Sand/Silt Bag (Part #G-45): Ultra-fine material bags used with other bags to catch fine silt and make cleaning easier. Sold in packs of four.
  • SpaWand (Part #5-100-00): A hand-cleaning device for spas, fish ponds, and small bodies of water, requiring no hoses or hookups.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common issues such as hanging up on corners, sweep hose spraying too much water, going in circles, not climbing walls, sweep hose sucked into vacuum tube, running on its side, feed hose tangling, and floating. Solutions involve checking wheel RPM, back-up valve cycling, thrust jet adjustment, head float adjustment, sweep hose scrubber condition, feed hose length and float placement, swivel freedom, filter screen cleanliness, and pump/skimmer basket cleanliness. It emphasizes using genuine Polaris replacement parts to ensure proper operation and prevent damage.
