Overview

The Polaris Vac-Sweep® 65 is an automatic swimming pool cleaner designed for aboveground pools. Its primary function is to vacuum the bottom and sweep the sides of any size or shape aboveground pool, collecting dirt and debris to leave the pool sparkling clean. The cleaner is designed for ease of use and installation, performing the hard work automatically.

Function Description:

The Polaris 65 operates by circulating clean, filtered water and moving randomly throughout the pool. The surface module floats level on the pool surface and changes directions approximately every 15-25 seconds. The filter bag is designed to contact the pool floor for the majority of the time, collecting debris ranging from large leaves to fine sand. The cleaner is capable of vacuuming and sweeping the pool in three hours or less. It comes equipped with an automatic pressure relief valve in the quick disconnect, which releases water if the cleaner receives too much water pressure, preventing damage.

Important Technical Specifications:

The Polaris 65 is composed of several key components:

  • Surface Module: The main floating unit that houses the internal mechanism.
  • Jet Sweep Assembly: Directs water flow to create the sweeping action.
  • All-Purpose Bag: Collects debris. An optional Leaf Bag (Part #6-207-00) is available for larger, heavier debris like leaves and acorns.
  • Sweep Hose (7 Ft.): Connects the jet sweep assembly to the surface module.
  • Float Hose (24 Ft.): Connects the surface module to the pool wall fitting. The float hose length is critical for proper operation and must be adjusted to be four feet short of the farthest point in the pool. A float hose extension kit (part #6-221-00) is available if needed.
  • Quick Disconnect: Connects the float hose to the universal wall fitting and contains a filter screen and pressure relief valve.
  • Universal Wall Fitting (UWF): Installs into the pool's return line. Adapter kits (part #6-510-00) are available for 1-1/4" or 2" eyeball fittings.
  • Mechanism: Located within the surface module, it includes components like the randomizer tube and randomizer ball, which are crucial for the cleaner's movement and direction changes.
  • Water Pressure: The cleaner is designed to operate optimally with water pressure between 5 and 10 psi. A pressure tester (part #6-113-00) is available to verify this.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Requires flushing new plumbing lines and ensuring a clean pool filter before installation. The universal wall fitting is screwed into the pool's return line, and the quick disconnect is attached.
  • Float Hose Adjustment: The float hose must be precisely cut to ensure the surface module is approximately one foot from the pool wall when the pump is running, allowing the filter bag to effectively contact the pool floor.
  • Operation Monitoring: Users should observe the surface module's movement to ensure it's not operating too fast (changing directions too frequently) or too slow. If the cleaner is too fast, the pressure relief valve can be unscrewed to slow it down.
  • Safety Guidelines:
    • Always disconnect the Polaris from the pool wall when cleaning or backwashing the pool filter.
    • Allow the filtration system to run for at least five minutes after cleaning/backwashing before reconnecting the Polaris.
    • Handle the Polaris with care; it is not a toy and children should not play with it.
    • Never handle the Polaris when it is operating.
    • Always remove the Polaris before swimmers enter the pool or before chemical shock treatments.
    • Any pool water unsafe for swimming is unsafe for the Polaris.
    • Running the Polaris without the filter screen can cause damage.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Bag Emptying: The all-purpose bag should be emptied regularly. To do this, turn off the pool pump, push in the buttons, slide the bag off the jet sweep assembly, and turn it inside out over a trash can. Ensure the bag's frame is completely open when reattaching.
  • Filter Screen Cleaning: The filter screen, located inside the quick disconnect, acts as a safety filter. It should be pulled out, rinsed to remove debris, and firmly pressed back into place regularly, especially if it clogs often. Persistent clogging may indicate an issue with the pool's filtration system, requiring consultation with a pool professional.
  • Pool Filter Maintenance: Maintaining a clean pool filter is crucial for the Polaris's optimal efficiency. The Polaris should always be disconnected from the pool wall before cleaning and backwashing the pool filter.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a detailed troubleshooting section with solutions for common issues like the cleaner not cleaning the entire pool, running slowly, the surface module diving or leaning, the float hose coiling, or the surface module moving too fast. Solutions often involve checking the pressure relief valve, filter screen, float hose length, and the internal mechanism (randomizer tube, randomizer ball, filter connector, piston).
  • Storage and Winterizing: When storing the Polaris 65, especially for winter, remove the sweep hose and float hose from the surface module, and the jet sweep assembly from the sweep hose. The surface module should be carefully drained of water. It is recommended to store the surface module in a clean, dry, warm environment out of direct sunlight. Hoses should be laid or hung straight to prevent coiling. A hanger kit (part #6-109-00) is available for convenient storage. The universal wall fitting should be removed from the pool wall and stored attached to the quick disconnect. A UWF removal tool (part #10-102-00) may be necessary.
  • Genuine Parts: To ensure proper operation and long life, users are advised to insist on genuine Polaris replacement parts, identifiable by Polaris part bags or the Polaris logo. Non-Polaris parts may adversely affect operation or cause damage.

Accessories:

  • Leaf Bag (Part #6-207-00): For collecting larger, heavier debris.
  • Turtle Top (Part #6-309-00): A decorative replacement top.
  • Hanger Kit (Part #6-109-00): For convenient storage, keeping the Polaris safe and preventing hose coiling.
  • WaterStars (Part #7-400-00) and WaterStars WF (Part #11-100-00): Decorative fountains to beautify the pool.

The Polaris 65 is backed by a limited warranty. The cleaning unit (all parts and components) is warranted against defects in material and workmanship. The body bottom is warranted for three years, and other parts for one year from the date of manufacture or purchase. The warranty does not cover normal replacement items (like the filter bag), improper installation, handling, usage, storage, winter freezing, abuse, maintenance, or damage from unauthorized repairs. It's important to note that the warranty does not cover pattern removal, abrasion, or markings on vinyl liners, especially if the pool is installed on a hard, abrasive, or uneven surface.
