Overview

The Radial JPC Stereo Direct Box is an active "consumer to pro" stereo direct box specifically designed for computer sound cards and electronic media. It converts -10dB consumer signals to balanced mic level and features transformer-isolated inputs to eliminate ground loops. The JPC is 48V phantom powered, eliminating the need for batteries and allowing for long cable runs. Its compact and ultra-rugged bookend design makes it suitable for demanding rental and touring environments.

Function Description:

The JPC acts as an interface between consumer audio devices (like PCs, laptops, CD players, DJ mixers, DVD audio players, iPods, Walkmans, cassette decks, video players, stereo pre-amp outputs, stereo keyboards, stereo drum machines, and stereo samplers) and professional sound systems. It takes unbalanced, high-impedance, line-level signals from consumer devices and converts them into balanced, low-impedance, mic-level signals suitable for professional audio equipment. The transformer-isolated inputs prevent hum and buzz caused by ground loops, while the active drive circuit performs impedance conversion and balancing for clear signal transmission over long cables.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Frequency Range: 40Hz to 20kHz (+/- 3dB)
  • Type: Active with isolated inputs
  • Powering: 48-Volt phantom powered, 5mA draw
  • Size: 2" x 3" x 6"
  • Weight: 1kg or 2lbs
  • Dynamic Range: 80dB
  • Distortion: 0.5% at 1kHz with -10dB input
  • Intermodulation Distortion: Less than 1%
  • Phase Distortion: Less than 5º at 100Hz, 0.1° at 1kHz
  • Linear Response: +/-1dB from 50Hz to 15kHz; +/- 3dB from 20Hz to 20kHz
  • Input Connections: 1/4" TRS, 1/8" TRS, dual stereo RCA
  • Output Connections: XLR balanced, AES pin-2 HOT

Usage Features:

  • Input Flexibility: Features 1/4" TRS, 1/8" TRS, and dual stereo RCA input connectors, all of which can also be used as thru-puts. This eliminates the need for extra adaptors and allows for bridging the signal to a second mixer or tape recorder.
  • -10dB Pad: A switchable -10dB pad on the input panel reduces the level from loud sources, preventing overload and distortion, especially useful for headphone outputs from devices like mini MP3 players.
  • 48V Phantom Power: The unit is powered by 48V phantom power from the mixing console, indicated by two power-on LEDs on the front panel. This eliminates the need for batteries or external power supplies.
  • XLR Outputs: Twin XLR male output connectors follow the AES standard (Pin-1 ground, Pin-2 hot) and provide mic-level signals suitable for connection to a console's mic pre-amp.
  • Ground Lift: A stereo ground lift toggle switch (on the side) is provided, although the inputs are already 100% isolated, making an input-to-output ground connection unnecessary.
  • Stereo Operation: Designed for stereo signals, converting them to balanced mic levels for both left and right channels. The 1/4" input can also accept mono instrument signals, sending them to the left XLR output.
  • Easy Deployment: Compact size makes it easy to fit in a toolbox, place adjacent to laptop computers, and store in computer bags.
  • Rack Mountable: Can be rack mounted with the Radial J-Rak.

Maintenance Features:

  • Rugged Construction: Ultra-rugged bookend design with a baked enamel finish and 14-gauge steel outer shell creates a protected zone around connectors and switches, ensuring durability for years of performance.
  • Welded I-beam Construction: Makes it impossible to torque the PC board, providing maximum resistance against cold solder joints and enhancing reliability.
  • Military Grade PC Board: Features a full surface ground plane to reduce RF noise susceptibility.
  • Long-Life Switches: High-cycle rated push switches are used for reduced maintenance.
  • Rubber Bottom: A no-slip full rubber bottom provides mechanical isolation, electrical insulation, and stability.
  • 3-Year Warranty: Backed by a full 3-year limited warranty covering defects in material and workmanship. Radial will repair or replace defective components (excluding batteries, finish, and wear and tear under normal use) for three years from the original purchase date.
