The Rapsodo HITTING 2.0 is a comprehensive baseball/softball training system designed to provide detailed data and analysis for hitters. It consists of a monitor, a Rapsodo Computing Engine (RCE), and a companion Diamond App, all working together to track and analyze ball flight and hitting metrics.
Function Description:
The primary function of the Rapsodo HITTING 2.0 is to measure and provide feedback on various aspects of a hit ball, including exit velocity, launch angle, direction, spin rate, spin direction, and 3D ball flight. This data helps players and coaches understand the mechanics of a swing and the resulting ball trajectory, enabling targeted improvements. The system operates by placing the monitor and RCE in a protective tank 14 feet from home plate, with the camera opening facing the batter. The monitor captures data, which is then processed by the RCE and displayed in the Diamond App on an iPad.
Usage Features:
Device Operation:
- Turning On/Off: Both the monitor and RCE are turned on and off by pressing their respective power buttons. For the RCE, it takes 10-15 seconds for the power LED to turn on, indicating readiness.
- LED Displays:
- Monitor Front LED: Displays information about the monitor's status. A RED light indicates the monitor is on but not ready to measure. A GREEN LIGHT signifies it's ready for hitting. A BLUE LIGHT indicates data processing after a hit, and once it returns to green, data is ready to be viewed.
- Monitor Rear LED: Provides connectivity and battery information. A RED light means it's not connected to the RCE, waiting for USB sync. A GREEN LIGHT confirms successful connection to the RCE via USB. A RED FLASHING LIGHT warns of low battery. An AMBER LIGHT indicates charging, and when off, the battery is fully charged.
- RCE LEDs: These LEDs indicate the connection status between the RCE, monitor, and app, as well as battery status. Different color combinations signify various states, such as RCE and monitor connected, ready to record data, data processing, low battery warning, or connection issues with the app or monitor.
App Integration (Diamond App):
- Account Setup: Users need to create a coach account and player profiles on cloud.rapsodo.com. These credentials are used for both the Cloud platform and the Diamond App.
- App Download: The Rapsodo Diamond App must be downloaded from the Apple App Store. It requires the latest version of iOS and an iPad Air 2 or newer. Team membership is necessary to collect and store all data.
- Pairing:
- Connect the RCE to the monitor via a USB to Micro-USB cable.
- Press the power buttons on both the monitor and RCE.
- Connect the iPad to the Rapsodo Wi-Fi in the iPad settings.
- Open the Rapsodo Diamond App and press the Wi-Fi Connection button.
- Calibration:
- Select "recalibrate" from the devices tab in the bottom right-hand corner of the app.
- Adjust monitor angles to 20 degrees and 90 degrees as guided by the app.
- For final calibration, a person stands on the center of home plate, and the red line in the azimuth view should align directly down the middle of home plate.
- Starting a Session: After pairing and calibration, select a player and session type. Once the main play screen loads, data recording begins with each swing.
- Session Types (Hitting):
- Certified Assessment: A 15-hitting scripted session to analyze and evaluate athletes, performed in front toss or live settings. Provides an overall score based on exit velocity, launch angle, and consistency.
- Tee: Stationary setting with 0 mph pitch speed.
- Soft Toss: Front toss setting with pitch speed under 35 mph.
- Batting Practice: Multi-option function allowing switching between Tee, Soft-toss, and Live within the same session.
- Pitching Machine: Used in Live/BP mode for incoming pitch speeds over 35 MPH, can be off machine or coach pitch.
- Live: Simulates scrimmages or game-like environments to track hitter performance against live pitchers.
- Game Mode: An interactive, video-game-like environment for practicing specific challenges like target practice and situational hitting.
- Data Collection: After a ball is batted, a processing wheel appears for 4-8 seconds before data is displayed. If the wheel doesn't appear or no data is recorded, users should check alignment, session type, and recalibrate if necessary. If the processing wheel appears when no ball is in play, ensure other lanes are at least 8 ft apart, no fans or HVAC units are blowing, and no other players are practicing behind the recording player.
- Completing a Session: Finish the session in the app, connect to an Internet-based Wi-Fi, and use the "Upload Progress" feature in Settings to sync data to cloud.rapsodo.com.
- Game Mode Linking: To use Game Mode, turn on HITTING 2.0 (without connecting to Rapsodo Wi-Fi), open the Diamond App while connected to the internet, and navigate to Settings > Subscription > License > Link Device. Once linked, drag and drop the Rapsodo Diamond App into the Rapsodo Game Mode App to select ball type, game version, and add players.
Maintenance Features:
- Charging: Both the monitor and RCE must be charged separately using the included USB cables and charger.
- Monitor Charging: Connect the Micro-USB cable to the port on the rear monitor panel. An AMBER rear LED indicates charging, and the LED turning off means it's fully charged. A FLASHING RED LED indicates low battery.
- RCE Charging: Connect the USB-C cable to the charging port on the side of the RCE. An AMBER power LED indicates charging, and the LED turning off means it's fully charged. A FLASHING RED LED indicates low battery.
- App Updates: Rapsodo periodically updates the Diamond App to improve features and monitor performance. Users are recommended to regularly download the latest version.
- Troubleshooting: A troubleshooting table is provided for common issues such as low monitor battery (charge separately), inaccurate results (check tank placement and calibration), inability to connect to the app (disconnect/reconnect Wi-Fi and Diamond App, ensure monitor is green), and data not syncing to the cloud (connect to internet-based Wi-Fi and use "Upload Progress" in settings).
- Interference: The Rapsodo HITTING 2.0 is sensitive to electrical or optical interference from everyday items like appliances, computers, cell phones, and bulbs, which can cause false readings. Users should be aware of these potential interferences in the operating environment.
- Lighting Conditions: The device should be used in well-lit environments, as performance may vary in low light conditions, leading to incorrect measurements.
- Water Resistance: The Rapsodo HITTING 2.0 is not water resistant and should not be exposed to water or used in wet conditions to prevent damage.
