Overview

The Rapsodo PITCHING 2.0 is a sophisticated device designed to analyze and evaluate baseball pitches, providing detailed data for coaches and players to improve performance. It operates in conjunction with the Rapsodo Cloud and Diamond App, creating a comprehensive system for tracking, storing, and analyzing pitching metrics.

Function Description:

The core function of the Rapsodo PITCHING 2.0 is to accurately measure various aspects of a baseball pitch, from the moment of release to its flight path and impact in the strike zone. This is achieved through a combination of a monitor and a Rapsodo Computing Engine (RCE), which work together to capture and process data. The device provides insights into ball flight characteristics such as velocity, spin rate, spin efficiency, spin direction, true spin rate, pitch break, and 3D trajectory. Additionally, it captures release metrics including release height, release angle, release side, release extension, and horizontal angle. The system also offers strike zone analysis, providing immediate feedback on strike percentage and heat map breakdowns. All collected data is stored in the Rapsodo Cloud and can be accessed and analyzed through the Diamond App, allowing for player profiles, team memberships, and session management.

Usage Features:

The Rapsodo PITCHING 2.0 system is designed for ease of use, with clear instructions for setup, operation, and data collection.

What's Inside the Box:

The package includes the Monitor, Protective Tank & RCE, USB Cables & Charger, Measuring Tape, Monitor Clip, and Protective Cases. These components are essential for setting up and protecting the device during use.

Rapsodo Cloud + Diamond App:

To begin, users need to create a coach account and player profiles on cloud.rapsodo.com. The login credentials are the same for both the Cloud and the Diamond App. The Rapsodo Diamond App, which is crucial for using PITCHING 2.0, must be downloaded from the Apple App Store. The app requires the latest version of iOS and an iPad Air 2 or newer. A team membership is necessary to collect and store all data.

Product Overview:

The system consists of a Monitor, a Clip, a Tank, and the RCE. These components are assembled to create the pitching analysis setup.

Operating the Monitor:

To turn the monitor on, users press the power button. The front LED display will show RED, indicating the monitor is on but not ready to measure. The rear LED will also show RED when ready to connect. To turn the monitor off, simply press the power button again. The monitor features a front LED light for play information, an ON/OFF button, a Micro-USB port, and a rear LED light for connectivity and battery information.

Understanding the Monitor LED Displays:

The front LED display provides status information:

  • RED LIGHT ("NOT READY"): Monitor is on but not ready to measure.
  • GREEN LIGHT ("PITCH"): Monitor is ready for pitching. After a pitch, it indicates data is ready to be viewed on the app and the device is ready for the next pitch.
  • BLUE LIGHT ("PROCESSING"): Monitor is processing data after a valid pitch; wait for the green light.

The rear LED display provides connectivity and battery information:

  • RED LIGHT: Not connected to RCE, waiting for USB sync.
  • GREEN LIGHT: Successfully connected to RCE through USB.
  • RED FLASHING LIGHT: Warning for low battery; recharge monitor.
  • AMBER LIGHT: Switched off and charging.
  • OFF: Battery is fully charged when USB is plugged into a charging device or PC.

Operating the Rapsodo Computing Engine (RCE):

To turn the RCE on, press the power button. After 10-15 seconds, the power LED will turn on, and the RCE will be ready to connect to the monitor. To turn the RCE off, press the power button; it will take 10-15 seconds to power down. The RCE has LEDs for connectivity and battery information, a USB-C charging port, an ON/OFF button, and a lanyard connection. It also has a USB port that connects to the monitor.

Understanding the RCE LED Displays:

The RCE LED displays provide comprehensive status updates:

  • All LEDs lit (green): RCE and monitor connected.
  • First two LEDs lit (green), third flashing (green): RCE and monitor connected to application, needs calibration or is in ‘Pause Mode’.
  • First LED lit (green), second flashing (green), third off: Ready to record data.
  • First LED flashing (green), second and third off: Data processing.
  • First LED lit (amber), second and third off: RCE switched off and charging.
  • First LED flashing (red), second and third off: Warning for low battery; recharge RCE.
  • First LED lit (red), second and third off: RCE turned on, not connected to app and monitor.
  • First LED lit (red), second flashing (red), third off: RCE turned on, connected to app but not the monitor.

Charging the Devices:

Both the monitor and RCE must be charged separately.

  • Charging the Monitor: Connect the included Micro-USB cable to the port on the rear monitor panel. The rear LED will show AMBER while charging and switch off when fully charged. A FLASHING RED LED indicates low battery.
  • Charging the RCE: Connect the included USB-C cable to the USB-C charging port (located on the side of the power button). The power LED will show AMBER while charging and switch off when fully charged. A FLASHING RED LED indicates low battery.

Pairing the RCE and Diamond App:

  1. Connect the RCE to the monitor via USB to mini USB.
  2. Press the power button on both the monitor and RCE.
  3. Connect to the Rapsodo Wi-Fi in iPad settings.
  4. Open the Rapsodo Diamond App and press the Wi-Fi Connection button.

Device Placement and Setup:

Rapsodo PITCHING 2.0 operates in a tank, and correct positioning is vital for accurate results.

  • Internal Tank Set-Up: Attach the monitor to the mount plate, place the RCE in its housing, and connect the USB from the monitor to the RCE.
  • Tank Positioning: The Rapsodo PITCHING 2.0 should be placed 15'6” from the front of home plate, with the camera opening facing the pitcher. The tank must be on an even surface and should NOT be used in rain or wet conditions. Using the device at the designated distance and on a flat surface is crucial to prevent injury.

Calibration:

  1. Select "recalibrate" from the devices tab in the bottom right-hand corner of the app.
  2. Adjust monitor angles to 20 degrees and 90 degrees.
  3. For calibration, a person should stand on the center of home plate. The red line in the azimuth view should go directly down the middle of home plate.

Diamond App Session Management:

  • Starting a Session: Refer to the "Pairing the RCE and Diamond App" (Page 9) and "Calibration" (Page 11) sections. Select a player and session to begin. Once the main play screen loads, users can throw a pitch, and data will start recording.
  • Session Types (Pitching):
    • Certified Assessment: A 15-pitch scripted session to analyze and evaluate athletes. Requires a fastball as the base pitch (maximum 5 pitches). Provides an overall session score and individual pitch scores once synced to the cloud.
    • Low Intent: A bullpen session where the pitcher does not reach 100% effort, useful for arm maintenance or pitch development at lower intensity/volume.
    • High Intent: A bullpen session where the pitcher faces no live hitters but throws at 100% effort.
    • Flat Ground: Pitcher is not throwing off a mound.
    • Live: Live At-Bats, scrimmages, or game-like environments to track and compare pitcher performance against live batters.
    • Rehab: Low-intent, low-volume sessions for players on a strict pitch count after injury/fatigue. These sessions are not included in overall averages in reports.
  • Views: The Diamond App offers three screens: Data Screen, Video Screen, and Field View. Video recording is automatic at the start of a session but can be turned off by selecting the red recording button.
  • Collecting Data: After a pitch, a processing wheel appears, and data should display on the screen within 4-8 seconds.

Troubleshooting Table:
