Overview

The Raritan PHII Marine Toilet is a robust and versatile marine sanitation device designed for both manual and electric operation, offering a range of features for efficient waste management on boats. Its primary function is to provide a reliable and hygienic toilet system that can handle both freshwater and saltwater environments.

Function Description:

The PHII Marine Toilet operates as a pump-action toilet, utilizing a piston pump mechanism to draw in water and discharge bowl contents. In manual mode, the user pumps a handle to initiate the flush cycle. The valve handle has two main positions: "FLUSH" and "DRY." In the "FLUSH" position, pumping the handle draws water into the bowl and discharges its contents. In the "DRY" position, pumping only discharges bowl contents while drawing air in through an air valve assembly, preventing pressure buildup. This dual functionality allows for efficient flushing with water or a "dry" flush to remove contents without adding more water, which can be useful for conserving water or when preparing for extended periods of non-use.

For enhanced convenience, the PHII can be converted to electric operation using the P104E** Electric Conversion Kit. This kit replaces the manual pump mechanism with an electric gearbox and motor, allowing for push-button flushing. The electric conversion maintains the core function of drawing water and discharging waste but automates the pumping action, making it easier to use.

The toilet is designed to handle both intake and discharge processes effectively. It can be plumbed for above-waterline or below-waterline installations, with specific recommendations for vented loops to prevent backflow and ensure proper operation, especially in below-waterline setups. The system includes an intake and discharge valve ball and gasket to control water flow and prevent leaks.

Usage Features:

The PHII Marine Toilet is designed for user-friendliness and adaptability.

  • Manual Operation: The manual pump handle provides reliable flushing, even in situations where electrical power is unavailable. The "FLUSH" and "DRY" positions offer control over water usage during flushing.
  • Electric Operation (with P104E Conversion Kit):** The electric conversion simplifies flushing to a momentary push-button action, enhancing convenience. The electrical system requires specific wiring and circuit breaker/fuse sizes depending on the voltage (12V or 24V) to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Water Source Flexibility: The toilet can use either fresh or saltwater for flushing, depending on the boat's plumbing setup. However, using brackish or saltwater can lead to odors, which can be mitigated by installing a Knocks Out Odor Kit (#KO2).
  • Waste Management: The system is designed to discharge waste efficiently. For below-waterline installations, vented loops are crucial to prevent siphoning and backflow. The discharge can be routed to a holding tank or directly overboard where permitted.
  • Recommended Paper: The manual recommends using single-ply toilet paper to prevent clogs and ensure smooth operation. Hard objects or stringy substances should not be thrown into the toilet to avoid damage.
  • Safety Precautions: Users are advised to shut off seacocks before leaving the boat unattended to prevent potential flooding. When operating, the valve handle must be fully in the "FLUSH" or "DRY" position.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of the Raritan PHII Marine Toilet.

  • Lubrication: Applying Super Lube® (#SL1CC) to the piston rod and other moving parts is recommended every spring and fall, or more frequently with heavy use, to prolong the life of the Piston Shaft Seal and ensure smooth operation.
  • Cleaning: The manual advises against using cleaners containing ammonia, ethyl acetate, phosphoric acid, or concentrated chlorine bleach, as these can damage the toilet. Instead, a bio-enzymatic toilet bowl cleaner like C.P. (available from Raritan Engineering) is recommended to keep the bowl clean and fresh-smelling.
  • Odor Control: For toilets using salt or brackish water, installing a Knocks Out Odor Kit (#KO2) can help reduce "rotten egg" smells. An In-Line Strainer (#163000) can also help minimize odors and prevent clogging by filtering intake water.
  • Winterizing: Proper winterization is essential to prevent damage from freezing. This involves closing seacocks, draining hoses, connecting short hoses to the toilet, and flushing nontoxic antifreeze through the system until it discharges from the toilet. The antifreeze should remain in the toilet until recommissioning. Holding tanks, seacocks, and treatment systems require separate winterization.
  • Recommissioning: After winterization, the toilet should be recommissioned by lubricating the piston rod, flushing out the antifreeze with clean water, reconnecting hoses, opening seacocks, and checking for leaks.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common issues such as water not being drawn in, leaks around the piston shaft, odors, water accumulating too fast in the bowl, not enough water to rinse, water rising in the bowl, and electric motor laboring or hard manual pumping. Solutions include checking for stuck balls, debris, worn O-rings, improper valve positioning, clogged vents, and obstructed discharge lines.
  • Parts Replacement: Overhaul kits and individual parts are available for repair. The manual includes detailed instructions and diagrams for replacing parts, such as the flapper valves and inlet valve body, emphasizing correct orientation for proper function. For example, the flapper valves must be oriented correctly, and the inlet valve body (#1203BW) must be positioned as shown in diagrams for proper operation.
  • Inlet Valve Maintenance: To clean or dismantle the inlet valve, the inlet valve cap (#1204B) should be unscrewed approximately five revolutions. The entire assembly (down to part #1203BW) can then be gently lifted. After cleaning, the gasket (#1202) should be replaced if necessary, and Super Lube applied to the O-ring area. Reassembly requires ensuring the alignment post of the 1200CW housing protrudes between the limiting stops of the 1209BW, allowing for a 1/4 turn from "Dry" to "Flush."
  • Visual Inspection: Regular visual inspections are recommended for leaks at toilet and hose connections, condition of hose clamps, hoses, seacocks, wires, and connections, and the in-line strainer.

The Raritan PHII Marine Toilet is designed for durability and ease of service, with clear instructions for both routine care and more advanced repairs, ensuring a long and reliable service life on board.
