Overview

The Raritan PH Superflush is a marine toilet designed for efficient flushing and ease of installation, particularly as an upgrade from other competitive models. It combines the powerful pumping action of the legendary PHII pump with a more universal and sleek base, and includes a slow-close seat for added convenience.

Function Description

The PH Superflush operates by drawing water for flushing and discharging waste. It features a handle that can be positioned for either "FLUSH" (drawing water and discharging bowl contents) or "DRY" (discharging bowl contents only). This dual-action handle allows for control over water usage during flushing. The toilet is designed to be compatible with Raritan's Electroscan® and Purasan® Waste Treatment Systems, both of which are U.S. Coast Guard Certified Type I flow-thru Marine Sanitation Devices (MSD) and/or holding tanks.

Usage Features

The toilet's operation is straightforward, with the handle serving as the primary control. For flushing, the handle is pushed down to the "FLUSH" position, drawing water into the bowl and discharging its contents. For dry operation, the handle is moved to the "DRY" position, discharging only the bowl contents without adding water. This feature is useful for conserving water or when preparing the toilet for storage. The slow-close seat is a standard inclusion, enhancing user comfort and preventing slamming.

For installations below the waterline, proper venting loops are crucial to prevent flooding. These loops must be positioned a minimum of 4 inches (10 cm) above the waterline at the boat's greatest angle of heel. All hose connections below the waterline should be double-clamped for security. It is also advised to keep both intake and discharge seacocks closed when the toilet is not in use to prevent accidental flooding.

The PH Superflush is designed to be versatile in its installation, accommodating both above and below waterline setups. The mounting surface should be flat and solid, with sufficient room for routing hoses and ensuring the toilet seat can open properly.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and proper functioning of the PH Superflush.

Cleaning: Only use cleaners that do not contain ammonia, ethyl acetate, phosphoric acid, or concentrated chlorine bleach, as these can damage the toilet. Raritan recommends using C.P. a bio-enzymatic toilet bowl cleaner (1PCP22) to keep the bowl clean and fresh-smelling.

Routine Inspection: Periodically check for leaks at toilet and hose connections, inspect hose clamps, seacocks, and wiring connections. An In-Line Strainer (if installed) should also be checked.

Lubrication: The piston rod should be lubricated regularly with Super Lube®. For optimal performance, the piston shaft seal should be lubricated every spring and fall, or more frequently if the head is used frequently. Raritan's Super Lube (#SL1CC) is recommended for this purpose.

Odor Control: If a "rotten egg" smell associated with using salt or brackish water develops, the Raritan Knocks Out Odors Kit (#KO2) can be used. This kit enables the use of Cleans Potties (#1PCP22), which deodorizes the bowl and lubricates internal parts.

Inlet Valve/Handle Maintenance: To clean out debris or dismantle the inlet valve, it's necessary to access the inlet valve spring and ball. This involves unscrewing the inlet valve cap approximately five revolutions with channel type pliers. The entire handle assembly can then be gently lifted upwards for cleaning. When reassembling, ensure the alignment post of the housing protrudes between the two limiting stops in the underside of the handle to ensure proper inlet valve positioning and a maximum 1/4 turn from "Dry" to "Flush." Replace the gasket if necessary and apply Super Lube to the O-ring area of the inlet valve body.

Winterization: Improper winter layup is a common cause of marine toilet failures. To winterize, first close the intake and discharge seacocks, then disconnect and drain the intake and discharge hoses. Connect short hoses to the toilet's intake and discharge ports, placing one bucket under the discharge hose and another with nontoxic antifreeze under the intake hose. Flush the toilet until antifreeze begins to discharge, ensuring it remains in the toilet until recommissioning. This process protects both the intake and discharge sides of the pump. Pouring antifreeze directly into the bowl only protects the discharge. Holding tanks, seacocks, and treatment systems require independent winterization according to their manufacturers' instructions.

Recommissioning: After winterization, lubricate the piston rod with Super Lube®. Flush the antifreeze out of the toilet using buckets of clean water, disposing of the antifreeze properly. Reconnect all hoses, open both seacocks, and check for leaks with several test flushes.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues such as water not being drawn in (check seacock, intake valve, piston O-ring, inlet valve), water rising in the bowl (vented loop, joker valve), water accumulating too fast (flapper valve, joker valve), piston shaft seal wear (cartridge seal), odors (ventilation, intake water foul, back pressure, permeated discharge hose), and not enough water to rinse the bowl (intake valve, debris around intake/discharge check balls, scored pump housing, clogged intake line or strainer). Each issue has specific steps for diagnosis and resolution, often involving inspection or replacement of specific parts.
