STERN DRIVE MECHANICS
e engine transmits rotational energy to the drive sha at the
engine coupler. Once engine output energy is transferred to the
drive sha , it undergoes a ratio change determined by the gear case.
is converts the revolutions of your engine to applicable rotations
of the propeller. From here, the propeller sha turns in accordance
with the energy ratio determined by the gear case, and rotates the
propeller sha . Your drive hub and other prop hardware keeps the
propeller in contact with the prop sha allowing the propeller to
spin without coming o the sha .
e stern drive uses water pickup feeds normally found on the port
and starboard face of the stern drive. ese holes allow raw water
to be drawn up into the stern drive and pass through the transom to
the engine where it can be used as coolant. Used water as regulated
by the thermostat is transferred back to the stern drive and emitted
at a vent above the propeller, or through the prop sha , depending
on the engine and drive manufacturer. Refer to your stern drive
owner’s manual for details on the location and operation of the
components.
