Overview

This document describes the Reznor Model SC gas-fired, indoor, commercial/industrial, separated-combustion duct furnace.

Function Description:

The Reznor Model SC is a gas-fired duct furnace designed for heating commercial and industrial spaces. It is intended for indoor installation and utilizes a separated-combustion system, meaning that air for combustion is drawn from outside the building, and flue gases are discharged to the outside atmosphere. This design makes the unit suitable for environments with dust or corrosive fumes, as it prevents these contaminants from entering the combustion process. The furnace is designed to be connected to an external air handler, forming part of a customized air handling system. It provides heated air to a duct system, which then distributes it throughout the space. The unit is certified by ANSI Z83 family of standards for safe usage in industrial/commercial settings, including makeup air applications for corridor pressurization in commercial buildings. It is not certified for residential heating equipment.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Unit Sizes: Available in ten sizes with inputs ranging from 100,000 to 400,000 BTUh.
  • Thermal Efficiency: 80% thermal efficient.
  • Voltage: Standard 115V supply. Options for 115/1/60, 208/1/60, 230/1/60, and 460/1/60 voltage are available.
  • Burner: Aluminized-steel burner with SST insert. An optional 409 SST burner is available.
  • Heat Exchanger: Aluminized-steel heat exchanger. An optional 409 SST heat exchanger is available.
  • Ignition: Intermittent spark pilot. An optional intermittent spark pilot with timed lockout is available.
  • Gas Valve: Single-stage combination gas valve is standard. Options include two-stage combination gas valve (with or without unit-mounted ductstat), and electronic modulation with various control options (ductstat, remote temperature selector, Maxitrol signal conditioner, or DDC interface).
  • Fuel Type: Natural gas or propane.
  • Venter Motor: 115V venter motor with SST shaft.
  • Controls: Fan control and high limit safety control, 24V control transformer.
  • Airflow: The unit requires specific CFM ranges depending on the unit size and desired temperature rise. Airflow can be adjusted by removing finger baffles.
    • Air Volume with Finger Baffles (CFM): Ranges from 820-1480 (100k BTUh) to 3290-5925 (400k BTUh).
    • Air Volume without Finger Baffles (CFM): Ranges from 3700-1080 (100k BTUh) to 14815-1240 (400k BTUh).
  • Temperature Rise: Designed for a temperature rise of 50-90°F (20-75°F without finger baffles).
  • Gas Connection: 1/2 inch for natural gas, 1/2 inch for propane.
  • Electrical: Full load amps (120V) is 1.9A. Unit control amps (24V) is 0.83A.
  • Dimensions (approximate for 100k BTUh unit):
    • Width (B): 22-15/32 inches (571 mm)
    • Depth (D): 12-1/2 inches (318 mm)
    • Height (A): 32-1/4 inches (819 mm)
  • Weights (approximate for 100k BTUh unit):
    • Net Weight: 158 lbs (72 kg)
    • Shipping Weight: 184 lbs (83 kg)
  • Clearances to Combustibles:
    • Top: 6 inches (152 mm)
    • Control side: 6 inches (152 mm) + width of unit

    • Bottom (to combustibles): 6 inches (152 mm)
    • Bottom (to noncombustibles): 0 inches (0 mm)

Usage Features:

  • Separated Combustion System: Draws combustion air from outside and vents flue gases outside, making it suitable for dusty or corrosive environments. This system is defined by ANSI standards and requires specific vent cap(s) and combustion air/flue gas connections.
  • Customized Air Handling: Can be packaged with a blower unit to create a tailored air handling system.
  • Flexible Installation: Burner and control access can be specified for either the left-hand or right-hand side (facing airstream). Standard airflow can be reversed by changing the direction of heat exchanger air baffles.
  • Elevation Options: Factory-installed options for installation elevations from 0-2000 feet up to 6001-7000 feet.
  • Control Options: A wide range of factory-installed and field-installed options for gas valves and thermostats, including single-stage, two-stage, and electronic modulation with various interfaces (ductstat, room thermostat, remote temperature selector, DDC interface).
  • Vent Terminal Options: Field-installed options for vertical or horizontal vent terminals.
  • Safety Features: High- and low-pressure gas pressure safety switches (field-installed option BP4), air flow pressure proving switch (field-installed option BW1), and photoelectric air duct smoke detector (field-installed option SA1).
  • Drip Pan/Bottom Panel: Options for aluminized-steel or 409 SST drip pan/bottom panel.
  • Locking Covers: Available for various thermostat options (CL1, CL22, CL33).
  • Disconnect Switches: Indoor disconnect switches available for US and Canada.
  • Condensate Drain Flange: Field-installed option CS1.

Maintenance Features:

  • Ductwork Requirements: Joints where ducts attach to the furnace must be securely sealed to prevent air leakage into the burner rack area, which can lead to poor combustion, performance, pilot problems, and shortened heat exchanger life.
  • Airflow Management: Adjustments to ductwork are necessary to obtain a temperature rise and static pressure within the ranges specified on the heater rating plate. The air distribution must be even over the entire heat exchanger.
  • Finger Baffles: The unit includes finger baffles, which can be removed by a qualified service agency to achieve higher CFM conversions, as detailed in the technical data.
  • Installation and Service: Installation and service must be performed by a qualified installer, service agency, or the gas supplier, in accordance with local building codes, national fuel gas codes (NFPA/ANSI Z223.1 in the US, CSA B149.1 in Canada), and manufacturer's instructions.
  • Chlorine Hazards: The presence of chlorine vapors in combustion air can cause corrosion. Care must be taken to separate these vapors from the combustion process through proper unit location and exhaust systems. The SC series is not designed or approved for use in atmospheres containing flammable or highly chlorinated vapors.
  • Venting System: Requires installation of the combustion air/vent system ordered with the unit (CC2 or CC6 options). Do not intermix different vent system parts from different manufacturers. All separated-combustion, power-vented units must be equipped with both combustion air and exhaust piping to the outdoors.
  • Continuous Product Improvement: Reznor reserves the right to alter design, construction, dimensions, weights, etc., of equipment information shown in the document at any time.
