Overview

The document is an Owner's Guide and Installation Instructions for Rheem XWELL™ Electric Storage Water Heaters, covering models XC-10, XC-15, XC-30, XS-20, and XS-30. It provides comprehensive information for both householders and installers regarding the safe operation, installation, and maintenance of these water heaters.

Function Description:

The Rheem XWELL™ water heater is designed for indoor installation and heats water using an electric immersion heating unit. Temperature control is managed by an automatic thermostat. The system is designed for connection to a mains pressure water supply, allowing hot water to be supplied to multiple outlets. The vitreous enamel lined steel cylinder is protected against corrosion by a sacrificial anode and insulated with high-density polyurethane foam to minimize heat loss and enhance efficiency. Automatic safety controls are integrated to ensure safe and efficient operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models Covered: XC-10, XC-15, XC-30, XS-20, XS-30.
  • Installation: Indoor installation only.
  • Power Supply: 220-240 V a.c., 50-60 Hz single phase.
  • Temperature Control: User-adjustable thermostat from 10°C to 70°C. Factory setting is 70°C.
  • Pressure Relief Valve: Supplied with an 800 kPa pressure rating. A pressure limiting valve is required if mains supply pressure exceeds 640 kPa.
  • Water Connections: G 1/2 B for both hot water outlet (red marking) and cold water inlet (blue marking).
  • Ingress Protection: IP24.
  • Water Chemistry Limitations (for warranty):
    • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) > 600 mg/L (cylinder not covered).
    • Saturation Index (SI) < -2.0 or > +0.8 (incoloy corrosion resistant heating unit not covered).
    • Chlorides > 200 mg/L (incoloy corrosion resistant heating unit not covered).
  • Dimensions and Weights (Approximate):
    • XC-10: 10 Litres, 8 kg empty, 18 kg full. Height including fittings: 371 mm. Width: 363 mm. Depth: 251 mm.
    • XC-15: 15 Litres, 9 kg empty, 24 kg full. Height including fittings: 371 mm. Width: 363 mm. Depth: 318 mm.
    • XC-30: 30 Litres, 14 kg empty, 44 kg full. Height including fittings: 460 mm. Width: 447 mm. Depth: 380 mm.
    • XS-20: 20 Litres, 13 kg empty, 33 kg full. Height including fittings: 306 mm. Width: 674 mm. Depth: 278 mm.
    • XS-30: 30 Litres, 17 kg empty, 47 kg full. Height including fittings: 346 mm. Width: 760 mm. Depth: 318 mm.
  • Mounting: Wall-mounted with water connections on the underside. Requires specific clearances: minimum 30 mm from ceiling for XC/XS models, minimum 500 mm from right-hand side to wall/obstruction for XS models.
  • Pipe Work: Must withstand 800 kPa water pressure and 70°C water temperature. Disconnection unions are required at the inlet of the pressure relief valve and hot water outlet.

Usage Features:

  • Temperature Adjustment: A user-adjustable Temperature Dial allows increasing water temperature by turning clockwise and decreasing by turning anti-clockwise. Setting the dial at the " " mark prevents heating, while "MAX" heats water to 70°C.
  • Indicator Light: The Temperature Dial incorporates a white light:
    • Pulsing white light: Indicates heating mode (heating unit is on).
    • Steady white light: Indicates ready mode (water temperature reached thermostat setting, heating unit is off).
  • Scald Risk: The water heater can deliver water at scalding temperatures. Users are advised to check water temperature before use. Installation of an approved temperature limiting device in hot water pipework to bathrooms/ensuites is recommended and may be required by regulations to reduce scald risk.
  • Turning On/Off:
    • To Turn Off: Switch off electrical supply at the isolating switch (if installed) or switchboard, and close the cold water isolation valve at the inlet.
    • To Turn On: Open the cold water isolation valve fully, then switch on the electrical supply.
  • Holiday Mode: For short absences (1-2 nights), leave the water heater on. For longer periods, switch it off at the isolating switch to conserve energy. Reheating will take time after switching back on.
  • Hydrogen Gas Dissipation (for high TDS water): If the water supply has TDS > 600 mg/L and the heater hasn't been used for two or more weeks, open a hot tap to safely vent flammable hydrogen gas that may accumulate.

Maintenance Features:

  • User Maintenance (Every Six Months):
    • Pressure Relief Valve: Operate the easing lever gently to clear deposits and ensure the valve and drain line are not blocked. Ensure discharge water is directed to a drain. If water doesn't flow freely, contact Rheem Service.
    • Safety Device (ELCB - on selected models): Test by pushing the "Test" button (A). The indicator light (B) should turn off, and the reset button (C) should pop up. Reset by pushing button (C). If the indicator light remains on/off after testing/resetting, call for service.
  • Major Service (Every Four Years - Mandatory):
    • Pressure Relief Valve: Replace at intervals not exceeding four years (more frequently in areas with high water deposits).
    • Anode: Inspect and replace if depleted. Must be replaced within four years of this service.
    • Electric Heating Unit: Check for excessive calcium build-up or corrosion and replace if necessary.
    • General Inspection: Visually check for potential problems and inspect all connections.
    • Note: Major service and component replacements (anode, PRV) are not covered by Rheem warranty and will incur a charge. Only genuine replacement parts should be used.
  • Draining the Water Heater:
    • Switch off electrical supply and close the cold water isolation valve.
    • Open a hot water tap.
    • Ensure a drain line is attached to the pressure relief valve outlet and operate the lever gently.
    • Alternatively, if draining is slow: close the PRV lever, open the cold water isolation valve, run hot water until cold, close hot tap, close cold water isolation valve, undo PRV, attach a hose to the inlet, and disconnect the union at the hot water outlet.
    • Warning: Exercise care as discharged water can be very hot.
  • Troubleshooting ("Save A Service Call"): Provides guidance on common issues like no water flow, insufficient hot water, and pressure relief valve running (normal operation, continuous dribble, steady flows, continuous flow of very hot water/steam). Advises checking isolation valves, electrical supply, thermostat setting, and operating the PRV lever. For persistent issues, contact Rheem Service.
