Overview

The RICON S-Series Personal Use Wheelchair Lift is designed to provide wheelchair access to personal vans, offering smooth and safe entry and exit for users. It can lift up to 800 pounds (364 kilograms) and is operated by either the wheelchair occupant or a trained attendant. The lift features a powerful electro-hydraulic pump with a built-in manual backup pump, allowing for manual raising or lowering in case of electrical power loss.

Function Description:

The lift operates through control switches to unfold from the vehicle (deploy), allowing the user to board the large non-skid platform. The operator then uses the controls to gently lower the platform to the ground. After the user departs, the platform is raised and folded back into the vehicle (stowed). Some models offer a split platform that folds when stowed, providing easy vehicle access through the lift.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Load Capacity: Up to 800 pounds (364 kilograms).
  • Power System: Electro-hydraulic pump with a manual backup pump.
  • Control System: Hand-held, hard-wired remote control pendant with dual-position rocker switches (DEPLOY, STOW, UP, DOWN). An alternate spring-loaded handrail switch is available for platform occupants to operate UP and DOWN functions.
  • Safety Features:
    • Interlock system to prevent operation if unsafe conditions are present (e.g., vehicle not parked with parking brake ON, vehicle on sloped ground). An interlock indicator light shows system status.
    • Outer rollstop to prevent unintentional rolling off the platform.
    • Inboard rollstop (bridgeplate) to prevent slow, inadvertent rolling off the platform during lift operation.
    • Circuit breakers for the optional door operator and the control system, designed to interrupt electrical power in case of a short circuit.
    • Warning labels and symbols affixed to the lift.

Usage Features:

  • Deployment: Push and hold the DEPLOY switch until the platform completely unfolds and stops at floor level.
  • Lowering: Push and hold the DOWN switch until the lift contacts the ground and the rollstop opens completely.
  • Raising: Push and hold the UP switch until the platform rises and stops automatically at vehicle floor level.
  • Stowing: Push and hold the STOW switch until the platform folds completely into the vehicle.
  • Manual Operation: In case of electrical power failure, the lift can be operated manually using the backup pump handle and release valve. The manual operation involves lifting the inboard rollstop to override the "Sto-Loc" feature, then using the pump handle to raise or lower the platform. The pump release valve is used to control lowering.
  • User Positioning: Wheelchair occupants should FACE OUTWARD when entering or exiting the vehicle. Wheelchair brakes must be locked before moving the platform.
  • Vehicle Interlock: The lift is designed to operate only when the vehicle manufacturer's interlock circuitry is activated.

Maintenance Features:

  • Daily Safety Check: Before each use, inspect all functions for proper operation, unusual noises or movements, verify vehicle interlock is working, ensure no interfering objects are present, and check general appearance and lubrication.
  • Two-Week Safety Check: In addition to daily checks, listen for abnormal noises, inspect the underside of the vehicle, verify the control pendant and cable connectors are tight, inspect electrical wiring for frayed wires or loose connectors, place the vehicle in NON-INTERLOCK mode to test the lift, and verify decals are properly affixed and legible.
  • Six-Month Safety Check (or 1750 cycles):
    • Verify handrail fasteners are tight.
    • Clean the lift with mild soap and water, wipe dry, and apply a light oil to prevent rust. Remove excess oil.
    • Spray penetrating oil (e.g., Curtisol® Red Grease 88167 or WD-40®) where specified in the service manual, removing excess grease.
    • Verify vehicle mounting and support points are undamaged and bolts are tight.
    • Verify arm pins are properly installed, free from damage, and locked.
    • Verify platform moves freely without binding or wobbling.
    • Verify bridgeplate operates without binding, deploys fully at floor level, and rests flat against the baseplate.
    • Verify front rollstop opens completely on ground contact and closes/locks when the platform leaves the ground.
    • Check hydraulic fluid level at the FULL mark when the platform is at ground level (add Texaco 01554 Aircraft Hydraulic Oil or equivalent U.S. mil spec H5606G fluid if needed).
    • Verify no hydraulic fluid leaks and the manual release valve is closed.
  • Annual Safety Check (or 3500 cycles): Must be performed by a Ricon authorized dealer.
    • Check the hydraulic cylinder for leaks.
    • Inspect hydraulic hoses for damage.
    • Verify all fittings are tight.
  • Maintenance Information: Additional detailed maintenance information is available in the S-Series Personal Use Service manual (part number 32DSSP02), accessible from Ricon's website for authorized dealers.
  • Warranty: Ricon provides a five-year limited warranty, covering repair or replacement of parts due to defective material or workmanship. Labor costs for specified parts are covered for one year, and lift power train parts for five years. The warranty is void if the product is installed or maintained by unauthorized personnel or modified without written authorization. Regular inspections by a Ricon authorized service technician at least every six months are recommended.
