Overview

The RIDGID Press Snap Soil Pipe Cutter is a specialized tool designed to efficiently cut No-Hub and service weight cast iron soil pipe ranging from 1.5" to 4" in diameter. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for its safe and proper operation, maintenance, and service.

Function Description:

The Press Snap Soil Pipe Cutter attaches to any RIDGID Standard Series Press Tool (such as the CT400, 320-E, RP 330-B, and RP 330-C) to perform quick and clean cuts on cast iron soil pipe. It utilizes a unique hooking mechanism that simplifies and speeds up the chain attachment process, reducing setup time. Cuts are typically completed in a single cycle of the press tool with minimal force required from the operator, enabling repeated cuts to be made quickly. The tool is designed to provide a fixed force for cutting, which limits its application to specific pipe types and sizes.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Capacity: 1.5" to 4" No-Hub and service weight cast iron soil pipe.
  • Weight (not including press tool): 8.6 lbs (3.9 kg).
  • Overall Length: 10".
  • Length beyond Press Tool when installed: 7".
  • Compatibility: Compatible with all RIDGID Standard Series Press Tools (CT400, 320-E, RP 330-B, RP 330-C).
  • Catalog Numbers:
    • 34403: Press Snap Soil Pipe Cutter Kit (Weight: 12 lbs / 5.4 kg)
    • 34678: Case, Press Snap Cutter (Weight: 3.4 lbs / 1.5 kg)

Usage Features:

  • Easy Setup: The unique hooking mechanism makes attaching the chain to the pipe easier and quicker.
  • Minimal Operator Force: Cuts are typically made in a single cycle of the press tool, requiring minimal force from the operator.
  • Quick Repeated Cuts: The design allows for rapid, repeated cuts.
  • Size Adjustment: The cutter features a two-position size adjustment. The position closest to the press tool is used for 1.5", 2", and 4" pipes, while the position away from the press tool is for 3" pipes. Adjustment is made by pulling out a clevis pin and moving the adjustment block.
  • Calibration (for 320-E Press Tool): When used with a 320-E Press Tool, the cutter requires calibration. This involves turning the tool ON, allowing LEDs to blink and beep, and then completing one tool cycle without pipe to set the proper calibration.
  • Ram Retraction Check: Before cutting, operators must confirm that the ram is fully retracted. If the cutter wheel is visible past the sideplate, the ram is not fully retracted and needs a complete tool cycle to retract.
  • Chain Wrapping: The chain must be wrapped snugly around the pipe at the desired cut point, and the nearest chain pin placed into the chain hooks. Marking the appropriate pin for a given pipe size can save time on subsequent cuts.
  • Cutting Cycle: The cutting cycle typically takes between 4-8 seconds, depending on the press tool. Once the chain tightens and the tool locks on, it will automatically complete the cut, and releasing the switch will not stop the process.
  • Pipe Preparation: Before cutting, the pipe should be drained if in service, and cleaned of mud, corrosion, or other coatings to ensure quality cuts and prevent damage to cutter wheels.
  • Work Area Safety: Operators must ensure the work area is clean, well-lit, and clear of bystanders. Loose pipe should be restrained to prevent it from being thrown when cut.
  • Handling Variations: The manual addresses variations in operation due to different press tools. For RP 330 press tools, the ram needs to be fully extended and retracted after each cut, requiring two tool cycles. For 320-E press tools, an alarm after a cut indicates a need for recalibration.
  • Troubleshooting Cuts: The manual provides solutions for instances where a cut is not made in a single cycle, such as ensuring full ram retraction, tight chain placement, or repeating the cut for thicker-walled pipe.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Operation Inspection: Before each use, a thorough inspection is required. This includes removing the cutter from the press tool, cleaning the cutter and chain, and checking for proper assembly, completeness, broken/bent/binding parts, excessive corrosion/wear, smooth movement of ram, chain, hooks, and linkages, and readability of warning labels.
  • Chain Inspection: The chain should be inspected for signs of overload or damage, ensuring no significant gaps between plates. Damaged chains should be replaced.
  • Cutter Wheel Inspection: Cutter wheels should be checked for wear and damage, as worn wheels can increase cut force and reduce cut quality.
  • Lubrication: Pivot points and the chain should be lubricated with a light oil as needed, with any excess oil wiped off.
  • Press Tool Inspection: The press tool and any other equipment used with the cutter should also be inspected according to their respective instructions.
  • Damage Protocol: If any problems are found during inspection, the soil pipe cutter should not be used until corrected.
  • Service and Repair: The manual emphasizes that improper service or repair can make the tool unsafe to operate, implying that service should be performed by qualified personnel using identical replacement parts to maintain safety.

Safety Information:

The manual includes extensive safety warnings and instructions, using safety alert symbols (DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION, NOTICE) to highlight potential hazards. Key safety rules include:

  • Personal Protective Equipment: Always wear eye protection (safety glasses with side shields or goggles).
  • Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean, well-lit, and free of bystanders. Avoid operating in explosive atmospheres.
  • Tool Use and Care: Do not force the tool. Use the correct tool for the application. Store idle tools out of reach of children. Maintain tools properly.
  • Crushing Hazard: Keep fingers and hands away from the Press Snap cutter during the cutting cycle to prevent crushing, fracturing, or amputation.
  • Flying Debris: Stand clear of the pipe during cutting, as pieces of pipe can be thrown with considerable force, causing striking or eye injuries.
  • Read Manuals: Always read and understand the operator's manual for both the Press Snap cutter and the press tool before operation.
  • Tool Compatibility: Only use a RIDGID Standard Series Press Tool with the Press Snap Soil Pipe Cutter to avoid damage or injury.
