Overview

The RIDGID Soil Pipe Cutters are a series of robust tools designed for efficiently cutting various types of soil pipes, including cast iron, concrete, and clay. These cutters operate by tightening a chain equipped with cutter wheels around the pipe until it breaks. The manual details several models: the 226 In-Place Soil Pipe Cutter, the 206 and 246 Soil Pipe Cutters, and the 276 Soil Pipe Cutter, each offering specific features and capabilities tailored for different applications and pipe types.

Function Description:

The primary function of these tools is to cut soil pipes by applying pressure via a chain of cutter wheels. The chain is wrapped around the pipe, and a tightening mechanism (ratchet handle or adjusting screw) is used to gradually increase the tension until the pipe fractures cleanly. This method is effective for both in-place and loose pipe sections.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models and Capacities:

    • 226 In-Place Soil Pipe Cutter: Cuts 1½"–6" (50–150 mm) pipe. With one chain extension, it can cut up to 8" (200 mm) pipe, and up to 15" (375 mm) clay pipe.
    • 206 Soil Pipe Cutter: Cuts 1½"–6" (50–150 mm) pipe. With one chain extension, it can cut up to 8" (200 mm) pipe, and up to 15" (375 mm) clay pipe.
    • 246 Soil Pipe Cutter: Cuts 1½"–6" (50–150 mm) pipe. With one chain extension, it can cut up to 8" (200 mm) pipe, and up to 15" (375 mm) clay pipe. This model is supplied with a larger chain compared to the 206, 226, and 276.
    • 276 Soil Pipe Cutter: Cuts 1½"–6" (50–150 mm) pipe. With one chain extension, it can cut up to 8" (200 mm) pipe, and up to 15" (375 mm) clay pipe.
  • Material/Size Compatibility (Standard Length Chain):

    • Clay pipe: 1½"–6"
    • Concrete pipe: 4"–6"
    • Class 22 water main: 4" (only with 246 model)
    • Extra heavy-duty cast iron soil pipe: 2"–5" (only with 246 model)
    • Service weight cast iron solid pipe: 1½"–6"
    • No hub cast iron soil pipe: 1½"–6"
  • Weight:

    • 206: 18 lb (8.2 kg)
    • 226: 18 lb (8.2 kg)
    • 246: 25 lb (11.3 kg)
    • 276: 23¾ lb (11.7 kg)
  • Chain Extension Assemblies:

    • 33665 (for 206/226/276): 3.5 lb (1.6 kg)
    • 34570 (for 246): 3.5 lb (1.6 kg)
    • Note: Only one chain extension is recommended, except for clay pipe up to 15".

Usage Features:

  • 226 In-Place Soil Pipe Cutter:

    • Compact design (17" long) ideal for limited spaces.
    • Removable handle for use in tight areas; can be positioned in four ways.
    • Feedscrew with a hand knob for fast adjustment.
    • Operated with a 15" long ½" drive ratchet (supplied) or any ½" drive ratchet or 15/16" wrench.
    • Unique hooking mechanism for easier chain attachment.
    • Patented design, including U.S. Patent 6,141,876.
  • 206 and 246 Soil Pipe Cutters:

    • Utilize an integral ratchet handle centered on the pipe, minimizing trench width requirements.
    • Unique hooking mechanism for easier chain attachment.
    • The 246 model is specifically designed for cutting 4" class 22 water main and 2"–5" extra heavy-duty soil pipe due to its larger chain.
  • 276 Soil Pipe Cutter:

    • Designed for single-stroke cutting, allowing for quick, repeated cuts.
    • Features an adjusting screw and jaws for precise pipe engagement.
  • General Usage Tips:

    • Chain Extension: Chain extension assemblies increase the cutting capacity for larger pipes (up to 8" for most types, and up to 15" for clay pipe).
    • Clean Cuts: For cleaner cuts, mark the pipe by tightening the chain, loosening it, rotating the pipe/tool, and repeating several times before final tightening and breaking.
    • Work Area Safety: Always ensure the work area is clear, well-lit, and stable. Keep bystanders away as pipe pieces can be thrown with considerable force.
    • Personal Protective Equipment: Always wear safety glasses with side shields or goggles.
    • Handle Extensions: Do not use handle extensions (cheaters) or power tools to activate the cutter, as this can cause serious injury or tool damage.
    • Pipe Preparation: Drain pipes if in service, clean mud/corrosion, and ensure adequate clearance around the pipe for the chain. For loose pipes, support them on stands or wood blocks to protect cutter wheels. Restrain short sections of pipe to prevent them from being thrown.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Operation Inspection: Before each use, thoroughly inspect the soil pipe cutter.
    • Cleanliness: Remove all dirt, oil, grease, and debris. A wire brush can be used for the chain.
    • Assembly and Completeness: Check for proper assembly, missing, broken, bent, or binding parts.
    • Corrosion and Wear: Inspect for excessive corrosion and wear.
    • Movement: Ensure smooth, free movement of the ratchet, screws, chain, and linkages.
    • Warning Labels: Verify the presence and readability of all warning labels.
    • Chain and Cutter Wheels: Inspect the chain for significant gaps between plates or other damage; replace if necessary. Check cutter wheels for wear and damage, as worn wheels increase cut force and reduce cut quality.
  • Lubrication: Lubricate pivot points and the chain with a light lubricating oil as needed, wiping off any excess.
  • Storage: Store idle tools out of reach of children and untrained users.
  • Repairs: Have tools serviced by qualified personnel using identical replacement parts to maintain safety.

Lifetime Warranty:

RIDGID Soil Pipe Cutters are covered by a full lifetime warranty against material defects and workmanship. This warranty ensures that the tool will be repaired or replaced if it fails due to such defects, for the lifetime of the tool. However, it does not cover failures due to misuse, abuse, normal wear and tear, or incidental/consequential damages.
