Overview

This document is the operator's manual for the RIDGID R2610 Random Orbit Sander. It is a double-insulated, variable-speed power tool designed for sanding various surfaces.

Function Description:

The RIDGID R2610 Random Orbit Sander is engineered for dependability, ease of operation, and operator safety. Its primary function is to sand surfaces using a random orbit motion, which combines orbital and turning movements. This overlapping sanding action provides fast cutting and excellent sanding results, helping to eliminate sanding scratches. The tool is suitable for a range of applications, including sanding wood, wood products, steel, and removing rust from steel surfaces. It features an integrated brake pad to prevent pad "overspin" when applying or removing the sander from a work surface, further reducing the risk of scratches.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Sanding Disc Diameter: 6 in. (15.2 cm)
  • Orbit Diameter: 1/8 in. or 1/4 in. (3.2 mm or 6.4 mm)
  • No Load Speed: 4,000 - 10,000/min (Revolutions, strokes, surface speed, or orbits per minute)
  • Input: 120 Volts, 60 Hz, AC only, 3.8 Amps
  • Net Weight: 6 lbs. (2.7 kg)
  • Insulation: Double Insulated (Class II Construction), eliminating the need for a three-wire grounded power cord.
  • Power Cord: The manual provides a chart for recommended extension cord wire gauge sizes based on length and amperage, emphasizing the use of a 16 A.W.G. cord for lengths up to 50 feet and advising against cords exceeding 100 feet.

Usage Features:

  • Trigger Switch: The sander is equipped with a conveniently located trigger switch for turning the tool on and off.
  • Lock-On Button: This feature allows the user to lock the trigger switch in the ON position for extended periods of operation, reducing user fatigue.
  • Variable Speed Dial: A dial located on the motor housing allows the user to adjust the sanding speed from 4,000 to 10,000 orbits per minute. Recommended speed settings are provided for different surface types and applications:
    • 1-3: plastic, plexiglass
    • 3-4: metal finishing, old paint removal
    • 5-6: wood/coarse and fine sanding
  • Dual Random Orbit Locking Button: This feature allows the user to choose between two orbit settings: 1/8 in. for a finer surface finish and 1/4 in. for an increased material removal rate. The orbit diameter is adjusted by pressing and holding the locking button while turning the backing pad.
  • Backing Pad: The sander uses a hook and loop backing pad, which allows for easy attachment and removal of sanding discs with Velcro® type backing material.
  • Dust Bag: A cloth dust bag is included for dust collection. It attaches to the blower exhaust and collects sanding dust drawn through the holes of the sanding disc, helping to keep the work area clean. The dust bag should be emptied frequently (every 10-15 minutes) during sanding and thoroughly cleaned after each use.
  • Vacuum Adaptor: For enhanced dust collection, a vacuum adaptor is provided, allowing the sander to be connected to a 1-1/4 in. or 2-1/4 in. diameter vacuum hose.
  • Ergonomic Handle: The sander is designed with an ergonomic handle for comfortable and easy handling, facilitating operation in different positions and angles.
  • Cord Retainer: A cord retainer is located at the rear of the dust bag holder to keep the power cord in place during use.

Maintenance Features:

  • General Cleaning: Users are advised to keep the tool and its handle dry, clean, and free from oil and grease. Clean cloths should be used for cleaning, and strong solvents, brake fluids, gasoline, or petroleum-based products should be avoided as they can damage plastic parts.
  • Brush Replacement: The manual provides detailed instructions for replacing the carbon brushes, which are normal wear items. It specifies checking for wear and replacing both brush assemblies if either has less than 1/4 inch of carbon remaining.
  • Lubrication: All bearings in the tool are pre-lubricated for the life of the tool under normal operating conditions, so no further lubrication is required.
  • Cord Inspection: Users are instructed to inspect tool cords periodically and have them repaired by an authorized service center if damaged.
  • Damaged Parts Check: Before further use, any damaged guard or other part should be carefully checked to ensure proper operation and repaired or replaced by an authorized service center.
  • Service: Tool service must be performed by qualified repair personnel using identical replacement parts to avoid the risk of shock or injury. The manual recommends returning the product to an authorized service center for repair.

The manual includes important safety rules, specific safety rules, and symbols to ensure safe operation and maintenance of the RIDGID R2610 Random Orbit Sander. It also provides warranty information, including a 3-year limited service warranty covering defects in workmanship, materials, and normal wear items.
