Do you have a question about the Ryobi P2890 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The RYOBI 18 Volt 1/2 Gallon Electrostatic Sprayer (P2809) is a battery-powered tool designed for both indoor and outdoor residential and commercial use. Its primary function is to apply disinfectants, insecticides, fungicides, weed killers, and fertilizers as an electrostatically charged mist, providing enhanced coverage and adhesion to surfaces.

Function Description:

The sprayer operates by creating an electrostatically charged mist, which allows for better coverage and adhesion of the sprayed solution. It features a pump-free spraying mechanism, where the battery-powered system continuously cycles fluid through the tank. The electrostatic function can be activated or deactivated via a dedicated switch. The sprayer is designed to be used with most consumer-grade disinfectants and home and garden chemicals.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Motor: 18 Volt DC
  • Tank Capacity: 1/2 Gallon (1.9 Liters)
  • Nozzle Settings: The 3-in-1 rotating nozzle offers three spray pattern settings:
    • Low coverage: 65 microns (TX-1.5)
    • Medium coverage: 85 microns (TG-0.4)
    • High coverage: 160 microns (TG-1)
  • Flash Point Requirement: For fire or explosion risk reduction, liquids with a flash point higher than 140°F (60°C) should be used.

Usage Features:

  • Electrostatic Function: The electrostatic switch allows users to turn the electrostatic mode ON or OFF. When activated, the sprayer produces a charged mist for improved application.
  • 3-in-1 Rotating Nozzle: Users can select from three distinct spray patterns by rotating the nozzle selector to suit different application needs.
  • Pump-Free Operation: The battery-powered design eliminates the need for manual pumping, ensuring continuous fluid circulation and consistent spraying.
  • Tank with Measurement Markings: The tank is marked for easy measurement of up to 1/2 gallon of liquid.
  • Anti-Static Strap: An anti-static strap is included and must be worn by the user during operation to dissipate any static charge that may build up on surfaces when the electrostatic function is enabled. This strap should make direct contact with the user's skin and can be worn underneath protective equipment if necessary. A replacement anti-static strap is also provided.
  • Nozzle Tool: A dedicated nozzle tool is included to assist with the removal and installation of nozzles and the threaded ring, ensuring a tight assembly to prevent leaks.
  • Battery Compatibility: The sprayer is designed for use only with specifically designated RYOBI 18V battery packs and chargers listed in the correlation supplement 987000-432.
  • Filling the Tank: The tank should be filled away from the sprayer, with the battery pack removed. Spills must be wiped up before reinserting the tank and battery. Liquids used should be as thin as water and not exceed the max fill line. Hot or boiling liquids, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol-based chemicals, powders, abrasive chemicals, caustic (alkali) or self-heating liquids should not be used.
  • Operating Tips:
    • Always ensure the spray area is well-ventilated and away from sparks or flames.
    • Avoid spraying on windy days to prevent accidental drift onto unintended objects.
    • Never point the sprayer nozzle at people or pets; always direct downwind.
    • For warmer weather, spraying in the early morning or late afternoon is recommended to minimize evaporation.
    • Do not smoke, eat, or drink while operating the sprayer.
    • Do not touch nozzles while the sprayer is in operation.
    • If the sprayer has trouble priming or won't spray, turn the nozzle selector dial to the largest micron setting to re-prime the pump.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning After Each Use: The sprayer must be thoroughly cleaned and drained after every use to prevent residue buildup and seizing of moving parts. This includes draining the tank, rinsing it with clean water (and mild household detergent if needed), and spraying until the tank is empty.
  • Nozzle Cleaning: If nozzles become clogged, the nozzle selector can be removed and soaked in warm, soapy water. For persistent clogs, individual nozzles can be removed, soaked, and blown out with pressurized air.
  • General Cleaning: Plastic parts should be cleaned with a clean, dry cloth, avoiding solvents, brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, or strong solvents, as these can damage the plastic.
  • Anti-Static Strap Replacement: Instructions are provided for removing and replacing the anti-static strap if it becomes disconnected or damaged. The electrostatic function must be turned off and the battery removed before performing this maintenance. The anti-static strap should not be worn during maintenance.
  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, inspect the entire product for damaged, missing, or loose parts (screws, nuts, bolts, caps, etc.). All fasteners and caps should be tightened securely.
  • Storage: Store the sprayer indoors in a secure, well-ventilated area with the fluid tank empty, in an upright position. Do not store it on its side.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting section to address common issues such as priming problems, improper spray, weak spray, or the unit shutting off prematurely, along with possible causes and solutions.

Safety Precautions:

  • Always wear eye protection with side shields or goggles (ANSI Z87.1 compliant) and a dust mask to protect eyes, skin, and lungs from spray drift.
  • Wear shoes with a leather sole when using the sprayer to help dissipate static charge. Avoid rubber-soled or insulating footwear.
  • Do not use the sprayer in flammable, explosive, or oxygen-rich environments.
  • Never spray flammable liquids like gasoline.
  • Do not spray toward electrical outlets.
  • Always remove the battery pack before filling the tank, assembling parts, making adjustments, cleaning, or storing the sprayer to prevent accidental starting.
  • Do not allow conductive or corrosive fluids to enter the battery pack.
  • Individuals with pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), internal pumps, or similar medical devices should not use this sprayer or enter the spray area.
  • Follow all chemical manufacturer's safety instructions and guidelines listed on the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and container labels.
  • Do not combine chemicals.
  • Keep bystanders and children at least 50 ft. away from the spray area.
