Overview

This document describes the Ryobi R18CHS20 and R18CHS22 cordless chainsaws, designed for outdoor use in domestic applications. These chainsaws are intended for cutting wood only, specifically branches, trunks, logs, and beams with a diameter determined by the guide bar's cutting length. They are not suitable for professional tree services or cutting metal, plastic, masonry, or non-wood building materials. The product requires two-handed operation at all times for adequate control and safety.

Function Description:

The Ryobi cordless chainsaw is a battery-operated power tool designed for cutting wood. It features a guide bar and a saw chain that rotates to perform cuts. The product is activated by a switch trigger and includes safety features such as a front hand guard, a chain tensioning screw for adjustment, and a sprocket cover. An integral bumper spike can be used as a pivot point to steady the chainsaw during cutting. The chainsaw is powered by an 18V battery pack, which is detachable.

Usage Features:

  • Two-handed operation: Always hold the chainsaw with both hands, right hand on the rear handle and left hand on the front handle, with thumbs and fingers encircling the handles.
  • Kickback prevention: Maintain a firm grip, avoid overreaching, do not cut above shoulder height, and use only manufacturer-specified replacement guide bars and saw chains. Follow sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw chain.
  • Cutting technique: Allow the chain to do the work; do not force it. Keep the chain sharp. Do not put pressure on the saw at the end of the cut. Keep the saw running until it is removed from the cut.
  • Bucking a log: Ensure firm footing and even weight distribution. Support the log when possible. For logs supported on one end, cut 1/3 diameter from the underside (underbuck) then finish by overbucking. For logs supported on both ends, cut 1/3 diameter from the top (overbuck) then finish by underbucking the lower 2/3. On slopes, stand on the uphill side.
  • Limbing a tree: Remove branches from a fallen tree. Leave larger lower limbs for support. Cut small limbs in one cut. Cut branches under tension from the bottom up.
  • Springpoles: Exercise extreme caution with springpoles; do not attempt to cut them unless professionally trained.
  • Skating/Bouncing prevention: Use both hands and ensure the saw chain establishes a groove for cutting. Avoid cutting small, flexible branches or brushes with a chainsaw.
  • Buttress roots: Remove large buttress roots before felling by making a horizontal cut first, followed by a vertical cut.
  • Over-temperature protection: The battery pack has a built-in protection feature. If the battery becomes warm to touch, allow it to cool down. If the product still doesn't work, connect the battery pack to the charger.
  • Battery insertion: Insert the battery pack until it clicks into place, ensuring it is fully seated and securely attached.
  • Chain tension adjustment: Loosen the sprocket cover screw. Turn the chain tensioning screw clockwise to increase tension and counterclockwise to reduce tension. Adjust until the gap between drive teeth and bar is between 2.5 and 3.5 mm. Tighten the sprocket cover screw after adjustment.
  • Lubrication: For best performance, lubricant may be added directly onto the bar and chain before each use.

Maintenance Features:

  • General maintenance: Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Maintain power tools and accessories, checking for misalignment, binding, breakage, and other conditions affecting operation.
  • Daily check:
    • Chain tension: Before each use and frequently.
    • Chain sharpness: Before each use (visual check).
    • Damaged parts: Before each use.
    • Loose fasteners: Before each use.
    • Bar: Before each use (inspect and clean).
    • Complete saw: After each use (inspect and clean).
  • Cleaning: Turn off the product, remove the battery pack, and allow it to cool. Remove all foreign materials. Use a brush to remove loose dirt and sawdust from around the front hand guard. Clean plastic parts with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use water to clean the product.
  • Storage: Turn off the product, remove the battery pack, and allow it to cool down. Remove all foreign materials. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place inaccessible to children and away from corrosive agents. Fit the guide bar cover before storing or transporting. Secure the product during transportation to prevent movement or falling.
  • Chain replacement: Remove the battery pack. Loosen the sprocket cover screw, remove the screw, sprocket cover, and bar and chain assembly. Install the new chain on the bar, ensuring the saw chain faces the direction of rotation. Insert chain drive links into the bar groove and position the loop around the drive sprocket. Lower the bar flush against the mounting surface. Reinstall the sprocket cover and screw.
  • Chain sharpening: This is a precision task that should be performed by experienced professionals. The manufacturer recommends replacing a worn or dull chain with a new one available at an authorised service centre.
  • Guide bars: Regularly check chain tension. Use guide bars with small radius tips to reduce kickback potential.
  • Low-kickback saw chain: Use only manufacturer-recommended replacement guide bar and chain combinations. Replace saw chains when cutting performance decreases.
  • Battery care: Recharge only with the specified charger. Store the battery pack in a location where the ambient temperature is between 0°C and 20°C. Charge the battery pack in a location where the ambient temperature is between 10°C and 38°C. Do not immerse the tool, battery pack, or charger in fluid.
  • Service: Have the power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. Do not service damaged battery packs yourself.
