Why is my Ryobi RY3714 bar and chain running hot and smoking?
    • K
      Kristin McdonaldAug 17, 2025
If the bar and chain of your Ryobi chainsaw are running hot and smoking, it could be due to several reasons. First, ensure that the chain oil tank is filled whenever you fill the fuel tank. Also, check that the chain tension isn't too tight. Additionally, test if the oiler is functioning correctly by running the chainsaw at half throttle for 30 to 45 seconds, then stopping it to see if oil is dripping from the SAFE-T-TIP™ and guide bar. Finally, clogged lubricant passages can be the cause, so remove the clutch cover and guide bar plate and clean the lubricant passages with a stiff-bristle brush.

What to do if Ryobi RY3714 Chainsaw engine does not reach full speed and/or emits excessive smoke?
    • S
      Scott GonzalesAug 21, 2025
If your Ryobi Chainsaw engine does not reach full speed and/or emits excessive smoke, ensure you are using fresh fuel and the correct 2-cycle lubricant mix ratio. Also, a dirty air filter can cause this issue, so clean the air filter. The carburetor may also require adjustment; in this case, contact a qualified service center.

Why is the chain turning at idle on my Ryobi Chainsaw?
    • H
      hodgescarlySep 3, 2025
If the chain on your Ryobi Chainsaw is turning at idle, it could be due to the carburetor needing an adjustment. Try turning the idle speed screw “T” counterclockwise to decrease the speed. Another possible cause is an air leak in the intake system, in which case you should contact a qualified service center for a rebuild kit.

If your Ryobi Chainsaw engine starts and runs, but the chain is not rotating, first, check if the chain brake is engaged and release it. If that's not the issue, ensure the chain tension isn't too tight. Also, verify that the guide bar and chain are assembled correctly. Finally, inspect the guide bar and chain for any damage. If needed, contact a qualified service center for drive sprocket replacement.

How to fix Ryobi Chainsaw engine that will not start?
    • J
      Jacob BradyNov 13, 2025
If your Ryobi Chainsaw engine won't start, it could be due to a lack of spark. To check for a spark, remove the air filter cover and the spark plug from the cylinder. Reattach the spark plug wire and lay the spark plug on top of the cylinder, ensuring the metal part of the plug touches the cylinder. Pull the starter grip and look for a spark at the spark plug tip. If there's no spark, try again with a new spark plug. Another reason could be that the engine is flooded. If so, remove the spark plug, move the choke knob to the RUN position (pushed in completely), and pull the starter grip 15 to 20 times to clear excess fuel. Clean and reinstall the spark plug. Push and fully release the primer bulb 10 times. Pull the starter three times with the choke knob at RUN. If it doesn't start, move th...
