How to fix Ryobi RCS-4046C that will not start?
    • D
      Daniel HuffAug 16, 2025
If your Ryobi Chainsaw engine won't start, it could be due to no spark or a flooded engine. First, check for a spark by removing the air filter cover and spark plug. Reattach the spark plug wire, lay the spark plug on the cylinder (metal part touching). Pull the starter grip and watch for a spark at the plug tip. If no spark, try a new spark plug. If there is no spark with a new plug, contact an authorized service center. To clear a flooded engine, turn the ignition switch OFF, remove the spark plug, move the choke to the RUN position, and pull the starter grip 15-20 times. Clean and reinstall the spark plug. Set the ignition switch to RUN, push the primer bulb 4 times, and pull the starter three times with the choke at RUN. If it doesn't start, move the choke to HALF CHOKE and repeat.

    • M
      Mark WuAug 22, 2025
If your Ryobi chainsaw engine doesn't reach full speed and emits excessive smoke, the issue may be due to an incorrect oil/fuel mixture, a dirty air filter, a dirty spark arrestor screen, or the carburetor needing adjustment. Ensure you're using fresh fuel and the correct 2-stroke oil mix ratio. Clean the air filter. Also, clean the spark arrestor screen. If the problem persists, contact an authorized service center for carburetor adjustment.

Why is my Ryobi RCS-4046C Chainsaw bar and chain running hot and smoking?
    • R
      Ryan JohnsonAug 26, 2025
If the bar and chain on your Ryobi chainsaw are running hot and smoking, it could be due to an empty chain oil tank, chain tension that is too tight, a non-functioning oiler, or clogged oil passages. Ensure the oil tank is filled each time you fill the fuel tank. Adjust the chain tension. Run the saw at half throttle for 30-45 seconds, then stop it and check for oil dripping from the guide bar. If there's no oil, remove the clutch cover and guide bar plate, then clean the oil passages with a stiff-bristle brush.

    • T
      Traci WattsSep 6, 2025
If your Ryobi chainsaw engine starts and runs, but the chain isn't rotating, it could be due to the chain brake being engaged, chain tension being too tight, incorrect assembly of the guide bar and chain, damage to the guide bar and/or chain, or damaged drive sprocket teeth. First, release the chain brake. Next, adjust the chain tension. Inspect the guide bar and chain for damage. If the drive sprocket teeth are damaged, contact an authorized service center for replacement.

If your Ryobi chainsaw engine starts, runs, and accelerates but won't idle and the chain turns at idle, the carburetor may need an adjustment to the idle speed, or there may be an air leak in the intake system. Turn the idle speed screw “T” clockwise to increase idle speed or counterclockwise to decrease it. If needed, contact an authorized service center for a rebuild kit.
