Do you have a question about the Ryobi RY40704 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document is an operator's manual for the RYOBI 40V KINETIC LOG SPLITTER, model number RY40704. It provides instructions for safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting in English, French, and Spanish.

Function Description

The Ryobi 40V Kinetic Log Splitter is designed for splitting wood logs. It utilizes a kinetic mechanism to split logs, requiring two-hand operation for safety. The machine is intended for home use only and should not be used for purposes other than splitting wood.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Motor: 40V
  • Max Force: 12 tons
  • Log Capacity Diameter:
    • Maximum: 12 in. (305 mm)
    • Minimum: 4 in. (102 mm)
  • Log Capacity Length: 20 in. (508 mm)

Usage Features

Safety Features:

  • Operator Zone: The operator zone is in the right rear area as facing the log splitter controls, never directly behind the ram.
  • Two-Hand Operation: The log splitter requires using two hands to operate, engaging both the safety lever and the splitting lever simultaneously.
  • Eye Protection: Always wear eye protection with side shields marked to comply with ANSI Z87.1.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Nonslip, heavy-duty protective gloves and nonslip safety footwear are recommended.
  • Bystander Distance: Keep all bystanders at least 10 ft. (3 m) away from the work area.
  • Proper Log Loading: Only dry, cylindrically shaped logs cut squarely on each end should be split. Logs must be placed flat and lengthwise in the direction of the grain on the work table, with one end against the wedge. Only one log should be split at a time.
  • Avoid Improper Log Types: Never attempt to split wet, curved, or angled logs, or logs that do not sit flat on the work table or against the ram.
  • Reset/Overload Button: If the motor is overloaded, the machine will shut off. Pushing this button restarts the machine and pulls the ram back to the starting position.
  • Scabbard: Used to cover the wedge for storage and transportation. It has a loop for tethering to the log splitter frame (not for securing or holding the weight of the splitter).
  • Side Supports: Located on each side of the work table to keep logs resting securely.
  • Work Table: Provides a surface to support the log before splitting.

Operation Steps:

  1. Preparation: Ensure the log splitter is on a level, flat surface and blocked to prevent movement. Sort logs, removing foreign debris, knots, or logs that are too hard or too small. Prepare an area for finished split logs.
  2. Battery Installation: Raise the battery cover, align the raised ribs on the battery pack with the grooves in the battery port, and place the battery pack in the log splitter. Ensure the latch snaps in place and the battery is securely seated. Lower the battery cover.
  3. Starting: Depress the ON/OFF button and wait a few seconds for the flywheel to get up to speed.
  4. Loading: Place the log lengthwise on the work table, resting firmly on the side supports with one end against the wedge. For small logs, place them against the wedge before starting.
  5. Splitting: Place one hand on the safety lever and one hand on the splitting lever. Push the safety lever fully to the operating position, then rapidly push the splitting lever forward to engage the ram. The ram will push the log into the wedge.
  6. Post-Split: Once the log is split, pull both handles back to the starting positions.
  7. Stopping: Depress the ON/OFF button and wait for the flywheel to come to a complete stop.
  8. Jammed Log Release: If a log jams, turn off the splitter and wait for the flywheel to stop. Find a shorter log that fits between the jammed log and the ram. Place the second log on the work table against the jammed log. Turn on the splitter, wait for speed, and then use the two-hand operation to push the jammed log free with the second log. Never attempt to knock a jammed log off the splitter.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • Inspection: Before each use, inspect the product for damaged, missing, or loose parts (screws, nuts, bolts, caps, etc.). Tighten all fasteners and replace any damaged or missing parts.
  • Cleaning: Avoid using solvents on plastic parts. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, lubricant, and grease. Do not allow brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-based products, or penetrating lubricants to contact plastic parts.
  • Service: Service must be performed by qualified repair personnel using only identical replacement parts. Do not access internal components, as this could cause the ram to move unexpectedly.
  • Battery Removal: Always remove the battery pack before performing any maintenance or moving/transporting the tool to prevent accidental starting.

Lubrication:

  • The splitting lever periodically needs to be lubricated. Apply oil in the hole in the lever as shown in Figure 10.

Storage:

  • Cleaning: Before storage, wipe any moisture, dirt, or debris from the battery area.
  • Battery Storage: Remove batteries and store them in a secure location out of reach of children.
  • Unit Storage: Store the log splitter in a clean, dry place, out of reach of children.
  • Inspection: Check all nuts, bolts, knobs, screws, and fasteners for tightness. Inspect moving parts for damage, breakage, and wear, and have any damaged or missing parts repaired.
  • Wedge Cover: Cover the wedge with the scabbard and secure it with a rope to the frame of the log splitter.
  • Upright Position: Grip the handles and pull up to rotate the splitter into an upright storage position.
