The
pinion
of
the
solenoid
-
control
led
starter
(Fig. 35) slides
on
a
coarse
thread
on
the
armature
shaft
and
is
first
pressed
up
against
the
gear
rim
by
mea
ns
of
a shi
ft
lever
unt
il
it
engages
with
it
. The
lever
is
electro-magne
ticall
y
operated
.
Sh

tly
after
en-
gagement
of
the
pinion,
the
swit
ch
mounted
on
th
e
starter
automatically
closes -
on
mecha
nically
operat
ed sta
rter
s
by
means
of
the
engaging
lev
er
-
the
armature
revol-
ves
and
the
pinion
screws
it
self
further
for
wa
rd
on
the
coa
rse
thread
un
til
it is
ful
ly
e
ngag
ed. Even
if
tooth
on
tooth
e
ngag
eme
nt
occurs,
the
switch w
ill
close, as the
spring
is
spring-connected
to
the
guide
ring
and
th
e l
ever
is
ther
efore
not
hindered
in
its
movem
e
nt;
w hen
starting
,
the
armature
turns
th
e
pinion
until
it
can
engage.
As
soon
as
the
pinion
runs
up
aga
·
in
st i
ts
coun
te
rpart,
fi
rm
contact
is
established
between
it
and
the
ar
mature,
and
the
engine
is
being
start
ed.
If
,
after
star
ti
ng
,
the
eng
ine
begin
s
to
ove
rtak
e
the
star
te
r,
the
pin
ion is
uncoupled
from
the
armature
s
haft
by
an
ov
err
unning
ro
ll
er
clutch,
but
remains
en
gaged
w
ith
th
e
gear
ri
m
until
the
enga
·
ging
l
ever
is
r
et
urned
to
its
ini
ti
al
position
by
a re
turn
spring.
To e
nable
the
starter
to
come
to
rest as
soon
as
possib
le
after
bei
ng
sw
itched
off,
and
to
enable
a
new
sta·
rt
to
be
made
shortly
after
wa
rds,
an
armature
brake
is
installed
on
th
e
commutato
r
bearing
of
the
starter
.
