The
pinion of th e inertia-pin i on type sta rt er (Fig. 36) slid es on a coarse th read on th e
armatur e sh aft. In rest positi on th e gear is he ld back by spri ng te nsion and the pin ion
is not engaged . Whe n th e s tarter is opera t ed, the accele r atio n of the starter and th e
inertia of the pinion r es ult in a force w hi ch caus es the pi nion to run al ong the sha ft
and engage with the gear ri m. Wh en the pinion has reached th e stop on the arma ture
s haft th e drive b eco mes positive and the e ngine is turn ed by the starter.
If , aft er starti n g, the e ngin e begins to over ta ke th e starter, th e pinion is uncoup led
fro m th e armat ure s haft by an overrunning rol ler clutch and is s pun ba ·ck by spr ing
press ur e into rest position .
