Overview

This document describes the BoostaPak by Safety 1st, a belt-positioning booster seat designed for children weighing 40-80 pounds (18.1-36.3 kg) and measuring 43-52 inches (110.1-132.1 cm), and over 4 years old. It functions as a booster seat without a backrest, utilizing the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt system to restrain the child. The manual emphasizes the importance of proper installation and use to ensure child safety.

Function Description:

The BoostaPak serves as a belt-positioning booster seat, elevating a child to allow the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt to fit correctly across their body. It is designed to be used forward-facing in a vehicle. The booster seat features armrests that can be unfolded for use and folded in for storage or transport. A key component is the belt positioning clip, which helps guide the shoulder belt across the child's chest and shoulders. This clip is always attached to the booster seat and must be positioned correctly for the child's height. The booster also incorporates a backpack storage area, allowing it to double as a portable solution for children's belongings.

Usage Features:

  • Preparation: Before use, the armrests must be unfolded and locked into place. The booster seat is then placed forward-facing in the chosen vehicle seating position, ensuring its back and top flap are flat against the vehicle seat back.
  • Belt Positioning Clip: The belt positioning clip is crucial for proper belt fit. It must be attached to the metal ring closest to the vehicle buckle being used. To adjust its position, the strap can be loosened or tightened, and the clip can be moved along the strap. When the child is seated, the clip should be pulled straight up so the top of the shoulder is even with the line on the clip, ensuring the shoulder belt lays snugly across the center of the child's shoulders and chest, not on the face or neck. The clip should always be behind the child's back.
  • Child Placement: The child should sit with their back flat against the vehicle seat and their bottom flat against the seat base. The lap portion of the vehicle's lap/shoulder belt is routed under both armrests, and the shoulder belt goes over the armrest on the vehicle buckle side. The shoulder belt must be adjusted snugly.
  • Backpack Functionality: The BoostaPak includes a backpack storage area, accessible by unzipping. The backpack straps can be adjusted for length by lifting a locking tab to lengthen or pulling the free end to shorten. It is important not to access the backpack while using it as a booster seat and not to overstuff it, as this can prevent the booster from sitting properly on the vehicle seat bench. The zipper should always be closed when used as a booster seat to prevent objects from injuring occupants during a crash or sudden stop.
  • Vehicle Compatibility: The booster seat requires a vehicle lap and shoulder belt system for installation. It is not certified for aircraft use. Users should consult their vehicle owner's manual for information on air bag/child restraint use, vehicle belt use, and suitable seating positions. The booster should only be used on forward-facing vehicle seats.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual repeatedly stresses critical safety warnings, including:
    • Failure to follow instructions can result in serious injury or death.
    • Never take a child out of the restraint while the vehicle is moving or leave them unattended.
    • Do not use a damaged or modified restraint, or substitute parts.
    • Only use accessories approved by Dorel Juvenile Group.
    • Never allow children to play with the restraint.
    • Do not remove or cover warning labels.
    • Do not use as a chair, step stool, or feeding booster outside the vehicle.
    • The booster seat must be securely belted in the vehicle even when not in use to prevent injury to occupants in a crash.
    • Do not use a child restraint that has been in a crash.
    • The shoulder belt must always be adjusted snugly across the child's chest and never placed under the child's arms.
    • Do not use the restraint if the midpoint of the child's head is above the top of the vehicle seat back or headrest.
    • Children are safer in rear seating positions.
    • Park in the shade or where the sun does not directly hit the child restraint to avoid burns.

Maintenance Features:

  • Seat Pad Cleaning: The seat pad can be removed for cleaning. This involves unzipping the backpack, unzipping an internal zipper, undoing fastening strips in front of the belt path, and pulling the pad off the plastic shell. The pad should be hand washed with warm sudsy water, rinsed clean, and air-dried. Do not use bleach or other harsh cleaners, and do not dry clean.
  • Seat Pad Replacement: To replace the pad, reverse the removal steps, slipping the pad over the plastic shell and zipping the internal zipper.
  • General Care: The manual implies that the booster seat should always be used with the seat pad.
  • Troubleshooting: If the shoulder belt crosses the child's neck, users are advised to try moving the child restraint toward the center of the vehicle or moving the vehicle seat forward or back. Checking for adjustable shoulder belt anchor points in the vehicle is also suggested. The shoulder belt should never be placed behind the child.

The BoostaPak is a functional and portable booster seat designed with safety and convenience in mind, emphasizing correct usage of the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt system and proper positioning of the child and the belt positioning clip.
