Overview

This document describes the Scheppach MS226-53E SE Petrol Lawn Mower (self-propelled), a machine designed for private use in home and hobby gardens. It is not intended for commercial, technical, or industrial applications, nor for trimming bushes, hedges, shrubs, cutting scaling vegetation, planted roofs, balcony-grown grass, cleaning walkways, or chopping up tree or hedge clippings. It should also not be used as a power cultivator to level out high areas such as molehills. For safety reasons, it must not be used as a drive unit for other work tools or toolkits.

The lawn mower is equipped with a 224 cm³ four-stroke, air-cooled engine with a maximum output of 4.4 kW / 6 HP at a rotation speed of 2800 U/min. It features a 1.2-liter fuel tank and requires SAE 30/10W40 / 10W30 motor oil, with an oil tank capacity of 0.5 liters. The cutting height is adjustable in 7 stages from 25-75 mm, and the cutting width is 53 cm. The machine weighs 34.4 kg.

For starting, the lawn mower includes a pull start (17) and an electric starter (17a). It is equipped with a 20V Lithium-Ion battery system with a capacity of 2000 mAh / 37 Wh. The battery charger (21) operates on 100-240V AC and has a charging current of 0.6 A, taking approximately 200 minutes for a full charge. The battery acts as a device key in some models.

Usage Features:

  • Self-propelled drive: The drive lever (2) engages the clutch, allowing the mower to move forward with the engine running. Releasing the lever stops the mower.
  • Cutting height adjustment: The cutting height is centrally adjusted using a lever (14) with 7 selectable positions. This adjustment should only be done when the engine is switched off and the spark plug boot is pulled.
  • Grass collection: The mower can be used with a 65-liter grass box (16) for collecting clippings. The grass box has a filling level indicator (Fig. 16) that opens with the air current produced by the mower. When the flap falls, the grass box is full and needs emptying.
  • Side discharge: For side discharge, the side discharge adapter (8) can be mounted after removing the grass box and inserting the mulch insert (19).
  • Mulching function: In mulching mode, clippings are shredded in the enclosed mower housing and spread back onto the lawn, eliminating the need for collection. Mulching is only possible if the lawn is relatively short. The mulch insert (19) is used for this function, and the side discharge adapter (8) must not be installed when mulching.
  • Engine brake (3): This mechanical brake stops the engine and blade automatically within 7 seconds when released. It must be engaged by pressing it against the handle (1) before starting the engine.
  • Fueling: Use fresh, clean unleaded petrol with a maximum of 10% bioethanol. Fueling should be done outdoors, without smoking, and only when the engine is cool.
  • Mowing on slopes: Mow across hills, never straight up or down. Exercise caution when changing direction on a slope. Do not mow on excessively steep slopes (over 15 degrees) or near garbage dumps, ditches, or dykes.
  • Safety precautions: Always wear sturdy, non-slip footwear and long trousers. Remove all objects from the mowing area before starting. Keep hands and feet away from rotating parts and the discharge opening. Ensure other people maintain a safe distance.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular cleaning: The mower, especially the underside and blade area, should be cleaned after each use. Do not use water jets or high-pressure cleaners.
  • Oil level check (Fig. 18): Check the oil level before each mowing session. The oil dipstick (12) should show the oil level between the maximum and minimum marks.
  • Oil change (Fig. 23): Change the engine oil annually before the start of the season, when the engine is warm.
  • Air filter maintenance (Fig. 20): Check the air filter every 25 operating hours and clean it if necessary. Clean with compressed air or by tapping it out, never with petrol or flammable cleaning agents.
  • Spark plug maintenance (Fig. 21): Check the spark plug (10) after 10 operating hours and clean it with a copper wire brush if necessary. Service the spark plug every 50 operating hours. Set the gap to 0.75 mm.
  • Blade maintenance (Fig. 17): Regularly check the blade for sharpness and damage. Sharpen or replace the blade as a set if it is blunt or damaged. Blade replacement should be done by an authorized service workshop using original spare parts.
  • Cable care: Oil the cables at regular intervals and check their smooth movement.
  • Storage: Store the device in a dark, dry, frost-free place, inaccessible to children, with an optimal temperature between 5 and 30 °C. Empty the fuel tank and run the engine until all fuel is consumed before long-term storage. Remove the battery pack from the engine battery tray before adjustments or repairs.
  • Battery charging: The Lithium-Ion battery pack should be charged using the original charger (21). The battery fuel gauge (Fig. 25) indicates the remaining charge. A green light on the charger indicates a full charge, while a red light indicates normal charging. No light means the battery is too hot or cold, or potentially damaged.
