Overview

The Sena R2 EVO is a smart road cycling helmet designed to enhance the cycling experience through integrated communication and safety features. This quick start guide outlines its basic operations, pairing, and control functions.

Function Description

The R2 EVO helmet integrates a Bluetooth system, allowing cyclists to connect with their smartphones for various functions, including phone calls and music playback. A key feature is the Mesh Intercom™ system, which enables communication with other R2 EVO users within the same channel, fostering group rides and enhanced awareness. The helmet also includes an LED taillight, improving visibility and safety, especially in low-light conditions. The microphone can be enabled or disabled, providing control over communication privacy during Mesh Intercom sessions.

Usage Features

The helmet's Bluetooth system is controlled via three buttons: a (-) button, a Center button, and a (+) button, located on the side of the helmet. These buttons facilitate a range of operations, from powering the device on and off to managing phone calls and music.

Basic Operations:

  • Powering On/Off: The helmet can be powered on by holding the Center button for 1 second and powered off by tapping the Center button once.
  • Volume Control: Volume can be adjusted by tapping the (+) or (-) buttons once.
  • Battery Level Check: The battery level can be checked by observing the LED indicators after powering on the device.

Phone Pairing and Usage:

  • Pairing: To pair with a smartphone, turn on the Bluetooth system (hold Center button for 1 second), and the helmet will enter "Phone Pairing" mode, indicated by blinking LEDs. Users then select "R2 EVO" from their phone's Bluetooth device list.
  • Answering/Ending Calls: Calls can be answered by tapping the Center button once and ended by holding the Center button for 2 seconds.
  • Rejecting Calls: To reject an incoming call, hold the Center button for 2 seconds.
  • Voice Dial: The voice dial function can be activated by holding the Center button for 3 seconds while in standby mode.

Mesh Intercom™:

  • Mesh Intercom On/Off: The Mesh Intercom can be turned on by tapping the Center button once, which will be indicated by "Mesh intercom on, Channel 1." It can be turned off by tapping the Center button once, indicated by "Mesh intercom off." When Mesh Intercom is active, the R2 EVO automatically connects to nearby R2 EVO users on channel 1.
  • Channel Setting: The helmet supports 1 to 9 channels. To enter the Channel Setting menu, hold the (+) button for 2 seconds. Channels can be navigated by tapping the (+) or (-) buttons once. To save the selected channel, tap the Center button once. The Sena Cycling App can also be used for channel changes.

Maintenance Features

The R2 EVO includes features for software updates and troubleshooting to ensure optimal performance.

Downloadable Sena Software:

  • Sena Cycling App: Available on Google Play Store and App Store, this app allows users to control various helmet functions, including channel settings for Mesh Intercom and LED taillight control.
  • Sena Device Manager: Downloadable from sena.com, this software facilitates firmware upgrades and device configuration settings, ensuring the helmet stays up-to-date with the latest features and improvements.
  • Firmware: Firmware updates are available through sena.com to enhance functionality and address any issues.

Troubleshooting:

  • Factory Reset: A factory reset can be performed by holding the Center button for 10 seconds to enter the configuration menu, then tapping the (+) button twice to select "Factory Reset," and finally tapping the Center button once to confirm. This resets the Bluetooth system to its original factory settings.
  • Fault Reset: In case of a system malfunction, a fault reset can be performed by inserting a pin into the pinhole fault reset button located near the DC power charging and firmware upgrade port. It's important to note that a fault reset does not restore the Bluetooth system to factory default settings.

The helmet's design also incorporates practical elements for comfort and fit, such as a chinstrap pad, strap adjuster, buckle, and O-ring, all of which contribute to a secure and comfortable wearing experience. The chinstrap tension can be adjusted to ensure a snug fit, and the helmet should be positioned correctly on the head, covering the forehead, with the strap adjuster centered below the ears and the buckle under the chin.
