The Sena M1 EVO is a smart mountain bike helmet designed to enhance your riding experience by keeping you connected and safe. This helmet integrates advanced Bluetooth capabilities and Mesh Intercom technology, allowing for seamless communication, navigation, and entertainment while on the trail.

Function Description

The primary function of the M1 EVO is to provide a comfortable and protective helmet for mountain biking, while also offering a suite of smart features. It allows you to hear GPS navigation instructions directly through integrated speakers, ensuring you stay on track without needing to look at your phone. You can also take phone calls hands-free, making it easy to stay in touch without interrupting your ride. For entertainment, the helmet enables you to listen to your favorite tunes, adding a soundtrack to your adventures.

A key communication feature is the Mesh Intercom, which facilitates communication with other M1 EVO users. This allows for group conversations with fellow riders, enhancing coordination and social interaction during rides. The Mesh Intercom operates over a significant range, ensuring clear communication in open terrain.

Safety is also a core function, addressed by the integrated LED Taillight. This feature increases your visibility to others, especially in low-light conditions, contributing to a safer riding experience. The helmet also supports Voice Command, allowing you to control various functions using simple voice prompts, which minimizes distractions and keeps your hands on the handlebars.

Usage Features

The M1 EVO is designed for intuitive use, with several features that make it easy to operate while riding.

Connectivity:

  • Bluetooth 4.1: Provides a stable and efficient wireless connection to your smartphone for GPS, phone calls, and music.
  • Mesh Intercom: Enables group communication with other M1 EVO users, with a range of up to 900 meters (0.5 miles) in open terrain.

Communication:

  • Phone Pairing: The helmet offers multiple methods for phone pairing, including automatic pairing upon initial power-on or after a factory reset, pairing when the device is turned off by holding the (+) and Center Buttons for 10 seconds, and pairing when the device is turned on by holding the Center Button for 5 seconds. This flexibility ensures you can easily connect your phone regardless of the helmet's current state.
  • Answering/Ending Calls: You can answer a call with a single tap of a button, or end/reject a call by holding a button for 2 seconds.
  • Voice Dialer: Initiate calls using your voice by holding a button for 3 seconds, allowing for hands-free dialing.
  • Mesh Intercom On/Off: Easily toggle the Mesh Intercom function on or off with a single tap of a button, accompanied by an audible prompt.
  • Mic Enable/Disable: You can enable or disable the microphone during Mesh Intercom communication by holding a button for 1 second, providing privacy when needed.
  • Channel Setting: If you experience interference with Mesh Intercom, you can change the channel from 1 to 9. This is done by tapping a button twice to enter the channel setting, navigating between channels with single taps, and saving the selection with another tap.

Entertainment:

  • Music Controls: Play or pause music with a 1-second hold of a button. Skip to the next track or go back to the previous track with a 1-second hold of respective buttons.
  • FM Radio: Turn the FM radio on or off with a 1-second hold of a button. Scan for stations by holding a button for 1 second, or seek specific stations by tapping a button twice. You can also navigate through preset stations with a 1-second hold.

Safety and Visibility:

  • LED Taillight: The integrated LED Taillight can be controlled using voice commands ("Taillight" or "Hello Sena") to turn it on or off. Alternatively, you can cycle through LED modes (On and Solid, Night Flash, Day Flash, LED Off) by tapping the SENA Button.

General Operations:

  • Powering On/Off: Power the helmet on with a 1-second hold of a button, and power it off with a single tap.
  • Volume Control: Adjust the volume up or down with single taps of the respective buttons.
  • Voice Command: Activate voice commands to control various functions, enhancing hands-free operation.

Helmet Fit and Comfort:

  • Wearing the Helmet: Instructions are provided for proper helmet positioning, ensuring the front covers your forehead, the strap adjuster is centered below your ears, and the buckle is under your chin.
  • Chinstrap Adjustment: The chinstrap tension can be adjusted by pulling the chinstrap end through the buckle after removing the chinstrap pad, allowing for a tight and comfortable fit. Excess strap can be secured with an O-ring.
  • Retention System: The retention system knob can be turned clockwise to tighten or counterclockwise to loosen the fit. The height of the retention system can also be adjusted by firmly pulling or pushing it to a different position, ensuring a secure and personalized fit.

Maintenance Features

The M1 EVO includes features and tools to help you maintain its performance and keep it up-to-date.

  • Firmware Updates: Sena provides free firmware updates to enhance existing features and introduce new ones. You can download the latest firmware from sena.com.
  • Sena Device Manager: This desktop application allows you to upgrade the helmet's firmware and configure its settings directly from your PC or Apple computer. It's a crucial tool for keeping your device optimized.
  • Sena Cycling App: Available for both Android and iOS, this mobile app offers a convenient way to manage your helmet's settings. Through the app, you can control Mesh Intercom, music, FM radio, LED Taillight, and device settings. It also provides access to the Quick Start Guide and User's Guide.
  • Fault Reset Button: In case of a system malfunction, the helmet features a Fault Reset Button. This button helps to reset the device without restoring it to factory default settings, preserving your personalized configurations.
  • DC Power Charging & Firmware Upgrade Port: A dedicated port allows for easy charging of the helmet's battery and serves as the connection point for firmware upgrades via the Sena Device Manager.
  • Battery Level Check: You can visually check the battery level when powering on the Bluetooth system, allowing you to anticipate when a charge is needed.
  • Factory Reset: If you need to revert all settings to their original factory defaults, the helmet supports a factory reset function. This can be useful for troubleshooting or preparing the helmet for a new user.
