Overview

The Numark NS4FX is a professional DJ controller designed for use with Serato DJ Pro software, offering a comprehensive suite of features for mixing, scratching, and performance. It functions as a "Serato DJ Lite hardware unlocked" device out of the box, meaning it can be used immediately with Serato DJ Lite. For advanced functionalities and full integration, it requires a paid upgrade and activation of a Serato DJ Pro license. Users can also try Serato DJ Pro before purchasing a license. The device does not require manufacturer-specific drivers for macOS or Windows operating systems; simply connecting it via a USB cable and launching Serato DJ Pro is sufficient for operation.

The controller's overview highlights a robust layout with various controls for seamless DJing. On the rear panel, it features 1/8" and 1/4" headphone jacks for connecting headphones, an A-OFF-B section to assign the crossfader per channel to deck A, OFF, or B, and a MIC2/LEVEL/TONE section for connecting a microphone via a 1/4" / TRS jack and adjusting its level and tone. The POWER button turns the device on/off, and a DC IN port connects the power adapter. For security, a KENSINGTON LOCK slot is provided. A USB port connects the device to a PC, while BALANCED OUTPUT (XLR) and BOOTH (RCA) ports provide main and booth outputs, respectively. An AUX (RCA) input is available, and a MIC1 (1/4" / TRS jack) allows for another microphone connection.

The top panel of the NS4FX is rich with performance-oriented controls. Each deck features a LAYER button to toggle between decks 1 or 3 (left side) and 2 or 4 (right side). A dedicated MIC 1 section allows for adjusting input level and tone for the first microphone. CHANNEL CUE buttons are used to cue channels for headphone monitoring. LOAD L/R buttons load the currently highlighted track to the left or right deck, with a double-press enabling instant double. The (FX) DRY/WET control adjusts the effects parameter (depth) in Multi FX mode or effects depth in Single FX mode. The BROWSE knob scrolls through the library, and pressing it toggles between track and crate selection. Holding SHIFT while turning the BROWSE knob enables fast library scrolling, and pressing it adds the selected track to the Prepare Crate.

FX BEATS adjusts the beats multiplier, while FX TAP allows users to tap the FX tempo. FX SELECT chooses the effects slot. Each channel includes CHANNEL LEVEL/EQ/FILTER controls to adjust channel level, EQ (treble/mid/bass), or the channel combo filter. The JOG WHEEL controls the waveform within Serato DJ Pro, and the BOOTH and MAIN knobs adjust their respective output levels. The TEMPO SLIDER adjusts the playback tempo of the loaded track, and PITCH BEND - and PITCH BEND + allow for momentary pitch adjustments. Holding SHIFT while using PITCH BEND - toggles between pitch ranges per deck, and holding SHIFT with PITCH BEND + enables/disables Key Lock.

LOOP buttons toggle Autoloop on/off, and X2 and 1/2 buttons double or halve the active loop length, respectively. Holding SHIFT with X2 sets or edits the loop out point, and with 1/2, it sets or edits the loop in point. SCRATCH toggles vinyl mode on/off per deck. CHANNEL FADER adjusts channel volume, and METER displays the deck level. CUE GAIN adjusts headphone output level, and CUE MIX adjusts the headphone output mix between CUE and PGM. The CROSSFADER fades audio between Deck A and Deck B. FX HOLD/ON pushes up to permanently engage effects or pushes down to momentarily engage them.

The PERFORMANCE PADS are a central feature, offering 8 different modes. In CUE mode, pads 1-8 trigger Serato DJ Pro Cue points. Pressing a pad without an existing Cue point sets one. Holding SHIFT and pressing a pad deletes the Cue point. AUTO LOOP mode triggers autoloops of variable sizes, influenced by the loop selection area in the Serato DJ Pro user interface. FADER CUTS mode triggers fader cuts, which is firmware-based. SAMPLE mode triggers samples loaded into the Serato DJ Pro Sampler. Holding SHIFT while pressing a pad stops a playing sample or loads a new one if empty.

PITCH PLAY mode, accessed by holding SHIFT and pressing CUE, allows playing Cue points over variable pitch ranges. This mode requires the Serato Pitch 'n Time DJ expansion pack. There are three key ranges (Up, Middle, Down) for pitch adjustment, with the root key pad (0) always lit white. Holding SHIFT and pressing Parameter left/right shifts the pitch by a single semitone. To change the selected Cue point, hold SHIFT and press the corresponding performance pad.

ROLL mode, activated by holding SHIFT and pressing AUTO LOOP, activates loop rolls of varying sizes. SLICER mode, accessed by holding SHIFT and pressing FADER CUTS, divides a specified range into eight sections, assigned to the performance pads. SCRATCH BANK mode, enabled by holding SHIFT and pressing SAMPLE, allows assigning Serato DJ Pro library files to pads. Triggering a pad loads the corresponding file to the deck. The Scratch Bank Panel in Serato DJ Pro's top toolbar allows loading/ejecting files and choosing preferences like start point, Key Lock, and Repeat. Holding SHIFT and pressing a Scratch Bank pad unloads the current file and reloads the last track.

Beat Jump functionality is activated in the Serato DJ Pro Setup screen under DJ preferences. When enabled, Beat Jump controls appear underneath the Auto Loop values on each deck. In AUTO LOOP or ROLL mode, the bottom row of 4 pads (pads 5-8) function as Beat Jump controls, mirroring the change in the deck Auto Loop area.

For maintenance and user support, Serato DJ Pro offers several features. The MIDI feature allows remapping Serato DJ Pro software functions to the controller or assigning controls to a secondary MIDI controller. This is done in the SETUP screen's MIDI tab, where users can select their device, ensure "Allow Serato Hardware Remapping" is checked, and then use the MIDI assign button. MIDI presets can be saved, edited, or deleted, with a 'Restore Defaults' option to revert to original settings.

Help features include "Show Tooltips," accessible via the Help button, which provides context-sensitive information when hovering over screen sections. "Watch Tutorials," also found via the Help button, launches the default internet browser to access tutorials. "Get Support" directs users to the Serato DJ Pro knowledge base for articles and guides, with a search box available for specific topics. These features ensure users can effectively learn, troubleshoot, and maintain their understanding of the Numark NS4FX and Serato DJ Pro.
