Overview

This document describes the Shark Air Purifier 3-in-1, HC500/450 Series, an appliance designed for indoor and household use to improve air quality and provide heating.

The air purifier features a polarized plug for safety, requiring proper insertion into an outlet. It's crucial to avoid operating the appliance with a damaged cord or plug, and any damaged cords must be replaced by authorized personnel. The cord should not be run under carpeting, covered by rugs, or routed under furniture, and should be kept away from high-traffic areas and heated surfaces to prevent tripping hazards and damage.

This appliance is not intended for use by individuals with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless supervised or instructed by a responsible person. Children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the appliance, and cleaning or user maintenance should not be performed by children without supervision. Before any maintenance, the appliance must be unplugged from the electrical outlet. Users should avoid handling the plug or appliance with wet hands and must not use the unit without a filter in place. Only Shark® branded filters and accessories should be used. The power cord should not be damaged by pulling or carrying the appliance by it, unplugging by pulling the cord, standing the appliance on the cord, closing doors on the cord, pulling the cord around sharp corners, or leaving it near heated surfaces.

To ensure proper operation, the air purifier should not be used with any blocked openings; it must be kept free of dust, lint, hair, and anything that may reduce airflow. If airflow is restricted, the appliance should be turned off, unplugged, and all obstructions removed before restarting. The appliance should not be used if it's not working correctly, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped into water. It should be placed on stable surfaces, not on chairs or other furniture. The air purifier is not suitable for use in wet or damp surfaces, outdoor areas, or enclosed spaces that may contain explosive or toxic fumes or vapors (such as lighter fluid, gasoline, kerosene, paint, paint thinners, mothproofing substances, or flammable dust). All controls should be turned off before unplugging the appliance, and it should be unplugged from the electrical outlet when not in use and before any maintenance or cleaning. Cleaning should be done with soapy water only, as cleaning chemicals could damage the unit. The filter must be in place after routine maintenance. This appliance is not suitable for use with solid-state speed controls.

When operating as a heater, the unit becomes hot, so bare skin should not touch hot surfaces. Handles should be used when moving the heater. Combustible materials like furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothes, and curtains should be kept at least 3 feet (0.9m) away from the front, sides, and rear of the heater. Extreme caution is necessary when the heater is used by or near children or individuals with disabilities, or when left operating unattended. The heater is not intended for use in bathrooms, laundry areas, or other high-moisture locations, and should never be placed where it might fall into a bathtub or other water container. Foreign objects should not be inserted into ventilation or exhaust openings to prevent electric shock, fire, or damage. To prevent fire, air intakes or exhausts should not be blocked, and the heater should not be used on soft surfaces like a bed where openings might become blocked. The heater contains hot, arcing, and/or sparking parts, so it should not be used in areas where gasoline, paint, or flammable liquids are used or stored. The heater should only be used as described in this manual to avoid fire, electric shock, or injury. Heaters should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet/receptacle, never with an extension cord or relocatable power tap.

The remote control uses a CR2025 lithium coin cell battery. These batteries should be disposed of according to local regulations and kept away from children, as even used batteries can cause severe internal burns if swallowed. After changing batteries, the compartment must be completely closed and secured. If it doesn't close securely, the product should not be used, the battery removed, and kept away from children. Immediate medical attention should be sought if a battery is suspected of being swallowed or placed inside any part of the body.

The device offers three primary modes: Purified Fan, Purified Heat, and Purified Air. In Purified Fan mode, purified air is directed out of the front vents. The display shows the clean air percentage and current room temperature. Fan speed can be adjusted to increase purification performance. In Purified Heat mode, purified, warm air is directed out of the front vents. The display shows the clean air percentage and the target temperature in red. Once the target temperature is reached, the bottom reading displays the current room temperature in white. The red thermometer light indicates the heater is on and warming. In Purified Air mode, the percentage of clean air is shown, and purified air is diffused out the back vents, allowing for continuous air purification without the breeze of a fan. This mode boosts cleaning power and is compatible with AUTO and ECO modes.

The air purifier includes a built-in sensor that detects air quality in real-time, displayed as a percentage of clean air. The ring around the display changes color to indicate air quality: Good (85-100% clean air, 0-25 particles), Fair (70-84% clean air, 26-80 particles), or Poor (0-69% clean air, 81-430+ particles). To improve Fair or Poor air quality, users can increase fan speed or select AUTO mode. The air quality sensor uses a cumulative particle count across all particle sizes to determine the percentage of clean air.

The device also provides detailed air information settings, including:

  • % CLEAN AIR: Displays the air quality rating (Poor, Fair, Good) based on particulate matter (PM) Air Quality Standards.
  • TIME TO CLEAN: Shows the estimated time remaining until the air is clean.
  • PARTICLE SIZES: Displays the amount of particulate matter (µg per cubic meter) for PM1 (ultra-fine allergens), PM2.5 (smoke), and PM10 (dust, mold, pollen).
  • ROOM TEMPERATURE: Displays the current room temperature (only visible in Purified Air mode).
  • FILTER LIFE: Displays the remaining filter life as a percentage.

Usage Features:

The air purifier can be controlled via a top control panel or a removable remote.

  • Power On/Off: Turns the unit on or off.
  • AUTO mode: Automatically adjusts fan speed based on air quality, decreasing as air quality improves and increasing as it worsens. This mode is recommended for optimal filter life and performance and is only available in PURIFIED AIR mode.
  • ECO mode: Activated after 10 minutes of 100% clean air, reducing power draw and optimizing filter life.
  • Air Info: Switches between air quality display options.
  • Fan Controls: Adjusts fan speed from 1-6. Manual fan speed adjustment in AUTO mode deactivates AUTO mode.
  • Heater Controls: Turns HEAT on/off. Users can set a target temperature, and the heater will automatically work to maintain it. The unit beeps when the target temperature is reached.
  • HI HEAT Mode: Runs the heater without a target temperature until turned off.
  • Shut-Off Timer: Sets the operating duration from 1-12 hours.
  • Brightness: Dims the display brightness (full, partial, or fully dim).
  • Oscillation: Turns side-to-side rotation on or off to distribute airflow.
  • Air Angle Adjustment: Front vents can be moved up or down to adjust airflow angle.

Remote Shortcuts:

  • Turn Off Sound: Press and hold the Brightness button for 3 seconds.
  • Turn On/Off Child Safety Lock: Press and hold the Timer and Oscillation buttons. A Lock icon appears on the display when activated.
  • Change Temperature Display from Fahrenheit to Celsius: Press and hold Fan and Thermometer buttons.
  • Reset Filter Life: Press and hold the Info button for 3 seconds after changing the filter.

Tips for Setting Up:

  • Ensure the front panel faces away from the closest wall.
  • Do not move the unit while it is running; turn off power and unplug before moving.
  • Ensure air intake vents are not blocked; do not place anything on the air purifier.
  • Keep away from heaters, radiators, direct sunlight, and liquids.
  • Keep nearby doors and windows closed during operation.
  • Avoid using in very humid environments.
  • Place the air purifier on a level floor surface at least 3 feet (0.9m) from walls and furnishings.
  • When carrying, hold it below the venting area; do not put hands inside the vents.

Tips for Purified Air Mode:

Air quality fluctuates due to factors like cooking, burning food, vacuuming, dusting, spraying cleaning products, smoking, or open windows/doors. Leaving the air purifier in AUTO mode optimizes filter life and performance.

Tips for Purified Heat Mode:

  • For personal heating at close range, lower the fan speed.
  • For whole-room heating at a distance, increase fan speed and turn on oscillation.
  • In HI heat mode, the heater runs continuously without a temperature target.

Night Use:

  • Lower fan speed for soothing white noise.
  • Press the Brightness button to fully dim the display.
  • Turn on oscillation for better fan coverage.
  • Press and hold the Brightness button for 3 seconds to turn sound off or on.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter Removal and Installation: Filters are engineered to last 6-12 months. When filter life reaches 0%, FILTER LIFE illuminates and flashes.
    1. Turn off and unplug the air purifier.
    2. Remove the filter cover from the back by pulling the handle.
    3. Pull out the old filter by the removal tabs and discard.
