Overview

This document is an owner's guide for the Shark ION Robot Vacuum, RV850 Series. It provides comprehensive instructions for the robot's function, usage, and maintenance, emphasizing important safety precautions for household use.

The Shark ION Robot Vacuum is designed for automated floor cleaning, utilizing Smart Sensor Technology to navigate around obstacles and furniture. It employs an array of sensors to detect walls, furniture legs, and other obstructions, allowing it to clean effectively while minimizing collisions. The robot may gently bump into objects or linger in one spot, and it might not cover every area in a single cleaning session. For optimal results, users are advised to prepare their home by clearing obstructions and to schedule daily cleanings to ensure all floor areas are regularly maintained.

Function Description:

The robot vacuum consists of a main robotic unit and a charging dock with a power supply. It features a main brushroll, side brushes, and a dust bin with a filter for collecting debris. The robot is powered by a pre-installed rechargeable battery. It can be controlled manually via buttons on the robot or remotely through the Shark ION Robot app, which offers additional features like scheduling cleaning times up to 7 days a week, starting, stopping, or docking the robot from a smartphone, and access to tips, tricks, FAQs, and tech support. Voice control is also supported via Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.

Usage Features:

  • Navigation: The robot uses Smart Sensor Technology for navigation. Users can define "no-go zones" using BotBoundary™ strips to keep the robot away from specific areas like pet bowls, fragile objects, power strips, or doorways. These strips should be placed flat against the floor, forming a closed loop around objects or between fixed objects like door frames.
  • Charging: The robot automatically returns to its charging dock when the cleaning cycle is complete or the battery is low. The charging dock should be placed on a level surface against a wall, with at least 3 feet (1 meter) of clear space on either side and 5 feet (1.52 meters) in front. The dock must remain plugged in for the robot to find it. The robot beeps when it starts charging. If the robot has no charge or cannot return to the dock, it can be placed on the dock manually, ensuring the charging contacts align.
  • Power and Indicators: The robot has a power button on its side, which must be in the ON position (I) for charging and operation. Blue charge indicator lights display the remaining battery charge, cycling while charging and illuminating steadily when fully charged. An "!" error indicator light signals various error codes, and a Wi-Fi indicator light shows the robot's connectivity status (blue for connected, red for not connected, flashing blue for setup mode, no light for not set up).
  • Cleaning Modes:
    • Clean Button: Initiates a long-running cleaning session. Pressing it again stops the robot.
    • Dock Button: Stops cleaning and sends the robot back to the charging dock.
    • Max Mode Button: Activates a more powerful cleaning mode.
  • Low-Clearance Furniture: To prevent the robot from getting trapped under low-clearance furniture, users can use furniture risers or BotBoundary strips.
  • Doorway Thresholds: For high thresholds that the robot may struggle to clear, BotBoundary strips can be used to block them off.
  • App and Voice Control: The Shark ION Robot app allows remote control, scheduling, and access to support. Voice commands via Google Assistant ("OK Google, tell Shark to start cleaning.") or Amazon Alexa ("Alexa, tell Shark to start cleaning.") enable hands-free operation.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of the robot vacuum.

  • Dust Bin: The dust bin should be emptied after each use. To do this, press the Dust Bin Release Button, slide out the dust bin, then press and hold the button while lifting the lid to open it. Debris and dust can then be emptied into the trash.
  • Filter: The filter should be cleaned weekly and replaced every two months. After emptying the dust bin, pull the filter out by its tabs. Lightly tap the filter to remove dust and debris, then reinsert it into the dust bin and slide the dust bin back into the robot.
  • Brushroll: The brushroll should be cleaned weekly and replaced every 6 to 12 months, or when visibly worn. To access it, push up on the tabs of the brushroll access door, lift off the door, and then lift out the brushroll. Remove the cap on the end of the brushroll, clean off any hair or debris, and then replace the cap. Clean the brushroll periodically, especially when hair appears. Reinstall the brushroll by inserting the flat end first, closing the access door, and pressing down until it clicks into place.
  • Side Brushes: Side brushes should be cleaned as needed, checked weekly, and replaced when visibly worn. Carefully unwind and remove any string or hair wrapped around the brushes. Gently wipe them with a damp cloth and allow them to air-dry completely before reinstalling. To remove a brush, lift it off its peg.
  • Sensors and Charging Pads: The sensors and charging pads located on the bottom of the robot should be cleaned periodically as needed with a dry cloth or cleaning brush. This ensures proper functioning of cliff sensors, which prevent the robot from falling down stairs or steep drops.
  • Wheels: The front caster wheel should be removed and cleaned weekly, and replaced every 12 months. Pull it from its housing and remove any debris buildup. Clean the wheel housing, then reinsert the caster wheel. The drive wheel housing should also be cleaned periodically by rotating the wheel while dusting.
  • Battery: The battery is rechargeable and should be fully charged before initial use. To preserve battery life, turn off the power switch if the robot will not be used for a long period, and recharge the unit at least once every three months. When the battery needs replacement, turn the unit over, unscrew the battery cover, unplug the old battery, and plug in the new one. Dispose of the old battery according to local ordinances and regulations, as it is a lithium-ion battery.
