Overview

The Sharp SMD2470AS and SMD3070AS are Microwave Drawer models designed for home use. These appliances offer a convenient and efficient way to heat, cook, and defrost various foods using microwave energy.

Function Description:

The Microwave Drawer functions as a conventional microwave oven, but with a unique drawer design that allows for easier loading and unloading of food, especially for larger or heavier items. It is specifically designed for food preparation and should not be used for industrial or laboratory purposes, or for drying clothes or newspapers. The appliance utilizes a magnetron to generate microwave energy for cooking.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Output: 1000 watts, as rated by the IEC Test Procedure. This power level is suitable for a wide range of cooking and reheating tasks.
  • Capacity: The drawer design accommodates various dish sizes, but users should ensure that the food and container are shorter than the drawer's side walls to allow for proper closing.
  • Grounding: The appliance must be properly grounded, equipped with a cord having a grounding wire and plug, and connected to a wall receptacle installed and grounded according to the National Electrical Code and local ordinances.
  • Electrical Circuit: It is recommended that the Microwave Drawer be on a different electrical circuit from other appliances to avoid interference.

Usage Features:

The Microwave Drawer offers a comprehensive set of features designed for ease of use and versatile cooking:

Control Panel:

The unit features a hidden control panel and keysheet, which can be pulled down for full view and pushed up to close. The panel is secured by magnetic latches in both open and closed positions.

Time Cooking:

  • Allows programming for up to 99 minutes and 99 seconds (99.99). Seconds must always be entered after minutes, even if they are zero.
  • Power Levels: Eleven preset power levels are available, from 100% (High) down to 0%. Lower power levels are recommended for delicate foods like cheese, milk, and for long, slow cooking of meats.
  • Multiple Sequence Cooking: The drawer can be programmed for up to four automatic cooking sequences, allowing for automatic switching between different power levels. Keep Warm can also be programmed with cooking sequences.

Sensor Settings:

  • Sharp's Sensor technology uses a semi-conductor device to detect vapor (moisture and humidity) emitted from food during heating. This allows the sensor to adjust cooking times and power levels automatically for various foods and quantities.
  • Sensor Categories: Includes POPCORN, REHEAT, POTATOES, VEGETABLES, and COOK.
  • Preparation for Sensor Use: Ensure the exterior of the cooking container and the interior of the Microwave Drawer are dry. Food should be at normal storage temperature.
  • Sensor Operation: During the initial phase, the food name appears on the display. The drawer should not be opened, and STOP/CLEAR should not be touched to avoid interrupting vapor measurement. Once vapor is detected, the remaining cooking/reheating time will appear, and the drawer can be opened for stirring or seasoning.
  • Error Handling: If the sensor does not detect vapor properly (except for Popcorn), an ERROR message will be displayed, and the microwave will turn off.
  • Cooking Hints: Each sensor food setting includes a cooking hint accessible by touching the HELP/SETTINGS pad when the HELP indicator is lighted.

Specific Sensor Programs:

  • POPCORN: For microwave-packaged popcorn only. Users can select between regular (2.85 - 3.5 oz.) and mini/snack (1.2 - 1.75 oz.) sizes.
  • REHEAT: For reheating 4 - 36 oz. of food. Foods should be placed in a dish or casserole, covered with a lid, plastic wrap, or wax paper, and stirred after reheating.
  • POTATOES: For 1-6 medium potatoes. Potatoes should be pierced, placed on a paper-towel-lined drawer, and allowed to stand after cooking. Options for Baked Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes.
  • VEGETABLES:
    • Quick Fresh Vegetables: For .25 - 2.0 lb. of broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, zucchini, or 2-4 medium baked apples. Vegetables should be washed and placed in a casserole, covered.
    • Longer Fresh Vegetables: For .25 - 1.5 lb. of sliced carrots, green beans, diced winter squash, or 2-4 corn on the cob, or 1-2 winter squash halves. Placed in a casserole with 1-4 tablespoons of water, covered.
    • Steamer Bag: For 6-17 oz. steamer bags, following package instructions.
    • Frozen Vegetables: For .25 - 1.25 lb. of frozen vegetables, with no water added, covered.
  • COOK:
    • Ground Meat: For .25 - 2.0 lb. of ground beef or turkey (patties or in casserole). Patties on a microwave-safe rack, covered with wax paper. Casserole meat covered with wax paper or plastic wrap. Turn patties or stir meat halfway through.
    • Fish/Seafood: For .25 - 2.0 lb. Arranged in a ring in a shallow glass dish, covered with vented plastic wrap.
    • Frozen Entrees: For 6-17 oz. frozen convenience foods. Remove outer wrapping and follow package directions.
    • White Rice/Brown Rice: For .5 - 2.0 cups. Placed in a deep casserole with double quantity of water, covered. Stir after cooking.

Beverage:

  • Beverage Reheat: For .5 - 2.0 cups of cooled beverages.
  • Hot Water: For 1-6 cups of cold tap water for instant coffee or tea. Stir briskly before and after heating to avoid "eruption."
  • Hot Cereal: For 1-6 servings of individual packets or bulk cereal. Use a large container to prevent boilovers.

Defrost:

  • Defrost Categories: Includes Ground Meat, Steaks/Chops, Boneless Poultry, Bone-in Poultry, Roast, Casserole and Soup.
  • Procedure: After each audible signal, remove thawed pieces, rearrange, and shield warm portions with aluminum foil.
  • Manual Defrost: For foods not listed or outside the weight limits of the DEFROST CHART, manual defrosting at 30% power is recommended (approx. 4 minutes per pound). Stop periodically to remove thawed portions.

Melt/Soften:

  • Automatically computes heating time and power level for melting, softening, and warming.
  • Melt: Butter (2 tbsp, .5 cup), Chocolate (1 cup chips, 1 square). Use a Pyrex measuring cup, covered with plastic wrap.
  • Soften: Ice Cream (1 pint, 1 1/2 qt.), Cream Cheese (3 oz., 8 oz.). DO NOT COVER.
  • Warm: Syrup (1/4 cup, 1/2 cup), Dessert Toppings (1/4 cup, 1/2 cup). Use a Pyrex measuring cup, DO NOT COVER.

Keep Warm:

  • Keeps food warm for up to 30 minutes. Can be used directly or programmed with manual cooking. Not compatible with Sensor settings, BEVERAGE, or DEFROST.

+30 SEC:

  • Cooks for 30 seconds at 100% power. Can also extend cooking time in multiples of 30 seconds during manual cooking. Can be used within 3 minutes after cooking, closing the drawer, or touching STOP/CLEAR. Not compatible with Sensor settings, REHEAT, or DEFROST.

More or Less Time Adjustment:

  • Allows users to adjust REHEAT or DEFROST settings for slightly more or less doneness by touching the POWER LEVEL pad once (MORE) or twice (LESS) after selection.

Other Features:

  • Control Lock: Prevents unwanted operation, useful for child safety. Can be locked in either the open or closed position. Activated by holding STOP/CLEAR for 3 seconds (LOCK ON). Deactivated by holding STOP/CLEAR for 3 seconds (LOCK OFF).
  • Audible Signal Elimination: Allows users to turn off the end-of-cook beeps for quiet operation.
  • End of Cooking Reminder: Signals every 10 seconds for the first minute, then every 3 minutes for up to an hour, until STOP/CLEAR is touched. Can be turned off or on.
  • Auto Start: Programs the Microwave Drawer to begin cooking automatically at a designated time.
  • Demonstration Mode: Allows users to explore features without heating.
  • Sleep Mode: The display backlight automatically turns off after 15 minutes of inactivity. Touching the control panel or opening/closing the door turns the backlight on. This feature can be deactivated.

Maintenance Features:

  • Exterior Cleaning: Precoated metal and plastic surfaces should be cleaned with mild soap and water, rinsed, and dried with a soft cloth. Stainless steel surfaces should be wiped often with a soft damp cloth and polished with a soft dry cloth or specialized stainless steel cleaner.
  • Front Side of the Drawer: Window and metal parts should be wiped with a soft damp cloth to remove spills or spatters.
  • Touch Control Panel: Wipe with a cloth dampened slightly with water. Avoid scrubbing or using chemical cleaners.
  • Interior Cleaning: Easy due to no heat generation on interior surfaces. Wipe with a soft damp cloth. DO NOT use abrasive or harsh cleaners or scouring pads. For heavier soil, use mild soap.
  • Microwave Drawer Guides: Remove food crumbs and wipe with a soft dry cloth for smooth opening and closing.
  • Waveguide Cover: Located on the inside top of the drawer, made from mica. Keep clean by wiping food spatters immediately with a soft damp cloth to ensure good microwave performance and prevent overheating or fire. Do not remove the cover.
  • Odor Removal: To remove cooking odors, combine water, grated lemon peel and juice, and cloves in a glass measuring cup, boil at 100% power for several minutes, then let cool in the drawer before wiping the interior.
