brush or wipe stylus from front to back or side to side.
TO PRESERVE STYLUS LIFE:
1. Follow turntable or tone arm instructions when adjusting antlskating
force.
2. Do not handle the tone arm while it is in operation since this may

Overview

The Shure M44G Stereo Dynetic® Phonograph Cartridge is a high-quality audio component designed for exceptional sound reproduction from vinyl records. As part of "The Premier Family of Stereo Sound Reproducers," it is engineered to deliver a balanced and clear audio experience for both stereo and monophonic playback.

Function Description

The M44G cartridge converts the mechanical vibrations from a record's groove into electrical signals, which are then amplified and played through a sound system. It utilizes a "Dynetic" design, a term Shure uses to describe its moving magnet cartridges, known for their robust construction and reliable performance. The cartridge is designed to be mounted on a turntable's tonearm, where its stylus tracks the record grooves. The M44G is versatile, offering different stylus options (N44G, N44-1, N44-3) to accommodate various record types, including standard 33-1/3 rpm LPs and 78 rpm records. Its primary function is to provide accurate and detailed sound reproduction, ensuring a faithful translation of the recorded audio.

Important Technical Specifications

The M44G cartridge boasts several key technical specifications that contribute to its performance:

  • Output Voltage:
    • N44G (Gray, 15 microns/0.0006 in. Spherical): 6.2 mV at 5 cm/sec peak recorded velocity (1 kHz).
    • N44-1 (Dark Blue, 26 microns/0.001 in. Spherical): 9.5 mV at 5 cm/sec peak recorded velocity (1 kHz).
    • N44-3 (Dark Green, 64 microns/0.0025 in. Spherical): 9.5 mV at 5 cm/sec peak recorded velocity (1 kHz).
    • Note: For mono cut records, the output voltage at both left and right channel cartridge terminals will be 71% of the figures above.
  • Frequency Response: 20 to 20,000 Hz for all stylus types, with a flat response within 2 dB.
  • Channel Balance: Within 2 dB.
  • Channel Separation: 20 dB minimum.
  • Tracking Force:
    • N44G: 0.75 to 1.5 grams.
    • N44-1: 1.5 to 3 grams.
    • N44-3: 1.5 to 3 grams.
    • Important: Tracking forces greater than the maximum indicated should not be used.
  • Trackability (cm/sec peak recorded velocity):
    • N44G: 11.3 cm/sec at 400 Hz (at 0.75 grams tracking force).
    • N44-1: 14.3 cm/sec at 400 Hz (at 1.5 grams tracking force).
    • N44-3: 14.3 cm/sec at 400 Hz (at 1.5 grams tracking force).
  • Net Weight: 6.5 grams.
  • Inductance: 720 millihenries.
  • DC Resistance: 630 ohms.
  • Optimum Load: 47,000 ohms resistance in parallel with 400 to 500 picofarads total capacitance per channel. Load resistance can be up to 70,000 ohms with almost no audible change in frequency response. Total capacitance includes both tonearm wiring and amplifier input circuit.
  • Mounting Centers: 12.7 mm (1/2 inch).

Usage Features

The Shure M44G is designed for straightforward installation and flexible use:

  • Monophonic Operation: For playing mono records, the amplifier's function switch should be set to "MONO" or "A+B." If the amplifier lacks this switch, the left and right channels should be connected in parallel.
  • Connections: The cartridge features clearly labeled terminals for easy connection:
    • Right "hot" lead (usually red) to "R."
    • Right ground (usually green) to "RG."
    • Left "hot" lead (usually white) to "L."
    • Left ground (usually blue) to "LG."
    • A ground tab is provided, connecting the right channel ground terminal to the case. If a metal headshell causes ground loop hum, this tab can be removed to disconnect the metallic cartridge shield from the right channel ground.
    • Caution: Do not make solder connections directly to the cartridge terminals.
  • Stylus Replacement: The stylus is easily replaceable. To remove, grasp the molded housing and gently pull it forward out of the cartridge. To insert a new stylus, press it into the socket until the housing mates with the cartridge case.
  • Mounting: Mounting screws are provided. The process involves removing the stylus guard and stylus, connecting leads, aligning the cartridge in the headshell, and then reinserting the stylus. Users should follow the turntable manufacturer's instructions for mounting the cartridge in the tonearm or plug-in shell.
  • Stylus Options: The availability of N44G, N44-1, and N44-3 styli allows users to optimize playback for different record types and tracking force preferences. The N44-1 is an optional 33-1/3 rpm MONO-LP stylus, and the N44-3 is an optional 78 rpm stylus, both requiring the amplifier to be set to "MONO" or "A+B."

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is crucial for extending the life of the M44G cartridge and its stylus, ensuring optimal performance:

  • Recommended Stylus Cleaning: Use a camel's hair brush (No. 2 size or smaller), trimmed to approximately 6 mm (1/4 in.), dipped in alcohol or an alcohol-distilled water solution. Commercial cleaning solutions may cause stylus damage or corrosion. Always brush the stylus from back to front; never brush or wipe from front to back or side to side.
  • Preserving Stylus Life:
    1. Follow turntable or tonearm instructions when adjusting antiskating force.
    2. Do not handle the tonearm while it is in operation, as this may cause the arm to sweep across the record.
    3. If manually placing the tonearm in the record groove while the turntable is rotating, release it as soon as the stylus engages the groove.
    4. Correct improper set-down adjustment or malfunction of the turntable changing mechanism to prevent the stylus from striking the edge of the turntable or record. Do not stack more records than the turntable manufacturer recommends.
    5. Take care to properly insert the stylus into the cartridge assembly and the cartridge and shell assembly into the tonearm receptacle.
    6. Use the proper vertical tracking force setting for each cartridge.
    7. Do not use badly warped, cracked, or imperfect records.
    8. When dusting the turntable, protect the stylus with the stylus guard.
  • Genuine Stylus Certification: To maintain original performance standards, any replacement stylus must bear the certification: "This Stereo Dynetic® stylus is precision manufactured by Shure Brothers Inc." Users are warned to avoid inferior imitations that will degrade performance. Genuine "Dynetic" styli are manufactured by Shure Brothers Inc., and the name "SHURE" should be visible on the stylus grip. Shure offers a pamphlet, "Don't be penny-wise and sound foolish" (AL633), for more information on their styli.
  • Warranty: Shure Brothers Incorporated provides a full one-year warranty from the date of purchase, covering defects in workmanship and materials under normal use. Proof of purchase should be retained. The warranty does not cover stylus wear. If a product is defective, it should be carefully repacked and returned prepaid to Shure's Service Department. For international customers, units should be returned to the dealer or Authorized Service Center.
