ABAFT: Toward the rear of the yacht.
ABEAM: At right angles to the yacht’s
keel.
ABOARD: On the yacht.
ABREAST: Side by side.
ADRIFT: Loose. Not on a mooring or tow
line.
AGROUND: Stuck fast on the bottom.
AHEAD: In a forward motion.
Amidships: (1) The area midway between
the bow and the stern of the yacht. (2) The
area between the Port and Starboard side
of the yacht.
AMPERE: The standard unit to measure
the strength of electrical current.
ASTERN: (1) In the rear area of the yacht.
(2) Direction of travel when the yacht moves
in reverse.
ATHWARTSHIP: Movement from Port to
Starboard or Starboard to Port.
BEAM: (1) The widest distance across the
yacht. (2) A transverse structural member
that stiffens and supports a portion of the
deck.
BILGE: The interior area of the hull below
the waterline.
BILGE PUMP: A pump used to remove wa-
ter that has drained into the yacht’s bilge.
BOW: The forward end of the yacht.
BOW LINE: A docking line leading from the
yacht’s bow.
BULKHEADS: The interior walls of the
yacht.
CAST OFF: Let go.
CHINE: The point where the bottom and
side of the hull meet.
CHOCK: A tting or hole through a yacht’s
deck through which a mooring or anchor
line is routed.
CIRCUIT BREAKER: A device used to in-
terrupt an electrical current when the current
ow exceeds a predetermined level.
CLEAT: A tting on a yacht’s deck on which
a mooring or anchor line is tied.
COCKPIT: An exposed aft deck area sub-
stantially lower than the forward adjacent
deck.
COMPANIONWAY: The steps or ladder
leading from the deck to the cabin of the
yacht.
COMPARTMENTS: Rooms or spaces di-
vided by bulkheads.
CRADLE: A wooden framework used to
support a yacht when it is on land.
CURRENT: The movement of water.
DEAD AHEAD: Directly in front of the
yacht.
DINGHY: A small open boat used for ship
to shore transportation.
