The SINGER ESP 2 Fabric Steam Press is a household appliance designed to provide professional-quality pressing results, offering a significant reduction in ironing time compared to traditional hand-held irons. Its large pressing surface, which is fourteen times larger than most hand-held irons, allows for efficient and quick pressing of various fabrics.
Function Description
The primary function of the SINGER ESP 2 is to press fabrics using a combination of heat and steam. It features a temperature-controlled Pressing Plate that lowers onto an Ironing Board, applying pressure and heat to smooth out wrinkles. The device offers multiple dry and steam settings, including a powerful burst setting to tackle stubborn wrinkles. A variable temperature control allows users to select the appropriate heat setting for different fabric types, protecting delicate materials like silk from damage.
For enhanced safety and energy efficiency, the steam press incorporates an automatic shut-off feature. This system deactivates electrical power to the heater if the Pressing Plate is left closed against the Ironing Board for more than 10 seconds, or if the Pressing Plate remains in the raised position without use for approximately 15 minutes. Both instances are signaled by a beeping sound. Heater functionality is restored by raising the Pressing Plate or by pressing the Temperature Control Buttons, respectively. It's important to note that the auto shut-off only cuts power to the heater; the unit itself remains powered on, indicated by the illuminated Power Indicator Light, until the On/Off Switch is set to "Off."
Usage Features
Operating the SINGER ESP 2 is designed to be straightforward. Before use, the Water Reservoir must be filled with distilled water using the provided Measuring Cup, up to the MAX (300ml) line. The unit should not be plugged in during this process. The Locking Knob allows the Pressing Plate to be secured for carrying or storage and unlocked for operation.
Once filled and plugged in, the user turns the ON/OFF Switch to "on." The Power Indicator Light illuminates, confirming the unit is powered. The desired temperature setting is selected using the Temperature Control Buttons, with indicator lights beneath each fabric type (Nylon, Silk, Wool, Cotton, Linen) showing the active selection. It is recommended to start with more delicate fabrics and gradually increase the heat as needed.
The Pressing Indicator Light illuminates while the unit heats up and deactivates when the selected temperature is reached, signaling readiness for pressing. For steam functions, the Steam Ready Indicator Light illuminates when the unit is ready to produce bursts of steam.
To press, fabric is laid flat on the Ironing Board. The Pressing Handle is used to gently lower the Pressing Plate onto the fabric for 6-8 seconds, then lifted. This process is repeated until the desired smoothness is achieved. For stubborn wrinkles or wool fabrics, the Steam Burst Buttons, located on either side of the Pressing Handle, can be pressed to release a burst of steam. For best results with steam bursts, the Pressing Plate should be held approximately 75 mm (3 inches) above the Ironing Board, and the button pressed for 2 seconds before releasing.
The SINGER ESP 2 includes a Pressing Cushion, a fabric-covered pad, which is particularly useful for pressing gathered or contoured areas such as sleeves, darts, and yokes. It can also be placed between the fabric and the Pressing Plate for delicate items or under buttons and zippers to prevent melting. A Spray Bottle is also included to lightly moisten fabrics before pressing, aiding in wrinkle removal. For larger items, the fabric can be placed behind the Ironing Board and pulled over it in sections for pressing.
Maintenance Features
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the steam press. After each use, the ON/OFF Switch should be set to "off," and the unit unplugged. It is crucial to allow the appliance to cool completely for at least thirty minutes before storing.
Cleaning the Pressing Plate involves placing the Pressing Cushion in the middle of the Ironing Board, covering it with a clean towel, and setting the temperature control to its highest setting (LINEN). Once the Steam Burst Ready Indicator Light illuminates, the Pressing Plate is lowered onto the pressing cushion, and the steam burst button is pressed six times. After allowing the Pressing Plate to cool, it can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Abrasives should not be used, as they can damage the plate.
The Ironing Board cover is removable and can be hand-washed with a mild detergent for cleaning.
For storage, once the unit is cool, the pressing plate is lowered, and the Locking Knob is turned to "Lock" position. The power cord can be wrapped and placed in the Cord Storage Compartment. All accessories should be stored safely, preferably near the steam press, in a cool, dry place. For long-term storage, it is recommended to periodically press the steam button to use up any remaining water in the reservoir.
The manual also provides troubleshooting tips for common issues such as the unit failing to steam, the power indicator light not illuminating, or weak steam output, guiding users to potential causes and solutions before seeking professional service.
