Do you have a question about the Sleipner 8730B and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Sleipner S-link External Switch Interface (models 8730B and 8730S) is a crucial component for integrating external control options, such as mechanical foot switches or radio remote controls, with Sleipner S-link bow and stern thrusters. This interface acts as a bridge, translating simple switch inputs into proportional thrust commands for the S-link system.

Function Description

The primary function of the 8730 external switch interface is to enable the control of S-link bow thrusters using external, normally open switches. This includes mechanical foot switches, which offer hands-free operation, and the Sleipner 8980/8985 radio remote control for wireless convenience. The interface is designed to send proportional thrust commands over the S-link bus. By default, this proportional thrust is set to 70%, but this value can be adjusted using a PJC212, PJC211, PJC222, or PJC221 panel, providing flexibility in thrust control.

For vessels equipped with both bow and stern thrusters, two 8730 units are required: one 8730B for the bow thruster and one 8730S for the stern thruster. The instance (bow or stern) of the 8730 units can be configured via a control panel, as detailed in the respective panel manuals.

The interface requires activation to function. There are two primary solutions for activating the 8730:

  1. Control Panel Activation (Preferred Solution): The 8730 can be activated by turning a control panel ON. When the last panel is turned OFF (either by time-out or an OFF button), the 8730 will deactivate. This method is generally preferred for its integrated control.
  2. Constant Activation: By connecting a wire from pin 1 to pin 6 on the 6-pin connector, the 8730 will remain activated as long as there is power on the S-link. However, this solution has limitations: it cannot be used with retract thrusters or Automatic Main Switches, as it would prevent retract thrusters from retracting and the AMS from turning off.

The interface is designed to work exclusively with Sleipner thrusters that utilize an S-link control system. It is critical to avoid connecting any other control equipment to the S-link controlled products unless they are original Sleipner S-link products or a Sleipner-supplied interface specifically designed for such integration. Any unauthorized connection attempts will void all warranties and responsibilities for the entire S-link product line.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Compatibility: Exclusively with Sleipner S-link control systems and thrusters.
  • Input Type: Designed for normally open mechanical switches (e.g., foot switches) and Sleipner 8980/8985 radio remote control.
  • Output: Proportional thrust commands over the S-link bus.
  • Default Proportional Thrust: 70% (adjustable via PJC series panels).
  • Configuration: Requires one 8730B for bow thrusters and one 8730S for stern thrusters in dual-thruster setups. Instance (bow/stern) is configurable via control panels.
  • Activation: Can be activated via a control panel or by a direct wire connection (with limitations for retract thrusters/AMS).
  • Connections:
    • S-link Spur cable connection (green connector with locking ring).
    • Dedicated terminals for foot switch inputs (port and starboard).
    • Dedicated terminals for radio remote control connection.
    • 4-pin connector for thruster enable signal (when using other control units).
  • Mounting: Should be mounted in a location protected from direct and condensed water ingress.

Usage Features

  • Flexible Control Options: Allows for the integration of various external control devices, enhancing user convenience and operational flexibility. Foot switches provide hands-free control, which can be particularly useful during docking maneuvers, while radio remote controls offer freedom of movement around the vessel.
  • Proportional Thrust Control: The ability to send proportional thrust signals ensures smooth and precise maneuvering, which is crucial for delicate operations. The adjustable default thrust value allows customization to suit different vessel types and user preferences.
  • Dual Thruster Support: The system is designed to accommodate both bow and stern thrusters, requiring separate 8730 units for each, ensuring independent and precise control over both ends of the vessel.
  • Easy Integration: The interface is designed for straightforward connection to existing S-link systems, with clear wiring diagrams provided for foot switches, radio remote controls, and thruster enable signals.
  • System Setup and Diagnostics: For optimal performance and troubleshooting, a Double Joystick Panel 8940 or similar control panel is recommended for initial setup and diagnostics. This panel allows for configuration of the 8730's instance (bow/stern) and adjustment of proportional thrust settings.

Maintenance Features

  • Protected Mounting: The recommendation to mount the 8730 in a location protected from direct and condensed water ingress helps to prolong the life of the unit and reduce the need for maintenance due to environmental damage.
  • Clear Wiring Diagrams: Detailed wiring diagrams facilitate correct installation and make troubleshooting easier if issues arise. This clarity helps installers and technicians quickly identify and resolve connection problems.
  • System Diagnostics via Control Panels: The ability to adjust settings and potentially diagnose issues through compatible S-link control panels (PJC series) simplifies maintenance and configuration tasks, reducing the need for specialized tools or extensive manual checks.
  • Component Replacement: As part of the Sleipner S-link system, individual components like the 8730 interface are designed to be replaceable, ensuring that the overall system can be maintained and repaired efficiently.
  • Warranty and Support: Sleipner provides a warranty for its products, emphasizing the importance of correct installation and adherence to guidelines. Access to a worldwide network of certified professional dealers and online resources (www.sleipnergroup.com/support) ensures that users can obtain expert service, support, and genuine spare parts when needed. This support infrastructure is crucial for long-term maintenance and operational reliability.
