Overview

This document provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, use, and maintenance of a Smeg FAB 28 refrigerator, designed for domestic use. It covers safety precautions, product features, operational settings, and troubleshooting.

Function Description

The Smeg FAB 28 refrigerator is designed for the refrigeration and storage of fresh and frozen foods, as well as the production of ice-cubes. It features two main compartments:

  • Refrigerator Compartment (A): For storing fresh foods. This compartment includes multiple shelves, a bottle shelf, and a fruit and vegetable box. It has an automatic defrosting system.
  • Freezer Compartment (B): For storing frozen foods and for freezing fresh foods. This compartment requires manual defrosting.

The appliance utilizes a compression system for cooling, with a compressor that operates in response to the required cooling level. A fan helps distribute temperature evenly and reduces condensation on the shelves within the refrigerator compartment.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Climate Class: The appliance's climate class (SN, N, ST, T) is indicated on the nameplate inside the refrigerator compartment, determining suitable ambient temperature conditions:
    • SN (Subnormal): from +10°C to +32°C
    • N (Normal): from +16°C to +32°C
    • ST (Subtropical): from +18°C to +38°C
    • T (Tropical): from +18°C to +43°C
  • Refrigerant Gas: The refrigerator contains isobutane (R600a), which is CFC-free but combustible.
  • Electrical Connection: The rated voltage and frequency are stated on the nameplate. The appliance can withstand short voltage fluctuations of no more than 15% less or 10% more than the rated voltage. It requires an earthed electrical system.
  • Light Bulb: The internal light bulb is an E14, max 15 W type.
  • Freezing Capacity: The maximum amount of fresh foods that can be frozen in a 24-hour period is marked on the nameplate.

Usage Features

  • Installation:
    • Must be placed in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources (at least 3 cm from electric/gas cookers, 30 cm from combustion/radiation heating systems).
    • Two plastic spacers are provided for proper condenser cooling, to be fitted to the top of the condenser.
    • If installed under a wall cupboard, a minimum distance of 5 cm is required.
    • The appliance should be level, using the two adjustable feet at the front. Two additional wheels at the rear aid movement.
    • After positioning, leave vertical for at least two hours before connecting to the electrical mains.
  • Door Operation: Pull the handle to open; push the door towards its hook until it snaps shut to close.
  • Shelves: Multiple shelves are provided, adjustable to different heights using runners. They have a safety fitting to prevent accidental removal. To remove, lift at the back and extract.
  • Bottle Shelf: Can be set horizontally or with the front raised for slanted bottle placement. Ensure it does not prevent the door from closing if placing long bottles.
  • Temperature Setting: A knob in the top right-hand corner controls the operating temperature for both compartments, with settings from 1 to 7 (0 switches off the appliance). Higher numbers reduce internal temperature. A medium-low setting (2-3) is recommended for normal operating conditions.
  • Food Arrangement:
    • Foods should be in airtight wrapping or covered to preserve freshness, prevent cross-contamination, and control humidity.
    • Use only approved food storage containers.
    • Allow hot foods and drinks to cool to room temperature before placing them inside.
    • Do not store explosive substances or high-alcohol drinks that are not firmly sealed and vertical.
  • Freezing Foods:
    • Pack fruit and vegetables in portions up to 1 kg, and meat/fish up to 2 kg.
    • Use freezer bags, aluminium film, food-approved polyethylene film, or freezer containers.
    • Expel air from packs and seal tightly.
    • Cool hot foods to room temperature before freezing.
    • Do not allow frozen foods to touch fresh foods.
    • Mark packs with freezing date, quantity, and food type.
    • Do not exceed the maximum freezing capacity stated on the nameplate.
  • Storing Frozen Foods:
    • Check that packs are undamaged, within sell-by date, and stored at -18°C or below at the point of purchase.
    • Protect with insulated containers during transport.
    • Avoid purchasing foods with excessive frost, indicating prior thawing.
  • Thawing Frozen Foods:
    • Eat partially thawed foods as soon as possible.
    • Thaw at room temperature, in the refrigerator, or in an electric/microwave oven using relevant functions.
    • Cooked thawed foods can be re-frozen once cooled.
  • Making Ice-cubes: Fill the provided tray 2/3 full with water or liquid, place in the freezer compartment with a dry bottom. Twist or run under water to detach.

Maintenance Features

  • Refrigerator Defrosting: Automatic. Frost on the back wall melts when the compressor is off, and water drains into a tray on the compressor for evaporation.
  • Freezer Defrosting: Manual. Defrost when frost/ice exceeds 2 cm. Set thermostat to 7 a few hours before, then to 0 and disconnect power. Remove frozen foods and protect them. Place a container to collect defrosted water.
  • Cleaning:
    • Disconnect from power before cleaning.
    • Clean outside with water and a gentle liquid detergent or ordinary detergent for washable surfaces. Avoid abrasives, acids, or chemical solvents.
    • Do not use steam cleaners inside. Specific disinfectants are recommended.
    • Remove shelves and accessories carefully. Do not wash plastic parts in a dishwasher; use warm water with washing-up liquid or water and vinegar.
    • Avoid wetting electrical lighting components.
    • Clean gaskets with warm water and dry.
    • Periodically clean the condenser on the rear with a brush or vacuum cleaner.
    • Check and clean the tray above the compressor.
  • Switching Off: For long periods of disuse, turn thermostat to 0, empty compartments, disconnect power, dry residual moisture, and leave the door ajar to prevent odors.
  • Light Bulb Replacement: Disconnect power. Unscrew the bulb (E14, max 15 W) and replace with a new one, screwing it back in the opposite direction.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual provides a detailed guide for common issues, their possible causes, and probable solutions, covering noisy operation, compressor issues, insufficient cooling, condensation, and door problems.
  • After-Sales Service: Instructions for contacting authorized Smeg After-Sales Service, including providing the product model and serial number from the nameplate.
