Overview

The RENASYS TOUCH is a Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) device designed for the management of wounds. It offers both continuous and intermittent therapy modes, providing flexibility in treatment protocols. The device features a user-friendly touchscreen interface that guides the user through various operations, from setting up therapy to checking for a proper seal.

Function Description:

The primary function of the RENASYS TOUCH is to deliver negative pressure to a wound site, which can help promote wound healing by removing exudate, reducing edema, and increasing blood flow. The device can operate in two distinct therapy modes:

  • Continuous Therapy: In this mode, a constant negative pressure is applied to the wound. Users can select a prescribed pressure setting using the on-screen controls.
  • Intermittent Therapy: This mode applies negative pressure in cycles, alternating between high and low pressure settings for specified durations. Users can adjust both the high and low pressure settings, as well as their respective cycle times, to tailor the therapy to the patient's needs.

The device incorporates a "seal checking" feature to ensure effective therapy delivery. After applying the dressing, the device provides on-screen instructions to help the user achieve a proper seal. Once a seal is achieved, the screen displays "seal achieved" and then "delivering therapy." This feature is crucial for the efficacy of NPWT, as a compromised seal can lead to reduced therapeutic effect.

Usage Features:

The RENASYS TOUCH is designed for ease of use, with several features aimed at simplifying operation for both clinicians and patients:

  • Intuitive Touchscreen Interface: The device is operated via a touchscreen, displaying clear icons and instructions. This allows for straightforward navigation and selection of settings.
  • Therapy Mode Toggle: A dedicated "therapy mode toggle" button on the home screen allows users to switch between continuous and intermittent therapy modes when therapy is paused.
  • Pressure Adjustment: For continuous therapy, "+" and "-" buttons enable precise adjustment of the prescribed pressure setting. For intermittent therapy, similar controls allow for adjustment of high and low pressure settings and cycle times.
  • Start/Pause Button: A prominent Start/Pause therapy button initiates and suspends therapy delivery, providing immediate control over the treatment.
  • Status Indicators: The device includes visual indicators to provide immediate feedback on its operational status. A status indicator on top of the device illuminates green when therapy is active, and a therapy indicator at the top of the screen rotates orange, offering clear visual cues that therapy is being delivered.
  • Screen Locking Function: To prevent accidental changes during therapy, the touchscreen and Start/Pause therapy icon can be locked. The power icon remains unlocked. Even when locked, the status indicator continues to illuminate green, confirming active therapy. The screen will go dark after a period of inactivity to conserve power, but can be reactivated by pressing the play or lock pad button. In the event of an alarm, the device automatically unlocks and displays the alarm screen. The device will automatically lock and enter Sleep mode after 5 minutes without user interaction.
  • Patient and Clinician Modes: The device supports different user modes, specifically "Patient" and "Clinician" modes. This allows for different levels of access and control over settings. Clinician mode, typically password-protected (e.g., password 3141), offers comprehensive control over therapy parameters, while Patient mode may offer a simplified interface or restricted access to critical settings. This distinction helps ensure that therapy is managed appropriately by qualified personnel while allowing patients to monitor basic status.
  • Visual Seal Check Guidance: The device provides on-screen instructions for checking the seal, guiding users to look for a "raisin-like" appearance of the dressing, listen for "hissing" sounds (indicating a leak), and feel the dressing for hardness. It also identifies possible leak sites such as wrinkles, creases, skin folds, crevices, or where the drain exits the film.
  • Intervention Guidance for Leaks: If a leak is detected, the device or manual provides guidance on intervention, such as sealing film edges with film dressing, patching holes in transparent film with adhesive transparent film, or pinching paste around the drain if a RENASYS drain option is used.

Maintenance Features:

While the manual primarily focuses on operational aspects, certain features contribute to the overall maintenance and reliability of the device:

  • Alarm System: The device is equipped with an alarm system that automatically unlocks the screen and displays an alarm screen in the event of an issue. This immediate notification is crucial for addressing potential problems that could affect therapy delivery or patient safety.
  • Technical Support Information: The inclusion of 24-hour technical support freephone numbers (for UK and Ireland) indicates a commitment to ongoing support and maintenance, allowing users to quickly resolve any technical issues they encounter.

The RENASYS TOUCH is designed to be a reliable and user-friendly NPWT device, offering flexible therapy options and clear guidance for effective wound management. Its intuitive interface, comprehensive status indicators, and robust seal-checking features contribute to its overall utility in a clinical setting.
