Overview

This document describes the Snow Joe® ION18SB-CT 40-Volt 18-Inch Cordless Snow Blower – Core Tool, an operator's manual providing essential information for safe and effective use, maintenance, and storage of the device.

Function Description:

The Snow Joe® ION18SB-CT is a cordless snow blower designed for residential use on paved surfaces. Its primary function is to clear snow efficiently, offering a convenient and powerful solution for snow removal without the constraints of a power cord. The "Core Tool" designation indicates that the battery and charger are not included and must be purchased separately. The snow blower is compatible with EcoSharp® iBAT40 (40V 4.0 Ah) and EcoSharp® PRO iBAT40XR (40V 5.0 Ah) lithium-ion batteries, and EcoSharp® iCHRG40 or EcoSharp® SWIFT iCHRG40QC chargers.

The device features an 18-inch clearing width and an 8-inch depth of snow cut, making it suitable for moderate snowfalls. It can throw snow up to 20 feet (6 meters) and has a plowing capacity of 500 lbs/min (227 kg/min). The 180° auto-rotate chute allows for directional control of the snow stream, while the chute deflector can be adjusted to control the height of the throw. An integrated 3-watt LED light provides illumination for nighttime snow removal.

Safety is a paramount concern, with numerous instructions provided to prevent accidents and ensure proper operation. These include keeping the work area clear of bystanders and foreign objects, wearing appropriate protective gear, and understanding how to safely start, stop, and maneuver the snow blower. The device is designed with a safety switch button and an ON/OFF switch bar lever to prevent unintentional starting.

Usage Features:

The snow blower is designed for user-friendly operation.

  • Assembly: The handles are easily assembled by pulling up the upper frame and securing connections with handle locks and knobs. The chute deflector is lifted and locked into place, and its height can be adjusted by loosening/tightening deflector knobs.
  • Battery Operation: The unit is powered by a lithium-ion battery. A push button on the battery pack allows users to check the charge level via three LED indicators (high, decreasing, flat). The battery pack should be fully charged before first use and frequently charged to avoid low discharge cycles.
  • Charging: The charging process involves pulling the battery pack out of the equipment, connecting the charger to an electrical outlet, and sliding the battery pack into the charger. Indicator lights on the charger show charging status (red for charging, green for fully charged). The charger also indicates temperature abnormalities (flashing red/green) or other errors (flashing red only).
  • Starting the Machine: To start, open the battery compartment, slide the battery in until it clicks, insert the safety key, and close the cover. Then, press the safety switch button and pull the ON/OFF switch lever. The machine will only start if these steps are followed in sequence. To power off, release the ON/OFF switch bar lever.
  • Operating Tips: Users are advised to clear the area of foreign objects before operation, keep children and bystanders away, and be aware of wind direction to avoid snow being thrown back. The snow blower should be pushed gently and evenly, without excessive force. Frozen parts should be thawed before operation. For unpaved surfaces, pushing down on the handle can raise the scraper to avoid throwing loose material. An LED light switch activates the headlight for nighttime use.
  • Changing Throw Direction and Height: The discharge chute can be rotated 180 degrees using a remote switch to control the snow throw direction. The chute deflector on top can be raised or lowered by loosening/tightening knobs to adjust the height of the snow stream.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the snow blower.

  • General Maintenance:
    • Do not attempt repairs without proper tools and instructions.
    • Check bolts and screws frequently for tightness.
    • After each use, run the snow blower for a few minutes to prevent freezing of the collector/impeller, then shut off, allow parts to stop, and wipe off residual ice and snow. Rotate the chute deflector several times to remove excess snow.
  • Battery/Charger Care:
    • Always unplug the charger and remove the battery before maintenance.
    • Never immerse the battery pack or charger in liquid.
    • Clean dust and debris from charger vents and electrical contacts with compressed air.
    • Use only mild soap on a damp cloth to clean the battery pack and charger, avoiding electrical contacts. Avoid harsh cleaning agents and solvents.
    • The EcoSharp® iCHRG40 and iCHR40QC chargers have no serviceable parts.
  • Replacing Rubber Plates: If the rubber plates are worn, they can be replaced by removing the 8 sets of nuts and bolts that secure them. New plates should be inserted in the reverse order of removal.
  • Replacing Scraper Bar: The scraper bar, located at the base of the snow blower, can be replaced by removing the 4 screws holding it in place and then fastening the new bar securely.
  • Storage: Before storing, thoroughly examine the snow blower for worn, loose, or damaged parts and repair as needed. Clean the unit, remove the battery and safety key, and store it indoors in a locked, dry place out of reach of children.
  • Battery/Charger Off-Season Storage: Store the battery pack and charger at room temperature, away from moisture. Recharge the battery pack every 6 months to 50% capacity (2 lights on) during off-season storage to maintain optimal performance. Do not store in temperatures over 120°F (49°C).
  • Disposal: Dispose of battery packs according to federal, state, and local regulations. Cover terminals with electrical tape before disposal to prevent shorting. Never burn or incinerate battery packs.
