Overview

This document describes the Snow Joe iON18SB-HYB-RM Cordless + Electric Hybrid Snow Blower, an 18-inch, 40V MAX*, 13.5-AMP snow removal tool. The manual provides comprehensive safety instructions, operational guidelines, and maintenance procedures to ensure safe and effective use of the device.

Function Description

The Snow Joe iON18SB-HYB-RM is a hybrid snow blower designed for clearing snow from paved surfaces. It can operate in two modes: cordless (DC power) using an EcoSharp® iBAT40 lithium-ion battery pack, or corded (AC power) by connecting to an electrical outlet via an extension cord. This hybrid capability offers flexibility, allowing users to choose between the freedom of cordless operation and the continuous power of a corded connection, depending on the task and available resources. The snow blower features an 18-inch clearing width and a steel auger with two rubber blades, designed to efficiently move light, fluffy snow. It has a maximum throw distance of 20 feet (6 meters) and a plowing capacity of 500 lbs/min (227 kg/min). The device is equipped with a 180° auto-rotate chute for directional control of the snow discharge and an adjustable chute deflector to control the height of the snow stream. For nighttime operation, a 3-watt LED light is integrated into the unit.

Usage Features

The snow blower is designed for ease of assembly and operation. The handle assembly is straightforward, requiring users to pull up the upper frame and secure connections with handle locks, knobs, and J-bolts. Before operation, users must ensure the discharge chute deflector is securely in place and tightened with deflector knobs. The height of the snow stream can be adjusted by loosening and re-tightening these knobs.

For DC power mode, the EcoSharp® iBAT40 lithium-ion battery pack must be inserted into the battery compartment until it clicks into position, and the DC safety switch button must be pressed before pulling the ON/OFF switch bar lever. The battery pack includes a charge level indicator with LED lights to show the remaining capacity. Users are advised to charge the battery when its capacity falls to 30% or 60% and to avoid fully discharging it to prolong its lifespan. The iCHRG40 battery charger is specifically designed for this battery pack and should be used indoors in a well-ventilated area.

For AC power mode, the battery must be removed. A UL-rated outdoor extension cord (e.g., SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A, STOW-A, SJW-A, SJTW-A, or SJTOW-A) is required, with specific wire gauge recommendations based on cord length (14 AWG for less than 50 ft, 12 AWG for 100 ft). The extension cord should be secured using the on-board cord restraint hook or by tying a knot with the appliance cord to prevent accidental disconnection. The AC safety switch button must be pressed before pulling the ON/OFF switch bar lever.

Operating tips emphasize safety and efficiency. Users should clear the work area of foreign objects like rocks, glass, nails, wire, or string, which can be picked up and thrown by the rotor blades, causing serious injury. Maintaining proper footing and balance is crucial, and the snow blower should be pushed gently and evenly without excessive force. The discharge chute should always be oriented away from the operator, bystanders, vehicles, and windows. The chute's direction can be controlled 180 degrees using the remote switch, and the deflector adjusts the throw height. For optimal clearing, users are advised to start their path outward, throwing snow in a back-and-forth motion, overlapping paths, and considering wind direction to avoid throwing snow back onto cleared areas or into their face. The integrated LED light can be activated for nighttime snow removal and its angle adjusted.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the safety and longevity of the snow blower. Before any adjustments, inspections, servicing, or cleaning, the power switch must be turned off, the battery removed, and the power cable disconnected. All guards and safety attachments must be properly installed.

General maintenance tips include checking bolts and screws for tightness at frequent intervals. After each use, the snow blower should be run for a few minutes to prevent the auger/impeller from freezing, then shut off, and residual ice and snow wiped away. The chute deflector should be rotated several times to remove excess snow. The motor and auger are factory-lubricated for lifetime use, so additional lubrication is not necessary and could cause damage.

For battery and charger care, users are instructed to unplug the charger and remove the battery pack before any maintenance. Neither the battery pack nor the charger should be disassembled. They should be protected from moisture, rain, and extreme temperatures (stored in a cool, dry place between 50-104°F for the charger and 50-68°F for the battery, charged to at least 40% capacity). Charging should occur at room temperature, as charging below 50°F (10°C) can damage cells and cause fire. The charger vents and electrical contacts should be cleaned of dust and debris with compressed air. Mild soap on a damp cloth can be used to clean the battery pack and charger, avoiding electrical contacts and harsh cleaning agents.

The manual also provides instructions for replacing worn rubber plates and the scraper bar. When replacing rubber plates, users must pay close attention to the removal order and assemble new plates in reverse order. The scraper bar, located at the base of the snow blower, is detached by removing four screws and then replaced with a new one.

For long-term storage, the snow blower should be thoroughly examined for worn, loose, or damaged parts, cleaned, and the battery removed. It should be stored indoors in a locked, dry place out of reach of children. Battery packs should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture, and recharged every 6 months to 50% capacity to maintain optimal performance. Disposal of battery packs must follow federal, state, and local regulations, with terminals covered by electrical tape to prevent shorting.
