Overview

The document describes the Sun Joe SPX2003 Electric Pressure Washer, an appliance designed for residential use to handle light-to-medium duty cleaning tasks. This includes cleaning boats, motorcycles, RVs, ATVs, trailers, decks, barbecues, siding, and patio furniture.

Function Description

The electric pressure washer operates by generating high-pressure water jets to remove dirt and grime from various surfaces. It is equipped with a pump encased in a shock-absorbing housing, a spray wand, and a non-slip handle grip for optimal working position and user comfort. The machine is designed to be used with cold or lukewarm water, with an operating temperature range between 32°F (0°C) and 104°F (40°C). Connecting it to a hot water supply is explicitly warned against, as it can significantly reduce the pump's life. The use of dirty, gritty, or chemically contaminated water is also discouraged as it can impair operation and shorten the machine's lifespan.

A key feature of this pressure washer is its Total Stop System (TSS), which incorporates a micro-switch sensitive to water flow. When the trigger on the spray gun is released, water stops flowing through the pump, and the TSS automatically turns the motor off. This mechanism prevents the pump from overheating, conserves energy, and prolongs the pump's life.

The pressure washer includes a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) for electrical safety, which should be provided on the circuits or outlets used for the appliance. Receptacles with built-in GFCI protection are suitable.

For enhanced cleaning power, the unit can be used with detergents. It comes with a detergent bottle attachment that is compatible with specific cleaning agents recommended by the manufacturer. Using other cleaning agents or chemicals may adversely affect the appliance's safety.

Usage Features

The pressure washer is designed for ease of use and safety. Operators must read the instruction manual thoroughly before use.

Assembly and Setup:

  • The unit requires minor assembly, including attaching wheels, sliding the transport handle into position, and securing it with screws.
  • The trigger gun holder and hose/cord holder also need to be slid into their designated positions.
  • The rear compartment, which stores accessories, is fitted by aligning tabs and securing it with screws.
  • The spray wand connects to the trigger gun by twisting until locked.
  • The high-pressure hose connects to both the trigger gun and the water outlet on the pressure washer, requiring secure tightening.
  • A garden hose adapter (female coupler) connects to the water inlet of the pressure washer, and a reinforced garden hose (male end) with an internal diameter of at least 13 mm (1/2 in.) is then threaded into the adapter. The water supply must be at least equal to the washer's delivery capacity.
  • Before plugging in, the motor switch must be in the OFF (0) position. The electrical supply voltage and frequency should match the rating plate. The GFCI may need to be reset upon initial plug-in.
  • The washer should be positioned as close as possible to the water supply and used on a secure, stable, upright surface.
  • Before starting the motor, the water supply tap must be turned on completely. The safety lock on the trigger gun should be unlocked, and the trigger pressed for a few seconds to allow air to escape and discharge residual pressure from the hose, ensuring a steady water flow.
  • The motor starts when the switch is turned to ON (I) and the trigger is pressed, and it shuts off when the trigger is released.

Nozzle System:

  • The pressure washer is equipped with three Quick-Connect nozzles (0°, 15°, 40°) that provide different spray patterns for various cleaning tasks: 40° for gentle cleaning, 15° for tough jobs, and 0° for spot cleaning or hard-to-reach areas.
  • Nozzles are connected by pulling back the brass Quick-Connect collar on the spray wand, inserting the desired nozzle, and releasing the collar until it clicks into place.
  • It is crucial NEVER to change nozzles without locking the safety lock on the trigger handle and turning off the pressure washer and water supply to release pressure.

Detergent Application:

  • For detergent application, the included detergent bottle is loaded with a suitable, non-corrosive detergent and attached to the gun by twisting to lock it in place.
  • Detergent should be applied from the bottom to the top of the dry surface for maximum effectiveness. Pre-wetting the surface is not recommended as it dilutes the detergent.
  • The detergent should be allowed to remain on the surface for a short period before rinsing, but it should not be allowed to dry on the surface.

Shutting Down and Taking a Break:

  • To shut down, turn the switch to OFF (0), unplug the power cord, turn off the water source, and hold the trigger to release water pressure.
  • Disconnect the garden hose and high-pressure hose, then engage the gun safety lock.
  • For breaks of five minutes or more, engage the gun safety lock, turn the switch to OFF (0), and unplug the power cord.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and safe operation of the pressure washer.

Electrical Safety:

  • Always inspect electrical cables for damage or wear before use. If damaged, do not use the pressure washer and contact customer service.
  • Keep all electrical connections dry and off the ground.
  • Avoid using extension cords if possible. If an extension cord is necessary, it must be intended for outdoor use, have an electrical rating not less than the product's rating, and be 14-gauge (or heavier) for lengths up to 25 ft (7.6 m). The combined cord length should not exceed 60 ft.
  • The power cord should always be completely unwound from drums to prevent overheating.
  • The appliance has a polarized plug, which must fit fully into a polarized outlet. If it doesn't, the plug should be reversed. If it still doesn't fit, a qualified electrician should install a proper wall outlet.

General Maintenance:

  • Before any maintenance, disconnect the plug from the power supply socket.
  • Regularly check and clean the water inlet filter to prevent foreign matter from clogging the pump. This involves removing the pre-filter and water inlet filter and rinsing them with warm water.
  • The nozzle should be cleaned with the provided needle clean-out tool. The spray wand should be removed from the gun, and any dirt from the nozzle hole rinsed away.

Storage and Winterizing:

  • The pressure washer must always be stored indoors in a dry, covered area where the temperature will not fall below 32°F (0°C) to prevent the pump from freezing. Freeze damage is not covered by the warranty.
  • Before storing, all water should be emptied from hoses, the pump, and the detergent bottle.
  • A pump protector is recommended for cold weather storage.
  • For long-term storage in freezing temperatures, disconnect all water connections, turn on the machine for a few seconds to exit remaining water from the pump, and then turn it off immediately.
  • The high-pressure hose should not be kinked.
  • Store the machine and accessories in a room that does not reach freezing temperatures and away from heat sources that could dry out pump seals.
  • Operating the pressure washer with non-corrosive/non-toxic anti-freeze, a pump saver, or a pump protector before winter storage is advised.
  • Before reusing after winterizing, the unit must be completely flushed with clear water to ensure no anti-freeze remains, as it can damage paintwork.

Safety Devices:

  • The unloader valve reduces pressure if it exceeds preset values.
  • The spray gun has a locking device to prevent accidental operation.
  • A thermal sensor protects the motor from overloading, restarting the machine after a few minutes once it has cooled.
  • The appliance features double insulation, providing two systems of insulation instead of grounding, and should only be serviced by qualified personnel using identical replacement parts.
