Overview

The Sony SRF-HM22 is an FM Stereo/AM PLL Synthesized Headphone Radio, designed for personal listening on the go. This compact and lightweight device combines the functionality of a radio with the convenience of headphones, making it ideal for various activities such as walking, cycling, or simply relaxing.

Function Description:

The core function of the SRF-HM22 is to provide access to both FM stereo and AM radio broadcasts. It utilizes a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) synthesized tuning system, which ensures stable and accurate reception of radio stations. The device is built into a headphone form factor, meaning the radio components are integrated directly into the earcups and headband, eliminating the need for separate headphones and a radio unit.

Usage Features:

  • Headband and Support Band: The SRF-HM22 features an adjustable headband to fit various head sizes. Additionally, a unique support band can be pulled out from the headband and adjusted for a secure and comfortable fit. When not in use, the support band can be pushed back into the headband for compact storage.
  • AVLS Selector (Automatic Volume Limiter System): This feature is designed to protect your hearing and provide a consistent listening experience. The AVLS selector offers two positions (1 or 2), which limit the maximum volume to moderate levels (around 95 dB and 85 dB respectively). This prevents sound degradation even if you attempt to turn the volume up higher. For users who prefer full volume capability, the AVLS can be turned off.
  • Volume Control: A dedicated VOL control allows users to adjust the listening volume to their preference.
  • FM Flexible Antenna: The device incorporates a flexible antenna specifically for FM reception, designed to optimize signal capture.
  • Light Reflector: For enhanced safety, especially during nighttime activities, the SRF-HM22 includes a light reflector that reflects car lights, making the user more visible.
  • Power Button: A single power button controls the on/off state of the radio.
  • FM SENS (Sensitivity) DX/LOCAL Selector: This selector allows users to optimize FM reception based on their environment.
    • DX (Distant) mode: This is the normal setting for stereo FM programs, and the radio will automatically switch to mono for non-stereo programs to maintain clarity.
    • LOCAL mode: This setting is recommended when a very strong station signal causes noise or if "multipath" occurs (reflection of signals from large structures like buildings or mountains). In LOCAL mode, reception becomes more stable, and noise is reduced.
  • Preset Buttons: The SRF-HM22 allows users to preset up to 5 stations in each band (FM and AM). This enables quick access to favorite stations without manual tuning.
  • ENTER/CLOCK Button: This multi-function button is used for storing preset stations and for setting the clock.
  • BAND Button: A dedicated button allows users to switch between FM and AM bands.
  • Display Window: The display window provides essential information, including the remaining battery power, current frequency, preset number, and the time.
  • TUNE (tuning)/TIME SET (+ and -) buttons: These buttons are used for manually tuning the radio frequency and for adjusting the time during clock setting.
  • AM Channel Step: The device's AM channel step can be changed between 10 kHz (for North American countries) and 9 kHz (for other countries). This adjustment is made by a specific sequence of button presses (turning off power, then pressing ENTER/CLOCK and POWER buttons for 5 seconds). Note that changing the AM channel step will cancel the clock and preset memory.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Compartment: The SRF-HM22 is powered by two AAA (R03) batteries, housed in an easily accessible compartment.
  • Battery Replacement Indication: The display window shows the remaining battery power with visual indicators (000 for new, 00 for used, 0 for exhausted). When batteries are weak, sound may become weak or stereo sound may become monaural. When completely exhausted, the power turns off, and "000" flashes.
  • Battery Replacement Procedure: When replacing batteries, it is recommended to do so within 30 seconds to prevent the cancellation of preset stations and the clock setting. If not replaced promptly, "AM 12:00" will flash, indicating the need to reset the clock and presets.
  • Battery Leakage Prevention: For long-term storage, it is advised to remove the batteries to prevent damage from leakage and corrosion.
  • Cleaning: The unit should be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution. Abrasive cleansers or chemical solvents should be avoided as they may mar the unit.
  • Environmental Precautions: Users are advised to avoid exposing the unit to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, moisture, sand, dust, or mechanical shock. It should not be left in a car parked in the sun.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting guide to help users identify and resolve common issues such as no sound, weak/distorted sound, problems with presetting, or no display. This guide provides potential causes and recommended solutions.
  • Road Safety and Hearing Protection: The manual emphasizes important safety guidelines, including not using headphones while driving, cycling, or operating motorized vehicles, and exercising caution in pedestrian areas. It also advises against using headphones at high volume continuously to prevent hearing damage and encourages keeping the volume at a moderate level to be aware of surroundings and considerate of others.
