Overview

The Sony Trinitron Color Video Monitor, available in models PVM-14N1A/14N1E/14N1U, PVM-14N2A/14N2E/14N2U, PVM-20N1A/20N1E/20N1U, and PVM-20N2A/20N2E/20N2U, is a high-resolution color video monitor designed for professional use. It features a fine pitch Trinitron picture tube, offering a horizontal resolution of more than 500 TV lines at the center of the picture, ensuring a sharp and clear image. The monitor incorporates a comb filter that activates when NTSC video signals are received, enhancing Y/C separation for reduced resolution decrease, cross color, and cross luminance phenomena. A built-in beam current feedback circuit ensures stable white balance, contributing to consistent color reproduction. The monitor is capable of displaying NTSC, PAL, SECAM, and NTSC4.43 signals, with automatic selection of the appropriate color system. The NTSC4.43 system refers to an NTSC color system where the subcarrier frequency is modified to 4.43MHz, typically output when playing back NTSC recorded video programs with a Trident (PAL/SECAM/NTSC4.43) VTR.

The monitor offers a variety of input options to accommodate different video sources. For models PVM-14N2A/14N2E/14N2U/20N2A/20N2E/20N2U, analog RGB input connectors are provided for connecting video equipment that outputs analog RGB signals. Y/C input connectors allow for the input of chrominance (C) and luminance (Y) signals separately, eliminating interference common in composite video signals and ensuring high video quality. These Y/C IN connectors (4-pin mini-DIN) have priority over VIDEO IN connectors; when a cable is connected to the Y/C IN connector, it is automatically selected, and the VIDEO IN connector is disconnected. The Y/C OUT connector (4-pin mini-DIN) provides a loop-through output of the Y/C IN signal. The VIDEO IN connectors (BNC-type) are for composite video signals, with a loop-through VIDEO OUT connector (BNC-type). Both Y/C and VIDEO IN connectors feature automatic 75-ohm termination, which is released when a cable is connected to their respective loop-through output connectors. Audio input (phono jack) and loop-through audio output (phono jack) connectors are also available for both LINE A and LINE B inputs. For RGB inputs, R/G/B (input) connectors (BNC-type) are provided for analog RGB signals, external sync signals, and audio signals. The monitor can operate on an external sync signal or on the sync signal from the G channel, configurable via the RGB SYNC menu. An EXT SYNC connector (BNC-type) is available for external sync input. A REMOTE connector (phono jack) is included on some models, allowing for remote input signal selection (open for current input, ground for previous input). Power is supplied via a ~AC IN (inlet) connector.

Usage features are primarily managed through on-screen menus, which allow users to set various monitor operation settings and adjustments. The menu system is divided into item selection menus and adjustment/setting menus. Users can navigate through menus using the MENU/EXIT, up/down arrow, and ENTER buttons on the front panel. Settings such as volume, contrast, brightness, color intensity, phase, color system, display period, language, user memory, RGB sync, and aspect ratio can be adjusted. The "USER MEMORY" menu allows users to store and recall custom settings, as well as reset to factory presets. The "COLOR SELECT" menu offers options like AUTO, NTSC COMB, NTSC, NTSC 4.43, PAL, and SECAM for input color system selection. "DISPLAY" settings control how long the input color system is shown on screen (SHORT TIME, LONG TIME, OFF). The "LANGUAGE" menu supports English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish. "RGB SYNC" allows selection between external sync or sync on green for RGB signals. "ASPECT RATIO" can be set to 4:3 or 16:9. The monitor supports EIA standard 19-inch rack mounting with optional brackets (MB-502B for 14-inch, SLR-103A for 20-inch).

Maintenance features include:

  • Cleaning: The unit should be periodically cleaned with a mild detergent solution. Strong solvents or abrasive cleansers should be avoided. The unit should be unplugged before cleaning.
  • Repacking: The original carton and packing materials should be retained for safe transportation of the unit.
  • Troubleshooting: A dedicated section in the manual helps users diagnose common issues such as noise on screen, intermittent horizontal lines, or inaccurate color reproduction, providing possible causes and remedies. For persistent problems, users are advised to contact an authorized Sony dealer.
  • Safety: Important safety precautions include operating the unit only with the specified power source, avoiding exposure to rain or moisture, not opening the cabinet due to high voltage, ensuring adequate air circulation, and avoiding placement near heat sources or in direct sunlight.
