Overview

The SPRT SP-POS58V is a compact thermal printer designed for various receipt printing applications, particularly suitable for commercial cash registers, PC-POS systems, and bank POS terminals. It operates as a line thermal printer, meaning it prints by applying heat directly to thermal paper, eliminating the need for ribbons or ink cartridges. This design choice contributes to its low maintenance requirements and quiet operation.

Function Description

The primary function of the SP-POS58V is to print receipts and other transactional documents quickly and efficiently. It supports a wide range of character sets, including all Chinese characters (GB18030 and BIG5), ASCII characters, and custom characters. Additionally, it can print one-dimensional barcodes and various density point figures, and it supports bitmap downloads, offering flexibility for logos or custom graphics on receipts. The printer is controlled via ESC instruction sets, ensuring compatibility with common POS software.

Usage Features

The SP-POS58V is designed for ease of use, starting with its simple paper loading mechanism. To install paper, users press the cover-open button, place a thermal paper roll into the designated machine positions, pull out some paper, and then close the paper cover by gently pressing down from both sides. The printer uses 58 mm wide thermal paper rolls with a maximum diameter of 60 mm. Paper cutting is performed manually.

The device offers multiple interface options to connect with host systems:

  • RS232 Serial Interface: This interface uses a DB-9 female socket and supports XON/XOFF and DTR/DSR protocols. It offers various baud rates from 2400 to 115200 bps and supports data structures with one start bit, seven or eight data bits, and one stop bit. Verification options include validation or odd/even parity.
  • USB Interface: A standard USB B female socket provides a straightforward connection to computers.
  • Bluetooth Interface: The printer supports Bluetooth 2.0, enabling wireless connectivity with compatible devices.

Different models of the SP-POS58V are available to cater to specific connectivity needs:

  • SP-POS58VS: RS-232C serial interface
  • SP-POS58VU: USB interface
  • SP-POS58VSU: 232C serial + USB interfaces
  • SP-POS58VUBT: USB + Bluetooth 2.0 interfaces

The printer's power supply requires a DC 7.5V ±10% input at 2A, using a desktop power socket with a phi 2.0 connector, where the polarity is negative. Users are advised to use the standard power adapter provided.

For diagnostic purposes, the printer includes a self-test function. By holding down the "FEED" button while turning on the power, the printer will print a self-test receipt detailing its model, firmware version, interface type, default codepage, printing parameters, and ANK characters. This helps verify the printer's internal functionality independently of the host system.

Another useful feature is the hexadecimal print mode. This mode is activated by pressing the "SET" and "FEED" keys simultaneously while turning on the printer. In this mode, all input data is printed as hexadecimal numbers, which can be useful for debugging communication issues. The mode can be exited by pressing the "FEED" button three times.

The printer also features two indicator lights: a green "POWER" indicator and a red "ERROR" lamp. The green light indicates power supply status, shining continuously when power is normal. The red "ERROR" lamp signals abnormal states or alarms. Its flashing patterns indicate different types of errors:

  • Continuous flashing indicates recoverable errors like print head overheating or paper lack. The printer automatically recovers once the condition (e.g., temperature returns to normal, paper is loaded) is resolved.
  • Multiple flashes followed by continuous illumination indicate unrecoverable errors, with the number of flashes corresponding to the error type (e.g., one flash for memory read/write errors, two for over voltage, three for under voltage, four for CPU execution errors, five for temperature detection circuit errors).

Printer parameters can be configured through a dedicated software setting tool. Once set, these parameters are saved to the printer and take effect upon the next power-on.

Maintenance Features

The SP-POS58V is designed for low maintenance, primarily due to its direct thermal printing method, which eliminates the need for consumables like ink cartridges or ribbons. This avoids the regular maintenance associated with such components.

Key maintenance considerations highlighted in the manual include:

  • Print Head Protection: Users are cautioned not to press the "FEED" button when there is no paper in the print head, as this can negatively impact the print head's lifespan.
  • Paper Handling: To prevent damage, users should avoid pulling paper forwards or backwards manually. If paper needs to be adjusted, any extra paper should be cut, and the "FEED" button used to advance the paper.
  • Print Quality: Maintaining a clean print head is crucial for optimal printing quality.
  • Paper Roll Orientation: It is important to ensure the print surface of the paper roll faces the print head correctly during installation.
  • Paper Core: The end of the paper roll should not stick to the paper core.
  • Closing the Paper Cover: The manual emphasizes the correct procedure for closing the paper cover: first, ensure the cover contacts the "nose" (likely a guide or sensor), then press firmly on both sides until it is tight against the head card, ensuring a normal close. Excessive force should be avoided.

The printer's robust design and simple operation contribute to its overall reliability and ease of upkeep in various commercial environments.
