Overview

The Hausted® MBC® (Mammography/Biopsy Chair) is a versatile medical device designed for patient treatment, transport, and recovery, specifically in mammography and biopsy procedures. This operator and service manual (document number 066984, dated 11/20/06) provides comprehensive instructions for its safe and proper use and maintenance.

Function Description:

The MBC® chair's primary function is to provide convenient and safe patient positioning for mammography and biopsy procedures, as well as for general patient transport and recovery. Its design allows for seamless transition between a chair position and a fully reclined stretcher position, offering unmatched versatility in patient care. The chair is not intended to replace a standard stretcher or gurney.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Weight Capacity: The MBC® has a maximum weight capacity of 325 lbs.
  • Height Adjustment: Features hydraulic height adjustment, allowing for smooth elevation and lowering of the unit. Pedals for height adjustment are located on both sides of the unit.
  • Backrest Adjustment: Equipped with pneumatic backrest adjustment.
  • Trendelenburg Adjustment: Includes a 10° Trendelenburg position. To achieve this, the unit must first be in the chair position, and the TRENDELENBURG handle (B) should be grasped and released once the desired position is reached.
  • Braking System: Features a four-wheel central braking system with a steering lock.
    • Applying Brakes: Depress the RED pedal (approximately 45° at any corner) to lock all four caster wheels from rotating and swiveling.
    • Releasing Brakes: Depress the GREEN pedal to a horizontal position to allow all four caster wheels to roll and swivel freely.
  • Steering Lock:
    • Applying Steer Lock: From the head end, depress the GREEN pedal downward (approximately 45°) and push the unit forward. This locks one caster wheel at the opposite end into a non-swiveling position for straight tracking and easier swiveling by the attendant.
    • Releasing Steer Lock: Depress the RED pedal to a horizontal position to allow all four caster wheels to swivel and roll freely.
  • Overall Dimensions of Patient Surface:
    • Chair Position: Width 22", Length 50"
    • Stretcher Position: Width 22", Length 70.5"

Usage Features:

  • Patient Positioning: The MBC® allows for adjustment anywhere from a chair position to a fully reclined stretcher position by grasping the RECLINE handle (A).
  • Patient Entry and Egress: Patient entry, egress, and transfer should always be from the center side rail locations by lowering the side rail. Patients should not enter or exit from the ends of the MBC, except when it is in a full chair position.
  • Restraint Straps: Patients should be secured with restraint straps when left unattended in a fully reclined position.
  • C.P.R./Surgical Support Leg (Accessory Number APC025):
    • Installation: Involves mounting the leg assembly to the A.P.C. on the left and right sides of the chair, securing with hex head cap screws and Loctite®. Velcro is then applied to the tubes.
    • Operation (C.P.R. Use): Pull Velcro away, adjust MBC to horizontal, legs hinge and lock. Pull knob out, slide rack to floor, release knob to engage lock. Push down on head end to ensure stability.
    • Storage: Pull knob, slide rack fully in, release knob. Push slide collar up, fold legs inward, wrap Velcro around legs.
    • Safety Warning: The C.P.R./Surgical Support Legs should only be used when the unit is in the horizontal position to prevent tipping.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Laceration Hazard: Always use a tool specifically designed for cutting bands to avoid injuries from tension release.
    • Personal Injury Hazard (Tipping): Do not sit on the ends of the unit (head or foot) when in the stretcher position. Do not stand on the footrest or use it as a step stool. Tipping may occur.
    • Pedal Usage: Do not stand on the height adjustment pedals.
  • Uncrating Instructions: Includes steps for cutting bands, removing carton halves, checking unit features, cleaning with mild detergent, and placing into service. Any shipping damage should be reported immediately.

Maintenance Features:

  • Preventive Maintenance Program: A thorough program is essential for safe and proper unit operation.
  • Lubrication: All moving and sliding parts and hinge points should be lubricated every 6 months using lubricating oil, light-duty grease, wax stick lubricant, or Never-Seez lubricant.
  • Fastener Inspection: All fasteners (nuts, bolts, etc.) should be inspected every 3 months to ensure proper fit, position, and tightness. Tools required include a ratchet with appropriate socket wrench and screwdriver.
  • Cleaning:
    • Mattresses and Pads: Clean periodically with medium strength cleaners, soap, and water. Pressure cleaning or steam cleaning is NOT recommended and can void the warranty.
    • External Surfaces: Clean periodically to remove blood, dirt, lint, and other deposits using any medium strength anti-bacterial cleaners.
  • Surface Inspection: Inspect all surfaces periodically for sharp or burred areas and apply touch-up paint where required (specify color when ordering).
  • Warranty: Any alteration of the equipment not authorized or performed by STERIS Engineering Service will void the warranty. Pressure washing and steam cleaning are not recommended procedures and can void warranty.
  • Service and Support: STERIS offers comprehensive Annual Maintenance Agreements and maintains a global staff of factory-trained technicians for service and repairs. Customer service can be reached at 1-800-333-8828.
  • Replacement Parts: The manual includes detailed diagrams and part lists for MBC Final Assembly, MBC Top Assembly, MBC Back Section Assembly, and MBC Base Assembly, along with their respective part numbers and descriptions. Optional accessories are also listed.
