2.9 Shutdown
The blowdown valve is normally closed. At shutdown the
back pressure in the compressor inlet signals the blow-
down valve to vent the sump pressure into the atmo-
sphere.
2.10 Air inlet system, functional
description
Refer to Figure 2-7. The air inlet system consists of two
air filters, a compressor air inlet valve and interconnect-
ing piping to the engine and the compressor.
The air filters are three-stage dry element type filters that
are
capable of cleaning extremely dirty air. However,
when operating in dirty environments, the filters should
be checked more frequently.
See Section 5.9.3: Air filter maintenance on pa
ge 52.
2.11 Instrument panel group,
functional description
Refer to Figure 2-8. The instrument panel group consists
of: master gauge, ignition/start switch, inhibit/ force regen
switch, compressor s
hutdown light, compressor warning
light, idle warm-up control, engine shutdown light, engine
warning light, wait to start lamp, low fuel level lamp, and
all required Tier 4 Final exhaust filter lamps. A high-low
pressure selector valve is located on the panel for “H”
and “HH” compressors.
Refer to Figure 2-8 for the locations of the following indi-
cators and controls:
The air pressure gauge continuously monitors the
sum
p pressure u
nder various load conditions.
The engine start switch energizes the system
and starts the compressor. The engine switch
is pressed to the ON position to energize the
electrical system, and pressed momentarily to
the START position to engage the starter and
start the compressor.
The idle warm-up control is turned from START
to RUN after sufficient warm-up is achieved for
full compressor operation.
The pressure selector valve on “H” compres-
sors allows the selection of the compressor
operating pressure range, 80 to 110 psig (5.6 to
7.6 bar) or 80 to 165 psig (5.6 to 11.4 bar) for
“H” models, or 80 to 220 psig (5.6 to 15.2 bar)
for “HH” models.
The shutdown indicator light indicates engine
and compressor safety shutdown status.
The engine warning lamp indicates when an
abnormal condition exists. It is not necessary to
shutdown the engine immediately, but the prob-
lem should be corrected as soon as possible.
The engine wait to start lamp is illuminated
when conditions are not right for starting.
The engine stop lamp signals when the engine
should be stopped immediately or as soon as
possible to prevent engine damage. Correct
the problem before restarting.
The fuel level warning lamp is illuminated when
the fluid level is near the shutdown level. Fuel
tank level can also be displayed on the Single
Axle Controller display.
The Single Axle Controller is a multifunction
tool that allows operators to view a wide range
of engine and compressor parameters and
engine service codes.
